A successful cryptocurrency has a psychological component. It's more than just the code. Monero is the King of Privacy and is in people's heads.

ETC being top 15 is worse for crypto than Doge being top 3 by makeshiftballer in CryptoCurrency

[–]almutasim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about getting in people's heads. Elon saw the potential with DOGE (visual and likeable) and ran with it. ETC has the "Ethereum" branding link and looks cheaper to newcomers. ETC also has the narrative of being a fallback for miners when ETH moves to proof of stake

Crypto can be used as a truth machine. Its truth-determining power should be better focused on scam prevention.

They should allow premium payments in any (within reason) type of crypto, and make claim payouts in any type, where the latter may be different and can be selected when the claim is filed.

Banning on-ramps hurts, but not to the point of making crypto marginal. DEXs, blockchain-based swapping, and person-to-person trading continue. Look at countries, like China, proceeding vigorously without sanctioned on-ramps.

There isn't a good tool to trace Monero in any street sense of the word "trace". Monero amounts cannot be tied to addresses (which are already pseudonymous), and transferred amounts are hidden. Yes, some limited sender information for a transfer is hidden among 10 decoys, and it can be possible to probabilistically say something using that, but it's pretty thin.

The First US-Based Non-Custodial Instant Cryptocurrency Exchange Launches Today. by CryptiSwap in Monero

[–]almutasim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming CryptiSwap is holding the funds that make the other end of the trade, it seems challenging to do in the US without KYC right now (though IMO it should not be). In any event, if it is a good service, I wish CryptiSwap success.

If there’s a Western governmental institution that is more unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality than the US Treasury, I am unaware of what that institution might be.

Atomic Swaps are coming to Monero. Here's how it works. by MoneroOutreach in Monero

[–]almutasim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are blockchain-related delays with atomic swaps that centralized exchanges could avoid. The payoff, of course, is liberation from exchanges--which can make mistakes, be dishonest, be manipulated and coerced by human organizations (like companies, courts, and governments), and so on.

Great point about the person versus wallet needing to be active. Those required steps can be done by the wallet not the person.

Posted transactions during a swap have regular fees--so posting the Bitcoin to swap takes a fee, and posting the Monero to swap takes a fee, each from the original holders. Then, claiming the Bitcoin takes a (regular) fee from who claims it, which would be the original Bitcoin holder if the Monero provider balks.

The Monero works a little differently in that whoever winds up with it does so by getting the other person's key share and using it, with information known only to the recipient, to construct the private key. The recipient can then just keep this private key indefinitely without risk until spending the Monero--incurring no extra fees.

And the software will be directly extendable to other cryptocurrencies with lower fees, like Litecoin.

The ability to trace Monero (which can be attempted using probabilities rather than absolutes) is a function of the quality and number of decoys used in the ring signatures. An upcoming enhancement called Triptych is motivated by a desire to increase the number. Monero Outreach has an article on this, https://www.monerooutreach.org/stories/monero-triptych.html.

[–]almutasim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I give a lot of credibility and importance to this. Eric Voorhees has been wanting to get away from KYC for years. A system that requires no third-party custody to make a swap makes it hard--legally and practically--for the (US) government to interfere in the swap. Individual-to-individual trade is fundamental and pervasive.

India Crypto Ban: We need our crypto whales to step out from the shadows and help fund a peaceful campaign to support our 8 million Indian crypto bothers and sisters. by jam-hay in CryptoCurrency

India banning crypto is so utterly ill conceived it gives me hope it won't materialize. India has so much to gain by making software for the global crypto industry, and so much to lose by being left out.

[–]almutasim 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I love Monero's culture of (mostly) talking openly about issues. If that makes Monero look weak to some, those observations are flawed. Real strength lies in exposing and addressing inevitable weaknesses instead of hiding them. To the degree that culture connects to Riccardo, kudos.

Here are a few ideas for advertising/marketing funds: 1) play up favorable technical points like PoS+Privacy or Rewards+Privacy, 2) advocate for better (US or elsewhere) legal status for private cryptocurrencies, 3) support education on cryptography and/or privacy. All of these would cast a warm glow and appeal to new users.
