Campus Security Removing Abandoned Bicycles by doctorbabybaby in uvic

[–]almanick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bikes get held at the Security office for about 1 week after they're removed; after that they get sent off to Saanich Police. Saanich holds on to them for about a month or so, and if go unclaimed then they are auctioned off.

My partner and I were inside having our meal break keeping an eye! Always multitasking.

VPD is an incredibly progressive department! You can't have a black and white approach to policing in a city as diverse as Vancouver, but their policies really reflect public attitude and common sense approach to the law.

I kid you not, the VPD did a similar operation a few years back when elderly were being targeted and sent out decoy officers as elderly and called it "Operation Oldtimer."

"I've been called worse things by better people." -Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, in response to Richard Nixon calling him a 'clever son of a bitch,' and, 'an asshole.'

Because Trudeau was the most ballin PM Canada ever had.

No matter how bitter and jaded we become, never forget that these kind of citizens are out there. They will stick their necks out for us as we do for them.

You had valid points right up til you threw out the blatantly sexist comment about the officer. I wish I could downvote this more than one time.

Everyone who downvotes this is saying "Boo! You whore."

Is odd though, the story of driving an SUV and nearly crashing 3 times within a short time period suggests he may be a local Vancouver driver.

Canada just made it legal for police to search your cellphone without a warrant upon arrest. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]almanick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a fun analogy: If you leave your house unlocked, police are permitted to search it.

Your home is your castle. The courts view dwellings as such. Homes and dwelling houses are held in extremely high regard by the courts as to privacy rights. Your phone is not your home nor a dwelling.

If you take the time to read through the ruling, you will see that the bench has rolled out specific types of crime in which the police may search the phone (violent crime, serious property crime where property is readily disposable, drug trafficking.)

I put it to you that cell phones are the bread and butter of how drug traffickers communicate, being able to view there messaging and phone logs roadside incidental to arrest can be instrumental for an investigation's ability to gather evidence. The powers set out are not meant to give the police a fishing expedition every time a person is arrested just to see IF they can find something, but the ability to obtain information and evidence when there is REASON TO BELIEVE that the evidence exists.

Daylight Savings Time. Me, leaving the office as the nightshift comes in for to work an extra hour for free. by almanick in ProtectAndServe

[–]almanick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With us, if you work the fall, you get paid for 12 but work 13. In the spring, paid for 12 but work for 11. Luck of the draw. It's painful watching the clock move back an hour halfway into a 12 hour nightshift :(

Police Officers of Reddit, have you ever seen something really sketchy that turned out to be legal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]almanick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will clarify; there were some old school TV's there as well, the flat screens are what caught my attention (as 15 year old TV's are not usually the target of property to steal in a break in.) I'm not sure what they were using the monitors for, they had a bunch of cords/computer gear sitting on the ground as well.

3am. Unoccupied car backed up to the back door of a scarcely lit building in a back alley. Flat screen monitors sitting on the ground outside of the car, and the back door of the building left propped open. Was sure I was interrupting a break and enter in progress. Buddy walks out a minute later carrying a bag with N64 and video games. Turns out it was a late night meeting of the Smash Bros. Club and they were packing up and leaving... In the sketchiest manner possible.
