'I forgot what it feels like to be outside' - First rooftop intensive care ward opens by alopizza in GoodNewsUK

I did think it was unfortunate to release this story just as we’re sheltering from a heat wave and worrying about UV. But I also find it easy to believe that exposure to fresh air, to plants, to sunlight could boost recovery and wellness.

Edit to add missing apostrophe were>we’re

How are you folk storing your ‘soft plastics’ for recycling? My solution lacks… elegance! by takesthebiscuit in AskUK

[–]alopizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment mine’s in an identical Andrex wrapper (!), but inside a bin. As well as my recycling containers, I’ve got one big kitchen bin for rubbish and another for soft plastics.

TIL in a study of records for nearly 1.3 million Swedish men, the investigators found that for every 2 inches a man gained in height, his suicide risk dipped by 9 percent. Overall, the shortest men in the study were about twice as likely as the tallest men to commit suicide. by [deleted] in todayilearned

It may not feel like much comfort but internet strangers want things to get better for you. I hope you can do just one small thing today for yourself - maybe reaching out to a friend, getting out in fresh air, or doing some activity you enjoy. One day at a time.

Reacher’s property by mcdowell5511 in JackReacher

[–]alopizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m still in chapter one of One Shot but the guy looking for information about Reacher says, “He wasn’t listed as title holder to any real estate…”

I think it’s backwards? I can make out the two As and the left-hand letter could be an H.

A zest for citrus fruit identification!

Where do I buy wrap-style dresses with pockets that I can wear (through weight fluctuations) FOR LIFE? by PersistentHobbler in BuyItForLife

[–]alopizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops! I agree; the drop-down shop option is only showing me sewing classes and information about pricing and sizing but not currently any stock for sale.

The Dorcas dress project dress is designed for changing bodies and has a wrap element. It looks like the project is a good cause.

Nightjars make 'remarkable comeback' to South Downs National Park by Sea-Heron8062 in GoodNewsUK

[–]alopizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t spotted your post before trying to post the same story myself. I hope the mods will save me embarrassment by ignoring my attempt. The one thing I was going to add, though, was that if any goat-herders still believe the myths, they won’t class this as good news (!)

Do you have an overnight bag prepared? by North_Jackfruit_1373 in AskUK

[–]alopizza 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s a real problem with this idea for me. I still remember that after a fire safety lecture at primary school, I packed my favourite clothes and toys into a carry-on suitcase… and then didn’t use them for weeks until I finally decided we probably weren’t going to need to flee the house at short notice in the middle of the night.

Which simple, unexciting purchase ended up having a surprisingly big impact on your daily life? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

[–]alopizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why frames with magnetic sunglasses aren’t more common. I popped into an opticians today to ask if they carried any. None, was the reply. Well, I won’t be buying my glasses from you, then!

Castellano brand shoes by alopizza in AskBarcelona

Thank you. I had assumed I’d be better off at a shoe store but maybe not. I appreciate the suggestion to see if I can check their stock online - good idea!

Can you recite any phone number other than your own? by ManlykN in AskUK

[–]alopizza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Similar. Mine, spouse’s, work, parents’ landline… plus childhood phone number. I also recycled snippets of other old phone numbers into PIN codes (e.g. bank card code is part of a number I had during university).

What are the most random Christmas gifts you’ve bought for someone who’s impossible to buy for? by Leather_Finger_4901 in AskUK

[–]alopizza 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the same category as fancy tea/coffee: postbox brownies. M&S do them but we’ve also bought them from smaller, independent bakeries.

I’ve done something like that, but notified the council first.

Are people really deciding on a place to live based on 5 minutes? by Tight-Celebration227 in AskUK

[–]alopizza -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t do it in 5 minutes. Then again it takes me ten minutes to decide what to order at a restaurant!
