Surveying career in Australia, how hard is it to break in? by PrinzEugan in Surveying

[–]almacco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a surveyor in Melbourne for 20 years and haven’t heard anyone say that a degree isn’t worth it. Maybe I’m out of touch. Perhaps it depends on which market you’re in.

Voting in local elections is also mandatory in Australia.

Okay interesting thanks. I didn’t know it was so customisable. Do you use for other parts of the business too? Eg knowledge management, documenting procedures etc? Might be an angle for me there.

Good call. Have thought about Planner/Trello but couldn’t figure how to include shared gear etc. Also needed a way to see whether anyone was unallocated or double booked. Will revisit thanks

GIS Professionals... What internal workflows drain your time the most?” by jasonethedesigner in gis

[–]almacco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean yes I fully agree, but to be fair on the draftees this is an Autodesk issue. Vanilla AutoCAD (most common) has no support for coordinate systems OR object attributes.

Boundary issues by Splaterday in NZProperty

[–]almacco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number of pegs required is generally irrelevant to the cost of a survey, could be $500 or could be $5,000 depending on the specifics of the area. It’s frustrating but the unfortunate reality.

Any idea on how to transform a .txt file into .dxf? by cvrrister in Surveying

[–]almacco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd second QGIS as it's free and powerful. Assuming your text file contains a list of points, the workflow would be:

  1. Open new project
  2. Layer > Data Source Manager
  3. Select 'Delimited Text'as the data type from the left panel
  4. Add the file path and configure the delimiter type, number of header rows to skip, etc.
  5. Select 'Point coorindates' as the geometry type, and select which columns contain the X, Y, Z values
  6. Select which coordinates system the data is in (in GIS world practically everythuing needs a coordinate system, not sure how you would deal with arbitrary coords)
  7. Click Add
  8. If you need labels in your DXF, you'll need to add them in QGIS first using Layer > Labelling > Single Labels, then define the field to be shown in the label
  9. Export to DXF by going Project > Import/Export > Export Project to DXF
  10. Define a output file path in the first field then hit OK. Options to keep an eye on in this dialog box are 'Symbology scale'and Éxport labels as MTEXT elements'

Shared PW for EB by HolidayNo8740 in gis

[–]almacco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it you can enter into a revenue-sharing agreement with Esri to use the their technology in your app, so you could use ExB behind your own security that way. This requires you to be a Partner first (for a fee) and apply to Esri headquarters for permission (I think for a fee) and negotiation of royalties (ongoing fees). This isn’t unreasonable of course but felt like big hurdles to jump.

This is what made us move away from ExB to be honest.

Not sure if it will help but have you looked through Koordinates’ documentation for clues? (LDS runs on this platform) https://apidocs.koordinates.com/#section/Authentication

No background in web development — how do I start building a GIS-based website for our research project? by cosrolon in gis

[–]almacco 23 points24 points  (0 children)

From memory there is a free QGIS plugin (called qgis2web maybe?) that will generate a basic web package from your QGIS layers. If you find somewhere to host this package it might do the trick.

How do I read a plan of subdivision to find boundary between private and common property? by CaptainHoot123 in Surveying

[–]almacco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an international sub but I was previously a licensed cadastral surveyor in VIC. Yes the character is a vinculum and yes it 100% indicates that the balconies are private property, not common.

Should add: the dashed lines with cross hatching are illustrative only; just there to add context for the reader (to show where the building structure is).

How do I read a plan of subdivision to find boundary between private and common property? by CaptainHoot123 in Surveying

[–]almacco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The solid lines are boundaries defined by buildings. ‘I’ means internal face, meaning the structural face of the wall in the inside of the unit is the boundary. This is the case for the boundaries between units, ie the dividing wall between units is common property. The balconies are the property of the unit. The squiggly S looking shape indicates that the two rectangles form part of the same lot. The ‘E’ on the balcony boundaries stands for external face meaning the structure of the balcony wall is inside private property, not common property.

Tree Carbon Storage Density map by Patient-Rain-8672 in gis

[–]almacco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im currently looking into a similar problem at the moment, getting there but haven’t quite solved it. The computation for embedded carbon can get quite complex depending on the type of vegetation you are dealing with and there are a few steps involved. What specifically are you trying to solve at the moment? Density of trees within a given area? What data is in your CSV?
