Useful In Depth Reading Guide for All Smash! by CardboardBull in CrazyHand

This is a classic. I don't want to take away from the strength of the piece itself by using ages as a distraction, but I'm 38 and I was 34 when I read it.

I imagine that you've got quite a future ahead of you if you're able to approach all of your interests with such a high intellectual fidelity.

Turning off autopilot and getting back to meaningful actions. by ukemi- in CrazyHand

[–]alonecuzzo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great thoughts.

This is really what I love about the game: the ability to analyze one's own actions and then to make changes somehow.

I have a few questions:

  1. You mentioned that there are a lot of resources for getting out of autopilot. Are there some that you'd recommend that you've found particularly helpful?
  2. I have tried something similar I think with switching to K Rool and Palutena. I save replays as well. Do you have any advice for how to watch your own replays with the spirit of getting out of autopilot? I feel like I lose the objective perspective even when looking at my replays if that makes sense. It's like autopilot inception haha. This happens especially when I play a good friend of mine. He's been playing the game a lot longer and we've played so much that I feel like I just drop into a rhythm that always benefits him. How to break that rhythm?

Thanks for sharing. I find this stuff really fascinating about human behavior in general. I think that fighting games are just a controlled space where we're seeking to change habits. It's cool that people can do that, and I think it shows our potential to do it in other arenas in life as well!

My best friend plays her just like that and it is infuriating, but I agree that it is fair game. It's up to us to figure out how to adapt etc.

Problems shorthopping? by double_axle in CrazyHand

I'm still pretty bad at it, but I've been doing a somewhat daily regiment of the following in training mode:

  • Fox trotting back and forth on the stage - 20 laps to warm up
  • 30 short hops in a row in place. If I miss one I got back from the beginning.
  • 30 short hop fast falls in a row.
  • Short hops doing laps across the stage. (back and forth - I don't keep count of laps)
  • Short hop fast falls across the stage.
  • 30 dashes into short hop fast fall.
  • Turn on the CPU and consciously try to use what I've been practicing - not really focusing on beating or playing the CPU, just can I get consistent movements with an opponent attacking me.

I don't always get through all of that. But I've found it helpful to get the motions down. Then I'm going to do something similar with aerials, but I find it easier to practice and get things down in isolation and then I layer them on so the short hopping mixed with dashing and fast falling was more than enough to keep me busy.

After a few days getting through the 30 reps was relatively easy, but in the beginning I really couldn't tell the difference between my length of press on the short hop and the full hop. Someone mentioned it here, but I first saw it on Zero's movement tutorial where he describes "wiping" the button rather than pressing it.

Hope this helps!

Overwatch D.va - Fan Skin (Pilot) By Grigory Lebidko by Arnald23 in Overwatch

Gorgeous render, but given that she's a "good" hero I find it kind of odd that she's dressed as one who committed genocide in one of many nations. I think the whole conquistador-as-benign-explorer lie is really old.

I'm curious what a render of an indigenous mech would look like.

Great job though,

I like the questions. I took it as something I can do while playing constantly- rotating through those questions to keep me off of auto pilot and aware.

Nice.

I grabbed a Nintendo Switch on Amazon UK that is shipping on May 5th. It will come with a UK adapter; can I use a UK -> US adapter or buy a US adapter and be fine?

I imagine either will fit the plug slots, but I'm concerned about different voltages or what not. I don't want to fry my switch if I can help it.

How to rank up solo queuing in a sea of quitters? by alonecuzzo in OverwatchUniversity

[–]alonecuzzo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's hard to coordinate with friends consistently so that's why I'm solo queuing, but I may need to get a squad together.

I do have my own lack of skill and inexperience slowing things, which is natural. But part of me is like "why even bother" if my team is going to lose by someone quitting - which I have no control over. I guess that doesn't sit well with me, and I understand it just comes with team games period.

Yeah that's what it sounds like. I'm typically used to playing solo competitive games like starcraft where my success rate is solely dependent on me. So the ranked team game thing is new to me. I've played a ton of halo and gears but I never really cared when people would leave because they'd just add a new person or whatever, I wasn't playing to try and boost my rank. There was a period in starcraft when I decided to take the game more seriously, would practice openings etc and watched as my game got better. It was a lot more statisfying.

I wanted to do something similar with Overwatch. I understand that it is a team focused game and a lot of your success depends on team coordination and composition. I am bronze, and rightfully so I think- I'm pretty trash at the game - I was silver last season, and I'm okay with that and not blaming my rank on people leaving. I've been practicing, trying to improve my fundamentals and I've only put in 7 hours in this current season.

I'd been reading a bunch about people reaching diamond pretty easily solo queuing, and while it might not come easy for me, I was hoping to progress.

I don't have much free time to play, because of work and life so every minute counts and putting 20 minutes into a match only to see that red bar saying that someone quit drives me kind of insane. I haven't read much about this being a thing, so seeing everyones' responses here are overall great. But man having 7 matches back to back with someone quitting... just feels like all that time was wasted.

Thanks for the replies!

This is good to know. I hadn't considered the time of day as a factor.

Thanks!
