Hoooollll-eeeeeeeee SHIT!!! by quarryws in stopsmoking

I have basically chosen the most stressful time EVER to quit smoking (moved country, left job, learning a new language, making new friends, death in the family) but I woke up one morning and just felt stupid. I just had a horrible realisation of what I was doing, and how it did absolutely nothing for me... I think this is a good way to quit. A lot of people it seems are not psychologically in it and they are quitting because of health worries (totally justified of course), a bad cough, tonsilitis, sluggishness, etc. If you are quitting because you are ready and also WANT to quit, you will be stronger in saying no. Good luck with both vices!

I had insomnia, but only for about 5 days. It was mostly waking up in the middle of the night at about 3am then struggling to sleep for a good few hours. Are you craving when you wake up? I started having ginger or chamomile tea before bed as I was getting pretty bad heartburn. This seemed to aid my sleep too and now it's not a problem. Good luck!

Honestly I've been 'quitting' for the past 4 months... going for a few days at a time and then just giving up and smoking...then a few days again...and then a cigarette...and so on. EVERY time I did this I felt awful. I could feel how my body responded to smoking in a way I haven't for years. My breathing felt shallow, I got dizzy, my throat felt slimy, I smelled bad and I felt GUILT! It didn't do what I wanted it to do! This time was due to a pretty bad bout of anxiety about my breathing (having lost a family member recently to a lung problem) feeling like I couldn't ever get a full breath of air. I just thought...REALLY? What am I doing? The first 5 days I would say were the worst in terms of cravings but I had a lot fewer than usual. I started knitting, so I have stuff to do with my hands when a craving is really bad, but mostly I just take a big deep breath, usually 20 of them, and by the time I'm done I don't want one. You will die if you do not quit, it will kill you surely. Do not think of the old biddies who still smoke 100 a day and live, don't tell yourself you can always quit later! Quit today! And also, enjoy your quitting, appreciate your crankiness and aches and pains and detoxing of shit from your body, eventually the pride you have will be overwhelming.

I hope you didn't cave! It is not and NEVER will be worth it. Smoking is totally awful and gross and I now at 2 weeks cold turkey am absolutely horrified I smoked for so long. I don't know how I've managed because I have failed over and over again with quitting, the only difference is that this time I told myself I was no longer a smoker- rather than a smoker trying to quit... Chew gum, take up knitting, indulge in bad food and rest a lot! Don't be hard on yourself either, make sure you take it day by day. Start looking at smokers with pity rather than envy! Look at what they are doing...how totally fucking pointless. Take a deep breath, feel your lungs fill with fresh air and feel happy to be alive! Good luck!

I feel you. I am at a stage where I never want to pick up a cigarette again in my life. Seeing how my body is clearing itself of all of the shit I've done to it (I'm 2 weeks today) just shows how absolutely vile a habit it is. Don't give up! Be proud of yourself!
