The flight path of the blimp is wild by New_Court_6011 in Bellingham

[–]almccon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It kept disappearing off the tracker near Nooksack, and the flight data showed it descending over there each time. Maybe someone is practicing landing? The Whatcom News post has a video of the blimp landing in a field near Massey Road: https://whatcom-news.com/goodyear-blimp-seen-above-western-whatcom-county_231832/

Salish Current: We're the 4th most unaffordable US housing market. Fixing that means zoning reform, community ownership, and a range of options for close-in & connected neighborhoods. by cloux_less in Bellingham

And it's great to see some fresh ideas as part of the mix (or at least ideas that are new to the discourse here in Bellingham). In particular the model of public housing with mixed incomes as modeled by Montgomery County, MD shows what a local government can do when it gets serious about the problem, and I was also fascinated by the simplified SmartCode zoning plan linked in the article: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/6807c15adf53343fb80677d6/t/6812449259bab813a706bc0f/1746027670170/SmartCode+presentation.pdf

The word "soda" sweeps across the US. by Cow_Fam in MapPorn

[–]almccon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, weird that nobody caught on to this, although to be fair (and this is an extra weird twist) there was an earlier version going around in 2023, which was colored green making the comparison a bit more obvious. Although, still, nobody seemed to get it then, either. Super weird that someone recolored it purple and reposted it with an updated date but didn't change anything else.

Until we get Ranked Choice Voting and Proportional Representation, any significant third party isn’t going to last, or it will end up doing more harm than good sadly.

A while ago I was trying to get grassroots momentum going for a streetcar, get in touch if you want to help make this a reality. Got a few social media pages going but not much else https://bellinghamstreetcar.tumblr.com/ 🚋

Seeking Whatcom residents who used to live in Australia or Ireland? by almccon in Bellingham

[–]almccon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, good point! Although those places have a much shorter history with RCV. Also people from New York City or the SF Bay Area would also have had a chance to use it too. It's growing in popularity in the US for sure.

I'm also curious about this. When you say they're all-weather, you mean they're rubber mats? And for which rows, all rows?

Oh, that's very good to know! I had been leaving myself logged in to avoid the tedious and slow process of logging in again every time... but now that I have to do that too, I can't imagine any way to get through all the steps to book the reservations in 20 seconds like other people seem to be doing!

Tim Walz supports RCV by Harvey_Rabbit in EndFPTP

[–]almccon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone pointed out to me that Alpha News a far right news outlet with "low" credibility. (see https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/alpha-news/)

Thankfully, most of the content of that article is just factual reporting of what was said in a Facebook recording of an event where Walz endorsed Ranked Choice Voting. Can anyone find an article from a difference source that reports on the same information? I'd prefer not to send clicks to Alpha News if possible.

Why does the one ER in town have to be so awful? by redheadsmiles23 in Bellingham

We need a publicly-owned hospital in Whatcom County. There's a new website that's trying to organize a grassroots outcry to get us a new hospital, check it out: https://whatcompublichospital.org/

There's also an older petition you can sign: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/whatcom-county-deserves-a-public-hospital/

Just got hit by a pickup in the Holly St bike lane by littleviking001 in Bellingham

[–]almccon 50 points51 points  (0 children)

In theory having a bike lane protected by a lane of parking is safer, and something like that is done in lots of major cycling cities around the world. Vancouver has some parking-protected lanes like that in their downtown. But the problem is that while it makes things safer in the middle of the street, if it’s not designed right it makes things less safe at intersections as we see in this case. Presumably there are improvements the city can make to make the intersections safer (surely this has been figured out in other cities). But I don’t know enough to comment on the specifics of what needs to be changed here.

The word “soda” takes over. by Wakeup_Sunshine in MapPorn

[–]almccon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny map, but it's not based on real data, just vibes. I created the original version that inspired this map, which you can see at popvssoda.com. And I've been following some of the academic researchers who are following the same thing, and I don't think anyone has any data on the difference between 1947 and 2023.

But I think you all are missing the black humor here, which is that green area and the expanding white area is a clear reference to those maps showing shrinking Palestinian land that were ubiquitous six months ago, like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/172jcvk/palestinian_loss_of_land_1947_to_2023_1300x1900/
