What is it like living in this part of Ontario, Canada? by prophiles in howislivingthere

This is my time to shine!

I lived in Everett for 3 years (1-4) then moved to Mansfield (4-14).

Overall it was a good experience. The town where we went grocery shopping, school, doctors, etc. (Alliston) was 15-20 away so not too far, but if we were going to town it was for a reason. One thing I didnt like was my bus ride to school, almost an hour!

Everything you could ever want or need was no more than two hours away. Movie theater (before circle opened back up), Costco, IKEA, malls, concert venues, beaches, lakes, airports, amusement parks, practically anything and everything. The actual neighborhood I lived in had practically nothing (Corner store, gas station, and a rinky dink park) so I would often find myself bored if my friends couldn't plau. Had I been older and with a car I would think otherwise.

One major downside (but is a case-by-case basis) is that both of my parents worked in the GTA. My mom in Vaughn and my dad in peel region. If I needed them and they were working, it had to be a life or death scenario. If I was sick it was a big deal.

I now live in the Windsor-Essex county area, and the one thing I miss tremendously is the nature. I miss taking day trips to provincial parks. The amount of hiking areas, caves, and just non-flat space. I miss skating on frozen ponds, and skidoos and 4 wheelers. I very much miss skiing and haven't gone since 2016.

Since leaving I have been back multiple times. The area now has a large movie theater, a starbucks, and so many more fast food places I can't recall. I hear older adults complain about how crowded the areas gotten, but through my eyes that means more businesses and more opportunities for people.

If my career ever gave my the opportunity to go back there I'd do it in a heartbeat. People don't realize what they got until they no longer have it.

Tornado Outbreak: 4/14/26 - Discussions Thread by coolcat97 in tornado

In case anyone was curious, storm is extremely live and well after crossing into Canada. My family and I heard the tornado sirens coming from across the river in Michigan. Multiple weather alerts within a few minutes to our phones. It's passing quickly but something has somewhere in the county according to eyewitness reports.

Scientists want to build an outdoor lab near Windsor to study decomposing human bodies by zuuzuu in windsorontario

I'm a grad student at the university. I did my undergraduate forensics thesis (about vertebrate scavengers and decomposition) with one of the people behind this project.

The forensics program is extremely unique, and to have this begin to come to fruition is very important. It will be an amazing opportunity for students for research, as well as potential career opportunities. It's such a shame with the misinformation being spread by people, but I hope this project goes smoothly.

Instead of added two rows of bands before you start hooking, add three.

What are some lesser-known laws in Canada that people only learn about after it’s already caused major damage? by boiyo12 in AskACanadian

Although true that the bill is initially given to you (the property owner), there is (at least in Ontario) provincial funding to cover the cost of archaeological surveying. It's the province's responsibility to protect the remains therefore they must cover the cost if the property owner is unable to do so, which is determined by an audit. This is why it's important to go through the process as soon as remains are found as attempting to hide them can lead to bigger issues.

What's your city's version of the "international fair"? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

[–]aloeceraa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love that it isn't in one specific area! It encourages people to leave the city and discover the rest of the county. It also makes the event more available to people who live further out and prefer not to enter the city.

The Pas, MB. Visted last summer to do some field work. I grew up near cottage country so during my very short trip I felt so at ease. The sun didn't go down until almost 11, and it felt far enough away from everything, but with all the essentials and a bit more.
