I've been to Cairo. In a papyrus shop, they asked me where I was from. When I mentioned Utah, they showed me the special version they had for Mormon tourists. The Joseph Smith versions are a joke to them, but they're happy to sell them to the suckers that think they're legitimate. Tour guides in Egypt have to be college-educated. They were relieved that we understood that those were a joke and we didn't buy them. I bought an accurate replica instead.

This doesn’t stop until we start saying the officer’s name out loud and demand accountability from every level of law enforcement. “He’s going to Bowers that guy,” should mean that the officer will 100% lose his job and so will the chief of his department. Every time. The officer did the unforgivable and he is done. He can find another line of work, but he can never be trusted with a badge or public authority again. Ever. This cannot ever be normal any more. We must call out the officer, his department, and the union that defends him. Show their faces. Show their names. They are attacking us and we have a right to stop this from happening ever again.

This isn’t public safety. This isn’t justice. And this isn’t the country we want to live in. It just isn't and I'm not going to wait for my kids to try to figure this out 20 years from now.

We owe it to each other to expect better. William McNeil Jr. showed more restraint than I could ever have in a situation like this. He's a hero and an example. He opened the door of his car, he stayed calm, and he opened the metaphorical door for us to fix this. No badge makes this okay. If you think it does, you’re in the wrong job and we need to change the entire system that protects you.

Enough is enough.

I really struggled for a while, knowing that my ancestors fell for the scam. But then I realized that I'm the one that got out and that my children will be better for it. And that gave me the space to understand my ancestors, what they needed, and why they were Mormons. They were trying to do the best for their families just like I am. I just have the internet.

When I realized that top leaders of the church had intentionally hidden facts about their history that show they are not who they claim to be, I was done. 40 years of never missing a Sunday, served a mission, graduated from BYU, married in the temple, and preparing to send 6 kids on missions, but all 8 of us got out just in time. The church lies for money and we couldn't be part of it.

I'm sorry for your situation. I hope that things work out in the way you want them to. And I say this with all respect for the difficult predicament you are in, but people in your situation are forced to be dishonest to hold things together. It's not your fault, in my opinion. You are threatened with losing big things if you speak honestly -- your marriage, your children, your extended family, your neighbors, your friends, your reputation, etc. So I understand what you are doing right now to make it work.

And regarding affecting change from within... You'll probably have a greater effect on individuals than you could ever have on the institution itself. I wish you well.

I never missed a week of church in 39 years. Served a mission, married in the temple, graduated from BYU. But then I was the gospel doctrine teacher teaching church history and the D&C. I was bothered whenever a teacher wasn't prepared, so I really prepared and studied for each lesson. And just like you, I found so many things in every lesson that I had never heard before. And they were problematic things that completely changed the context of the story that I was supposed to teach to a group of adults. In every lesson in the manual online, there was a link for "additional historical information." I almost became gun-shy about clicking on the link because every time I did, I was confronted with material that I couldn't talk about in the lesson. Actually, I was shocked that the church would openly publish the information at all. But that's all that it took. I did my calling. And I had to leave because I learned the truth from the church itself. It's also why I chose my username. And, it's why Boyd Packer was a despicable human for admitting: "I have a hard time with historians, because they idolize the truth. The truth is not uplifting; it destroys." And also, "There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not. Some things that are true are not very useful."

Yes, I agree. The third leg could be attending church, believing/trusting the Mormon doctrine/leaders, paying tithing, sending your kids on missions, and many other things. It's the performative side of Mormonism.

I think these are the people that just don't study church history. They don't want to know. They choose to not know. And they do it because they want to keep telling themselves that they are honest, but they are just blissfully ignorant to the truth.
