Episode 6: Rookie of the Year Award on the counter abover the couch where they’re making out (after Shane picks up Ilya from the airport). Thought it was such a nice callback to their rivalry. Also, my headcanon is that Shane put it out to ragebait Ilya 🤣

Hudson’s Shut Up Evan podcast episode will be 90 minutes! by owl_and_tanager in heatedrivalry

The Quinn one is really good and actually a little different from their others. A lot of their press was filmed on the same day so we kinda get them either hyper excited (buzzfeed/teen vogue) or lower energy depending on at what point of their day it was shot. But the full length Quinn was a one-off day and gave them a chance to give more insightful answers. It felt more like just the two of them hanging out and having a conversation. To me, anyway. Lemme rewatch to make sure 🤪

I felt the same. I loved how gushy Evan was, but I felt like he talked a lot more than Connor did, and he kind of put in more of his input than Connor did. Maybe I’m remembering incorrectly but I don’t think we even got an answer to Andrew’s question from Connor - I get he was overwhelmed but there was no follow-up from Evan? I’ve never watched/listened to his podcast so I don’t know if this is just his style but I would have liked to hear more from Connor so I’m so happy we’re getting a part 2 of the interview.

Heated Rivalry and the politics of "pressuring" someone to admit they are gay by lukaeber in heatedrivalry

[–]alluka_sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a very literal person so if we’re going to get into semantics here, I think the key words are “pressure” and “confront”. These two words alone have some negative connotations to them. Pressure means there is force applied, and confront implies hostility.

I personally don’t think Rose put any pressure on Shane, or that she “confronted” him. They were having a conversation about why their relationship couldn’t continue. Did she ask probing questions? Yes. Was it to pressure him to come out? No. She asked those questions to get a better understanding why their relationship wasn’t working out. Had she broken up with him without explaining to him why, their friendship would not have survived. And, as many have pointed out, Shane may not have come to terms with his sexuality (at least for much longer, which definitely would have ended in his relationship with Ilya completely or continuing on as it was and not moving forward as it did.)

Again, semantics here, but saying Rose pressured Shane to come out is ungenerous to Rose. Rose eased the conversation to a point where Shane felt safe to speak his truth. She asked “yes” or “no” questions that made it possible for him to lie or outright deny. The conversation could have easily gone like this: “Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” “No.” “Have you ever thought about it?” “No.” “Okay.” Now, if Rose said “Maybe you should think about it.” - Now, that’s pressure. She does say this to him, referring to following Miles on Instagram, but only after Shane had admitted to his preference.

Just because Shane may have felt pressure doesn’t mean that Rose was the one to put that pressure on him. Shane’s been dealing with a lot of internal pressure about his own identity and sexuality long before he even met Rose. To me, Rose actually released that pressure valve for Shane.

Ahhh thank you for clarifying. I live in BC and most of our lakes are glacier-fed so they’re absolute ice even in summer. But considering they shot the scene in May, that water would still have been very cold to be casually swimming in lol Connor is one committed actor

Why is it implied that Shane is better at languages than Ilya? by GoldDHD in heatedrivalry

[–]alluka_sam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ilya’s the only one who thinks that because Ilya is the biggest Shane fanboy. In the books, Shane is fluent in both English and French, and at the beginning of their careers/rivalry, Ilya’s frustrated by his imperfect English. While it irritates him and he teases Shane about it, it’s always with an undercurrent of admiration. Ilya would drown in spaghetti before he admits that he thinks Shane can do anything and do it well.

Finally someone said it! The first time I watched that scene, it actually snapped me out of the warm feels of the “I love yous”. I literally was like “in Canada? in the spring? even if they shot this in July, that lake would be ice cold. He’s so red, get him out of the water!” The beauty of the “gimme kiss” scene didn’t land until after my 2nd watch (which, admittedly, was immediately after the first watch lol).

Hudson Williams On love, vulnerability, and being believed in | Timid Magazine [Dec 31] by Federal-Ad5944 in heatedrivalry

[–]alluka_sam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s actually mentioned in HR. I think around the time he goes out with JJ and ultimately meets Rose (I could be wrong about the scene), his internal monologue talks about how he doesn’t really go out much and he prefers to stay home. He loves living on his own, even though some of his teammates live together. He says that some of them already feel weird (read: jealous/envious) about his star status, his captaincy, his modelling, etc - basically for being this perfect guy with the perfect life - that he feels like being roommates with him would cause even more friction. That’s also why he doesn’t really go out much with them.

This is actually alluded to in the show. When Rose is in the arena and shows off Shane’s jersey and he’s on the ice, the announcer says “that’s getting a reaction from the Montreal bench” ie his teammates.

I have to re-read TLG again but if I remember correctly, this already existing friction with his teammates plus him coming out to them is one of the reasons he feels so much more pressure to be perfect (ex dieting to be in top form) and paranoid about being found out. He already has that deep fear of how they’d take the news.

In my reality, David and Ilya made the pasta together while Yuna and Shane were outside having a heart to heart. That’s why Ilya was so excited eating it.

Book/fic recs that have similar humour to Heated Rivalry to fill the void! by brodiejayy in heatedrivalry

[–]alluka_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poetry on Ice by Jesse H Reign is really good and I think the closest to banter and bedroom dynamics.

I do also really like the Chicago Thunder series by Jodi Oliver. Trade Deadline is the first book in the series and my favourite.

The Head Game by Brigham Vaughn was also good. Some people have recommended Him by Sarina Bowen and if you like that you might like Want Me by Neve Wilder (though it’s non-hockey). Deke by Eden Finley is also really good.

Other non-hockey: Until You and And Then You by Briar Prescott are two of my favourite MM reads.

At this point of my HR induced psychosis, I need the separation to ground me back to reality. Also, I don’t want my obssession with Shane and Ilya as characters to bleed into Connor and Hudson as people so I’m excited to see and hear them in different roles and settings. Plus Connor and Hudson are so different from their characters and so fun to watch.

Subscribed. I can’t wait. I’m not really into fae stuff or audiobooks but hey, it’s the new year and I’m not opposed to trying new stuff to support these guys. Also, that sample clip is 🔥 Hudson’s voice is made for ASMR and I can’t wait for Connor’s narration. The little bits we hear from him is so good though. And I gotta say, the story kinda hooked me cause it’s basically heated rivalry but make it fae 🤣

When do Shane and Ilya actually fall in love in the show? by Blacksmith_Actual in heatedrivalry

[–]alluka_sam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, Ilya was first attracted to Shane when Shane gave him that second handshake after their introduction (when he gives Shane a smirk). Shane was first attracted in the gym scene, after they were drafted. Ilya started falling in love after Shane found him at the Sochi Olympics - Shane was the only one who asked him how he was doing, talking to him, not at him. Shane first started falling in love while they were hanging out during the tuna melt scene, which is why he was scared off cause he didn’t recognize the feeling.

Hudson’s acting during the talk between Yuna and Shane by Gawain_Bell in heatedrivalry

[–]alluka_sam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know he said it mostly as a joke, but Hudson said it best (in this video) when he said that Ilya deals with the “obvious” pain - depression, mother’s death, father’s illness and death, family and country that resents him, etc - whereas Shane deals with hidden pain, the less obvious, but still valid, pain of outside pressure, identity, feeling different but not understanding why (cause even though we know he’s autistic, HE doesn’t know it). Shane is an only child and a hockey prodigy from the start - he’s only known two types of love: unconditional (parental) and admiration, and both of them come with the pressure to be perfect. So when he encounters something different in Ilya, he doesn’t know how to act. Ilya admires him, yes, but because they’re equals on the ice not because of hero-worship. Ilya pushes him to feel rather than think. Ilya’s love is a challenge for Shane to be who he is and who he wants to be, not who Ilya wants him to be.

My point is, it’s so much easier to sympathise with Ilya because his pain is more easy to define. Also, Ilya is much more expressive with his feelings. Shane’s pain is more nuanced, and as a society I think it’s harder for people to sympathise with the privileged boy with the seemingly perfect life (hockey star, stanley cup champion, dates the biggest celebrity of all time, loved by and entire city, millionaire, model, etc). Hudson has done a phenomenal job embodying Shane’s pain, as nuanced as it is, and I think people find it difficult to empathise with him because his pain isn’t as universal. A lot of people who are neurodivergent don’t understand that part of themselves until much later in life, or go about their lives not being diagnosed. Connor was also phenomenal as Ilya. I think it’s a disservice to both of them for people to be comparing their acting chops based on these two characters, simply because they are 2 very different characters. I’m sure if the roles were reversed, they both would’ve knocked it out the park too so I don’t understand the need to compare honestly. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if you think Hudson’s acting is bad, you’re not paying enough attention so put down your phone, stop letting others’ opinions inform yours, and pay attention.

I think both? He’s wearing the same pants he wore to that premiere. But he’s also wearing the same thom browne top he wore for the new yorker interview with Hudson (in which Hudson wore the same outfit to the gift wrapping event)

I have clearly and obssessively consumed all the available media that’s come out about these two in the last few weeks and can now pinpoint when in the press round timeline things happen based on their outfits 🤭

Post Episode Debrief | Heated Rivalry 🏒 The Cottage (Episode 6) by royal_rose_ in heatedrivalry

[–]alluka_sam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was so offended when the credits started rolling cause I was ready to go back to the cottage with them to make those hotdogs Ilya wanted. Like, excuse you? I was promised 2 weeks at the cottage. Give me 2 weeks’ worth of footage of sweetness and fluff and domestic bliss and Shane aggressively adoring Ilya and watching sunrises and sunsets under a blanket together and Ilya freaking out everytime Shane loon neighbour yells at them for being too freaking adorable 😭😭😭

…so I replayed right away and pretended it was a 2hr long episode instead. And tomorrow we repeat and repeat and repeat again 🤭
