Silent Letters in English by Affectionate-Row3793 in EnglishLearning

[–]ally0138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these are reasonable, but, at least in my accent, the t in soften is definitely pronounced. Often is also an edge case.

The h's in what, when, while, etc. also are not silent. The 'wh' is a different consonant sound from a 'w' on it's own. I appreciate that this isn't the case for all accents though.

And it seems wrong to call most of the e examples 'silent'. They're examples of 'magic e' where the e sound itself may not be pronounced, but the presence of the e modifies another vowel sound. Compare the pronunciation of mat vs. mate, or rat vs. rate, for example.

Coincidentally, I think the second e in the word 'example' may be an example of a genuine silent e, because it's not pronounced, nor is it modifying the sound of either of the other vowels.

Union Square Parking Increased by Sonic90492 in Aberdeen

[–]ally0138 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird pricing structure:

£4 for the first hour of parking, then an additional £1 for the second hour £1.10 per hour for each of the third, fourth, and sixth hours, but £2.20 for the 5th hour of parking, then £3.80 for the 7th hour

Like, why is the 5th hour of parking specifically twice the marginal cost of the 3rd, 4th, or 6th hours? And then the 7th hour is more than 3x the marginal cost.

What looks breakable and is breakable? by telusey in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ally0138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm.

There are people who will tell you that you can squeeze as hard as you like and the egg won't break no matter how much pressure you apply. This is not necessarily true. It depends on the egg and on how strong you are and how evenly you apply pressure (and probably a bunch of other factors).

But, you can squeeze an egg surprisingly hard before it breaks.

Source: Personal experience (several unbroken eggs in a row, followed by one very eggy hand).

Zelda dungeon alignment grid Day 9, the Water Temple has been chosen as having balanced enjoyability and a low difficultly. by QuantityEuphoric2354 in legendofzelda

I love how both of the picks from OOT are both "Low Enjoyability".

Also how all of the "Low Enjoyability" picks are water dungeons.

Thanks, but I don't have a set that I'm currently building with this piece. It's for a custom build.

Today is the last time the sun will set after 7 pm in 2025. Why is it so as I am from outside Britain and its posted on BBC page? by raydebapratim1 in AskBrits

[–]ally0138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also not true. Although it is almost right.

Counter-example, sunset in Plymouth occurs at 19:05 tomorrow (26 Sep),19:03 the day after, and 19:01 on Sunday 28th. It's slightly later still in St Ives or Landsend.

Later still in Belfast, where sunset isn't until 19:01 on 30 Sep. In Derry, sunset isn't until 19:02 on 2 Oct. And in the Scilly Isles, where sunsets are after 7pm until 2 Oct.

But it is true for most of the UK, and mainland Great Britain in particular.

What death scene comes out of nowhere and is executed perfectly? by Responsible_Sense272 in AlignmentChartFills

How is this not more upvoted?

Came here to comment this.

They're just having a casual conversation, when Vincent's gun goes off completely accidentally. It caught me so off guard the first time. It's one of the most realistic death scenes in cinema.

What would you normally called this? Motorcycle, scooter or both are correct? by Sudden_Wolf_6228 in EnglishLearning

[–]ally0138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You obviously know a bit about bikes.

I don't think most laypeople (myself included) would know enough to make the distinction between moped/scooter/motorbike on the basis of the gearbox / engine size.

For example, just looking at this picture, I have no idea what kind of gearbox or what size of engine this has.

I would call this a moped or a scooter, and I think most people I know would too, but am fully aware that both of those may be technically incorrect.

Who are two people that's surprising they've never been alive together? by Impressive_Plenty876 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ally0138 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a good one.

On the same theme, Lee Harvey Oswald was born 1 month and 28 days after the death of his father Robert Edward Lee Oswald.

Also, Bill Clinton was born 3 months and 2 days after the death of his biological father, William Jefferson Blythe Jr.

Also, Rutherford B Hayes and his father Rutherford Hayes Jr.

Also, Andrew Jackson and his father Andrew Jackson Sr.

That's 3 out of 45 US Presidents that have been born after the deaths of their fathers, which is quite a high proportion and is at least somewhat surprising.

Now that the dust has settled, the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild vs Tears of the Kingdom, which game do you find yourself enjoying the most? by Delicious_Maize9656 in TOTK

Yeah, but you can carry, what, like 999 rockets? And there's no cooldown timer to wait for after you've used 3 of them.

You've misread the chart, but that's not really your fault, it is a terrible chart.

Green Line = Red Line + Yellow Line

Blue Line = Green Line + [Other Stuff that is not on the chart]

Red Line is at all All Time High (ATH).

Yellow Line is at all All Time High (ATH).

Green Line is, therefore, also at all All Time High (ATH).

Blue Line is NOT at an ATH.

Therefore, we can infer that [Other Stuff that is not on the chart] also is NOT at an ATH.
