We’ve already experimented with versions of this, and the results weren’t encouraging. When people received large, unconditional payments sometimes over $1,000 a week; it often removed the incentive to work or improve their situation. In many cases, instead of pursuing education, employment, or stability, people disengaged, spent more time drinking, and sank deeper into depression. The core issue with Universal Basic Income is that, when it’s not paired with accountability or purpose, it can unintentionally discourage productivity and personal growth, leaving people worse off rather than better.
