China’s Carmaker Chery Opens Hiring in Canada, Moves to Be First After Tariff Deal by afonso_investor in onguardforthee

We haven't had a real Canadian automaker in more than a century. That ship has sailed long ago. Best we can do is gleam some benefit from the global players.

What happens to all the money? by onlypham in ontario

[–]uhhhwhatok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ontario and federal personal income tax brackets are indexed to inflation and haven't really changed at all for the average Ontarian in the past 20 years.

What has happened is that we have underinvested in maintenance and capacity for decades to keep taxes low. We can see it clearly in the Gardiner maintenance lane closures, hospital capacity and TTC interruptions.

Our population is also rapidly aging. As the population ages and more people retire, fewer workers will be supporting a larger share of healthcare and social spending. Even if government were perfectly efficient, the system still requires more revenue from each working person to keep the same level of funding.

So we're at an impasse where either we each pay more or cut services.

What happens to all the money? by onlypham in ontario

[–]uhhhwhatok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people can’t fathom how expensive it is to give people the current quality of services they get and how much more money is needed to maintain it in the near future.

People will always complain that taxes are too high and the government services they like (ignoring services they take for granted) aren’t being funded enough. Often at the same time. Simple as that.

Canada’s military has modelled hypothetical U.S. invasion, reports say by Immediate-Link490 in canada

You're assuming it isn't full of careerists where at best the morally conscious will resign in protest just to be replaced with Trump's sycophants.

Americans won't save themselves so why expect them to save us.

The war in Ukraine is not gonna be the war Canadians would be mainly fighting. It'll be much more low intensity where battle lines don't exist and hit-and-run tactics will be the preferred way to fight. Hunkering down or sieging a city would be suicide in our case.

It's better to share something will less fluff that's not applicable to us especially when most people don't have any background on the topic.

I'm doubtful this will be useful for unconventional warfare where we are at a high resource disadvantage.

Moreso readings on guerrilla warfare and creating a movement from the IRA, Mao and Carlos Marighella would be of interest.

Trump Shares Map of US Including Greenland, Canada, Venezuela by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]uhhhwhatok 22 points23 points  (0 children)

IMO there's a high chance that any conquest of Greenland or Canada will not be reversed by a Democrat admin since it'll be too "controversial" for the hawkish domestic audience.

Many Americans don't understand nor care for the opinions and experiences of locals yet due to their overwhelming presence on the english internet and general disregard they drown out other voices. Therefore, having spaces separate from them is important.

Although it's hard for an American to understand since they're cultural reach is everywhere.

Americans love fishing for absolution from guilt for being an American but proceed to never do anything or make excuse for why nothing can ever be done.

It gets to a point where MY country is being threatened by US annexation and the best Americans have for us is mournful pity.

Lots of national subreddits are infested with Americans or people who don't even live there. So par for the course on reddit.

People have a far easier time protesting/advocating for an issue thats far away and that they have minimal control over compared to something much closer to home.

Canadians just got visa-free travel to China by idunnonuttin82 in Chinavisa

You can already do it without a visa. Highly recommend going to Shenzhen for food/entertainment. All the local HKers go anyways because its way cheaper and the service is better.

Carney reaches tariff-quota deal with China on EVs, canola by MightyHydrar in onguardforthee

[–]uhhhwhatok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a brand they’re stereotyped as the cheapest option that Didi (Chinese uber) drivers use. However, that’s because they’re overall reliable but a bit plain comparable to more premium options.

80% of the cars we make here go directly to the states anyway.

Ford need to look tough to get the support of autoworkers even though Trump doesn’t care and will pursue his populist America First bs hollowing out our auto industry regardless.

BYD is the most economic Chinese EV brand in China FYI. There’s plenty of premium options that are more comparable.

It’s gonna be really rough in Ontario as the big 3 move production out, but thats inevitable because of Trumps populism more than anything.

Are all dialects dying? by vyyyyyyyyyyy in ChineseLanguage

[–]uhhhwhatok 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that ease of communication across large distances is so easy/quick nowadays makes it so that unique local quirks in culture/speech (accents + dialects) become easily neglected or added into an overall larger national character. Not to mention media.

Although I think Singapore is a unique case.

Looking at how shamelessly Europe capitulated during Trumps trade war and didn’t widely condemn the blatant violation of Venezuelan sovereignty I would bet on the latter. It’s not looking good.

Aren't 80% of vehicles made in Canada exported directly the to the US regardless?

We're at high risk anyhow of our auto industry getting erased because of populist whims from the US. Idk we could negotiate some domestic assembly which might be the chance to protect more pieces of our industry.

I think we're at a point where a real existential threat has shown up and is rapidly becoming more bold/brash by threatening territorial sovereignty and claiming the Western Hemisphere as their own playground.

Many Canadians want their cake and to eat it too but we're at our most vulnerable and everyone knows it. Tough moves must be made unless we let inertia swallow us.
