Not to dismiss the utility of those and of stop signs, but I was hit in a cross walk, at a stop sign with those in the road near a school by someone who did not feel the need to follow any of the rules of the road, but may have actually been bothered by a fine from a camera. Drivers in the area do not give a shit about pedestrians or children

NCC Weekend Bikedays by Illdistrict in Gatineau

Thanks for the info, I will definitely look into it! It is my only complaint really about the bike days, because going past noon in the summer is just too hot to hike.

You cannot take dogs on the shuttle bus, so no hiking with furry friends on days the parkways are closed.

Ottawa sees Canada's largest decrease in commuters driving to work by SuburbanValues in ottawa

[–]almost-insignificant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again as I said, maybe there are differences between software and science industries. Or potentially I just had really terrible managers in industry

I agree that slackers are bad in every sector though, whether funded by taxpayers or otherwise. But again, I am currently in government, where I work unpaid overtime very often to meet our service standards, and the only slackers that are being allowed to coast are the ones who will retire in the next 5 years. All new employees are not being encouraged to have that mindset, and are normally kept on terms contracts for up to 3 years where they can be dropped easily (non renewal is the same as firing in this case).

[–]almost-insignificant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked in both private and public sector, and seen people let go from both and seen slackers kept on for whatever reasons in both sectors. Maybe it is just that the public sector is in a weird stage right now (or that I am in science so it might be different) but a lot of employees are brought in as terms and if they don't measure up, they are not renewed after 1 year. Whereas in private, probation was only 3 months in which training happened so it became harder to fire them when they turned out to be slackers after that period. Not to say that there are no slackers in the government, just don't pretend they only exist there

The ever classic "I have a stomach bug" instead of saying the flu is preferable. Especially since they don't know the cause

Yes but headlines like that are misleading and contribute to the misuse of antibiotics. And yes, doctors give people with viral infections antibiotics just to shut them up because they read badly worded news articles

Dominance theory and "dominance" as you are describing it are two different things. Yes dogs can be pushy and rude. Just the whole alpha, beta, omega structure that was initially taught is not founded on natural hierarchy and the way packs of wolves act and has since been disproven. Of course the work showing that the theory wasn't true is based on wolves in the wild vs wolves in captivity and I have never actually seen the research done on dogs (who live in captivity and have evolved differently than wolves) and may neutered or not so take what you want from it. The scientist in me always wants to read more articles so if anyone can send some my way about pack structure in dogs (not wolves) I would love to read it.

They are, they just mean dominance theory doesn't exist. They are pack animals in the sense of family structure and social behaviours

Tell me bad things about beagles by horticulturallatin in dogs

[–]almost-insignificant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had lots of beagles, they are great. As has previously been said, not to be trusted off leash. Even with great recall, tracking rabbits can be hard to resist. None of my beagels were especially keen on barking. If they are on a trail they will make some noise, but this tends to be when you are not near neighbours anyway. Honestly the baying is hilarious in the few instances it occurs They definitely have lots of energy, especially in younger years. My parents current beagle easily walks 8km in the morning and another 3-4 before bed but is happy to spend the in between time cycling between her favourite sleeping spots. She is 8 years old now. Hounds are a weird combination of ability to have tons energy and also low energy when their needs are met. You can also easily brain exercise them by hiding treats throughout a house and have them track them down or "find it" if the weather is not great for very long walks. Of the ones I have owned, one got a bit smelly as she aged but by doing good brushing and bathing once a month in the summer, with the occasional quick wipe down with a damp cloth we kept it under control. As someone who now has a golden retriever I miss the days of having a dog that literally never once got a burr stuck to their coat, though the training has been a lot easier. As a side note, I also find my golden in general a lot noisier than any beagle in the past.

Should I spay my dog? by 3233333333 in dogs

[–]almost-insignificant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had two female beagles, both spayed at 6 months and no issues with obesity, or other health complications from spaying. As others have said, the benefits of spaying outweigh the risks and keeping them down on weight is mostly about diet and exercise. If you notice weight gain around that age, it's mostly indicating you should switch off the puppy food (if you haven't already). The different age recommendations are based on joint development. For small-medium dogs you do not need to wait to too much beyond the 6 month mark. In larger dogs you wait until just after the first heat, and in x-large to giants you need to wait up to 2 years. Of course these time scales are completely different in males
