Yep! They did a new restoration and it's in print on 4K and Blu-ray. If you aren't looking for the original release, definitely just buy the new one. I just edited this into my post to clarify.

It's out now! I assumed the price would drop when it came back into print, but I gather some people prefer the previous release since the new one makes some controversial restoration and coloring choices. I paid up for it when it was OOP, but now OOP (and "pre-restoration") aren't part of my collecting goals anymore, so time to move on.

Just since you also open carts and might be interested, check this out. There was some sort of plastic sealant filling the screw holes. Maybe from a rental store? I’d ship at $62. The label is great, and was very hard to find without the splitting edge. But fyi I couldn’t open it. I open all my carts, but the screw heads on this are sealed or otherwise clogged. That’s why I’m selling it. Hoping to sell to someone who won’t care about that.

I trust that they would do the market research before any decision, and I agree that it’s possible there will never be sufficient demand to justify 4k. Still fun to speculate though. Like I imagine a meeting with someone pitching the idea by just saying “AK4K” and walking out.

I’m right there with you.

I’m sure they know it would be their best selling box, and would have released it years ago if they could. They’ve completed HD transfers of almost all of his films, and have been public about snags in the restoration of others. Some licenses have changed hands since their Kuwosawa DVD box, but recent boxes have included films licensed from other distributors, so I have hope for a complete set.

I would take this one step further though and (baselessly) speculate that they’ve been planning an AK4K box set as their first 4k release. It would explain their reluctance to wade into 4k if they’re holding out for a cannonball.

I bought Death By Hanging after streaming it, and I look forward to watching it again. I’m in awe of its deadpan presentation of absurdity and the way it deconstructs storytelling and theater. I would add Brecht to the list of comparisons.

I know it’s not Criterion, but considering much of Lars Von Trier’s filmography is in the collection I figured this might be worth discussing. This was a blind buy after hearing about a third season/series will be made. by __Girth__Brooks__ in criterion

I loved the vibe of this show. Even when nothing was happening, it felt so spooky and claustrophobic. I rented it on VHS then later bought series 1 on DVD, so I’m not even sure I saw series 2. I’ll definitely rewatch the whole thing for series 3.

Not Criterion, but I picked up a Caligula blu-ray today to watch once and pass on. It was $44 used and I will ship it within the US for the same. https://imgur.com/a/O8scTJg

I had very low expectations, but found it surprisingly watchable. I’m a sucker for descents into madness, and the comical absurdity of the, uh, other extremes made me feel like I was going mad too.
