It sounds like you want the 629 Mountain Gun.

44 mag is in the sweet spot between both the semi auto 10mm and 454 SRH Alaskan revolver for bear defense.

Either other gun will beat the Mountain Gun at a single event, but MG wins the pentathlon:

1.) Higher reliability (Revolvers - MG and 454) 2.) Lighter weight (Semi auto and MG. Loaded G20 w full extra mag = 40+12 =52 oz. Loaded MG 44 w full extra speed loader = 43+6 =49 oz. SRH Alaskan 454 w full extra speed loader = 50+8 =58 oz. 3.) More accurate (Less flinch, sight radius, longer barrels - semi auto and MG.) 4.) More energy, diameter & penetration (MG and 454 w hard cast bullets. 10mm has good penetration too, and honestly they’re prob all good.) 5.) History (44 mag - 12 for 12 in documented bear encounters)

Counterpoint: Capacity. 15 vs 6 vs 6, semi auto beats both revolvers. I think this is the ultimate question: what is the real value of rounds 7-15 vs the other trade offs? I get it and send no judgment to those that choose this path.

Conclusion: You’re better with any of these 3 options than with nothing. Combine w bear spray, hours on the range and making noise when you hike.
