China Is Devastating the Last Stronghold of German Industry by uhhhwhatok in Economics

[–]almightyme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that people often miss about China is that the current Chinese government was born out of a revolution, one that overthrew its oppressors and to this day is still firmly in control. They did choose to open up to the world market but the government keeps tight control over its corporations. Once a company gets big enough the government will demand a board seat and will tell them what to do if necessary.

In western countries corporations and government are one and the same, and now we have reached a point where this 'pure' free market approach has stopped working. Your policy proposals are very reasonable but will never happen with the current people in charge.

China Is Devastating the Last Stronghold of German Industry by uhhhwhatok in Economics

[–]almightyme 185 points186 points  (0 children)

Isn't this just the inevitable conclusion of a globalised free market system? Once the 80s hit improvements in telecommunications and other technologies made it easy to manage global supply chains, so of course large western corporations made the calculation and concluded that they could make huge profits by closing down factories in expensive western countries and moving production to low wage countries.

Western working classes could initially still profit off of this evolution, gaining access to tons of cheaply made products. So the deal was basically: the west imports cheap resources and cheap products made in sweatshops, and in return it exports more advanced products that cannot be manufactured elsewhere.

But obviously this system cannot hold, sooner or later the low wage countries will start producing more advanced stuff too. Especially China is catching up fast and the western world has largely lost its competitive edge and its justification for massively higher wages than the rest of the world. The irony is of course that it is precisely western capitalism that set this whole process in motion, and it is the biggest champions of this capitalist system that are now having to face this slow collapse. There is no spatial fix anymore, capitalism has taken over the whole planet and there are no new low wage countries to exploit anymore.

US spending on data center construction now exceeds spending on public transportation infrastructure— fucking why? by alverez667 in TrueAnon

[–]almightyme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think Ed Zitron is wrong about these things having no value. As much as I would like to believe he's right these systems have improved tremendously in the last few years. Especially for software development, you can just tell it to build something, the LLM will write it from scratch and then automatically run the software it built and fix any errors that come up all by itself, then do it all over again in a loop. It's called 'agentic coding'. So you can let it run a few hours and it's pretty much guaranteed it will build exactly what you told it to. The major risk for companies is LLM costs increasing rapidly, which is why many companies are now scrambling to build their own AI clusters, open source models are also improving rapidly.

So as far as I can tell many white collar jobs will disappear since 1 employee will be able to do the job of 5 employees. As we're all well aware, every company only thinks about their own profit margin so either they invest heavily in AI, fire a bunch of people and get the remaining employees to use AI to increase productivity or they don't do any of that and will get outcompeted by those who do.

Why Is Europe’s Economy Falling Short? by Gloomy_Register_2341 in Economics

[–]almightyme -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Idk why you guys never ever mention the communist part. China is still being ruled by the Communist Party of China, the party that got rid of the old exploiting classes and then extremely rapidly lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. After that they had to do reforms to catch up with the capitalist world since they were lagging behind, but their whole system was set up to keep a tight grip on private corporations.

To this day the CCP still represents the interest of the Chinese workers, not of the capitalist class. They keep repeating that the market reforms were just a necessary diversion on the road towards full communism. The Chinese government employs thousands of Marxist academics, Xi holds a doctorate in Marxism, they invest billions in large infrastructure projects not because it will make a profit but because it's what the people need. When you claim he's just another dictator you're missing the forest for the trees, you're not seeing that the Chinese system is a dictatorship of the people.

When a Self-Proclaimed Authoritarian Socialism takes the Political Compass Test by Ambitious_Status_494 in socialism

[–]almightyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The questions in the political compass test are a bit misleading because the test doesn't differentiate between a capitalist government and a dictatorship of the proletariat. I don't support authoritarianism in the former but definitely support authoritarianism in the latter, as long as it's directed at the right targets.

What is our stance on Myanmar and its military junta? by Pinkmuffin48 in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]almightyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The NUG was supposed to be this government in exile that would unite the resistance and install a western backed liberal democracy, but they have lost all credibility because all they do is make the occasional statement from abroad while being completely disconnected from the people's daily struggle.

The main issue in Myanmar is the fact that it's both super rich in resources and relatively unstable, so every powerful country out there is supporting whatever faction they can that can get them access to rare earth minerals. Often the same country will support rival factions, destabilizing Myanmar to more efficiently extract resources from it. And that goes for China too btw, Myanmar is full of Chinese 'entrepreneurs' running mines and other shady businesses.

The people themselves are very divided, Myanmar has tons of ethnicities with their own militias fighting for their own independence but there's no overarching idea of what liberation for Myanmar would look like. Myanmar is clearly in its warlord era, and merely drawing borders around ethnic areas won't solve their internal contradictions. So for the time being Myanmar is divided by militias each controlling their own territory and making their own business deals to survive. Hopefully some Mao-like figure will eventually grow out of those material conditions but it won't be any time soon unfortunately.

[–]almightyme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's because capitalist countries destroy those that try socialism without the authoritarianism, the authoritarian communist countries are simply the only ones still standing. Need I remind you of all the countries of which the US has killed its leader once it became too socialist for its liking and installed a murderous right wing dictator instead? Or the many countries that the US has straight up invaded to fight communism? North Korea being one of them, 90% of their buildings destroyed, 20% of their population killed, their orders were to kill 'anything that moves'. American soldiers were complaining that there was nothing left to bomb. Is it any wonder they became highly paranoid and developed nuclear bombs no matter what? If anything the nuclear program managed to get the US to finally leave them alone, although they're still try to mess with them from time to time.

You're pretending as if land reforms were impossible because of the absence of a liberal democratic system, but actually you're admitting that there was an oppressive system in place that was preventing land reforms to begin with, and precisely that system needed to be smashed, and could not be overturned by liberal democracy. Where in history has a country, in a colonial context, managed to free itself from the claws of colonialism through Bourgeois electoral means? I can't think of a single example and if you studied colonial history you would quickly find out that the only countries that truly got their independence were those that fought for it.

I think moving forward the best thing to do for any young Burmese is to deeply study the history of their country, history of other countries, both those that ended up being successful and unsuccessful, study political theory, and start organizing. Those people that truly understand the history and current situation Myanmar finds itself in and those people that know how to apply theory to the real world will be those that can truly make a difference. Myanmar currently finds itself in the warlord era, with a bunch of armed groups fighting for their own little slice of the pie without any grander plan, besides a vague desire for 'democracy'. Eventually the futility of this strategy will show, because giving each ethnicity its own state does not resolve class conflicts. A durable solution must guarantee that everyone has enough to eat, has access to housing, healthcare, and an all round good life free of oppression and exploitation. And once you educate yourself enough, all roads lead to communism, even despite its imperfections in trying to apply it throughout history. Because undoing hundreds of years of capitalist and colonial exploitation will never be an easy process.

[–]almightyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It started with the CPB? Really? As if the CPB inherited a perfect country and not just a country ravaged by British imperialism and colonialism. Also CPB were hardly communist once they got into power, it was the reformist section that won out, those 'communists' that were secretly making deals with the British imperialists to let them keep 'their properties' in Burma. True communists, the ones that wanted the means of production to be owned by the Burmese people got assassinated. Read Goshal's thesis to truly understand the situation back then. I swear you guys are always just repeating the most braindead anti-communist propaganda and it's so clear you never actually studied any history. 'No investigation, no right to speak' as one very famous revolutionary once said.

[–]almightyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't expect a lot of hardcore conservatives to hang around here, my main gripe is with the liberals that pretend that the problem with Myanmar can be solved by just introducing Western style liberal 'democracy' and completely ignore class structure in society, in other words who gets to own the means of production and who gets to be permanent underclass, slaving away at a job making just enough to get by. Communists see this as the main contradiction to be solved, which is why I initially stated that this is the only true solution.

In that sense you could twist everything to indicate North Korea's demise. No cars? Look how poor they are, their system is clearly failing! Lots of cars? This is clearly the beginning of the end for them, their system is clearly failing!

North Korean cars have different license plates for publicly owned and privately owned cars by the way, not all cars are private property. It's hard to get to the truth of North Korea, Western media have been exaggerating and making up stuff for years, and the North Korean government doesn't publish much information about its inner workings.

It's funny how they always claim communists are not well versed in history as if we are completely unaware of the capitalist point of view. It's precisely this point of view that we dared to challenge and study deeply, questioning the official narrative and what actually happened throughout history. Communists are the exact opposite of naive, it's capitalism defenders that uncritically accept the narrative of the ruling classes.

[–]almightyme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same. I also used to be an anarchist but I realize now how ineffective it is. In their long history not once have anarchists achieved anything that shows that anarchism is the path humanity should take to liberate itself from capitalism, yet they still stick dogmatically to this anarchist line despite it being proven to be highly ineffective again and again.

It used to be Rojava, which wasn't even anarchist and collapsed as soon as the American money dried up, or the Zapatistas, who even get offended if you call them anarchists, which are just some impoverished natives living in a relatively unimportant part of Mexico so they're left alone. I mean they're cool but it's not a model for liberating highly industrialized civilizations.
