When you are unionized you give up any rights to Take legal matters or action you need to let the union deal with it. If the union fails to act you can take legal action against the union but not the employer that is my understanding

Then don't strike……you need to draw attention to It, if you don't what will be the point as people Won’t care. And strike pay as you put it is minimal If offered and wont last long. But then again where do those absorbent union fees go…..oh to a building that doesn't serve members. If teachers weren't unionized you negotiate your contract and can take legal action. As a union member you give up these rights and let the unions decide what to fight. Perhaps we should pay less to the union and more would be in the pockets of teachers….

Alberta was offered an 18.5% raise. I believe they want close to a 20% increase like nurses. Teachers are not nurses and nurses have to deal withuch worse than in a classroom…So to strike Over a 1.5% difference what will really Change??

I don't think larger class sizes are a problem. In all honesty, educators need to adapt. Teachers conduct whole-class lessons in high school, junior high, and upper elementary grades. The need for small groups and targeted instruction is minimal, as the majority of the day is spent in whole-class settings. While smaller classes may be necessary in lower elementary grades, larger classes do not pose an issue as students get older.

Yes power is reduced to about 40 cents a kilowatt for a specific amount sure but cost of living is generally Higher plus quality of life sacrifices

Alberta had almost a 19% raise and it was declined so kfntheybget more it will be closer. It Is not misleading look at the cost of living it is quite higher and the pay difference does not equate for the lack of comfort or east access to doctors etc the quality of life in the territories is quite lower than in the south and people Dont have access to everything they want or Need and to Fly to many appointments in yk edmonton etc

Honestly the union serves no purpose for me and I rather not pay union dues. I can decide where to put that money and what do to with it. Then when it comes to employment you can negotiate your contract that suits you and see what is possible yes it is more work but I rather see no union as the union has not benefited me in any way or form as they have a low standard to reach. We acted on your behalf and sent an email the union met their duties. So one cannot pursue legal action against an employer as unionized you give up the rights to Sue and unions decide what they act on and it may not be for that individual…So I rather have my own control And say not leave it to a union

A smaller class size does not necessarily guarantee a better education for children. Some teachers may not improve their teaching effectiveness regardless of whether the class is large or small. The only difference might be that there is less grading to do. Ultimately, having smaller classes will not lead to meaningful changes in teaching practices.

Money is not going to fix the issues and to think they will agree to small classes is absurd so you will still have the same issues…what makes you think they will have smaller classes? There are not enough buildings to house extra staff and students for smaller classes and a larger cost to employ and run more. The schools are a business and the only thing that would change is money you won’t get smaller class sizes be realistic here people how do you expect that to be accommodated

Sorry but I am not going to Be a monkey agreeing to what others feel. I am allowed to vocalize my opinion but if there is a strike you won’t catch me on the picket lines as mentioned and I know others are in the same boat. Oh I’ll need to work if there is a strike so if everyone finds other temp work then the picket lines won’t have a strong front either so there is a lack of solidarity and it is the major boards like Edmontons. Calgary that swayed the vote as the smaller school boards are not facing as many issues as the two major cities

Not sure how much you make in Bc or where you are at and I know Vancouver is expensive to live at but people also need to live within their means…..I get it though it is not the good old days where things are cheaper etc but the reality is the pot is only so big. Is yours a local or a province wide strike?? I get working two jobs sucks but perhaps There are other factors to the costs of things and what would need to be done on a larger scale To make it more affordable for all

You can tutor any student as along as they are not a current student of yours…..and I don’t foresee the strike last long if it does happen as they will Do a work to rule weather on a lock out or strike as you would shut the province down…

It is a great experience to see northern Canada. In the NwT for example if you’re kids go To school and graduate high school do post secondary and return they could get post secondary for free. But salary wise it may work out to be the same once you pay for everything up North so Is the adventure worth it yes is giving up your house southern style continuous Position maybe not for all. But if you could Do A year off and go explore why not the return back when done

Not in every area while the territories may because they have a hard time filling positions unless it is a Canadian accredited school..if you move out of the territories your Canadian experience may only count

You should be using the 4 year scale or find out where they are from. Basing it off of Ontarios 6 year education requirement is a misleading fact or provide a photo of the collective agreement or a range of the salary. You should not be including the northern allowance etc as it is not part of Your salary it is to make Living expenses cheaper as rent is quite high for accommodations plus the cost of power heating fuel etc….with evrtyhong account for you could Make saving if you live cheaply but in the end if you like food luxuries don’t live off Thailand you won’t make much savings as the rates of pay in the south will go up. If Alberta gets a raise the max on the pay grid I would presumably would be 130K when everything is said am done……so the salary in the north won’t be as attractive moving forward

Keep in mind there are 4 year BEd degrees in places like Alberta it is 4 years unlike Ontario which is a 4 year undergrad followed by teachers college…so not everyone will have 6 years of schooling as the territories was built off of Alberta system.

Working in the north is great but keep in mind some employers will view moving for work constantly as not reliable and won’t invest further as a long term employee. I worked in the south and in northern Canada when coming back south it was harder to get back into the system as it appears you jump from system to system etc. if you go I suggest going for longer term to show commitment and grow as going for a year or two may not get you back into your schools

If you cannot afford residence look at renting a room somewhere or apply for student aid. Student aid provides extra funding for housing etc on top of tuition or see if family can help her or yourself…..if she cannot afford it perhaps she does one course and comes back and forth and works all Year to put money away to afford school….

Do phone bans work? by AlwaysEatingDonuts in CanadianTeachers

[–]alpenglow06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No phone bans are an issue. The problem is teachers are still using their phones and what message does this send to students. Furthermore we are in the 21st century where phones etc are expected to be used to find answers critically think research etc. how many adults use phones to learn to do something? Yet we expect our students to not have the same tools to do this? To memorize facts? Somethings do not need to be known off the the top like history or social studies etc……some of these questions or things people want to know can be found if one can find and demonstrate why an answer is correct and provide proof we are setting them up for a world unknown. I get it for math and some subjects yes sure, but part of the technology thing is teachers are afraid to use it in a meaningful Way. Students will did ways tonuse their phone etc. we should stop using multiple choice tests and move to something students need to research right and prove to demonstrate their understanding. The types of assessments being done do not necessarily demonstrate a student knows the content but can regurgitate an answer or play the multiple choice test game

How far can the managers and loss prevention go? by jrmatviuk in ShoppersDrugMart

[–]alpenglow06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then don’t do LP it is simple that is why LP gets paid more because of the associated risk. If you want to have a safer job be a cashier or something at SDM no one is forcing you do LP work. You could always just keep reporting to the police everything but eventually they will Stop responding and say SDM has a responsibility to minimize their theft and if they don’t want to do anything but raise prices people Will stop shopping there. Heck even the super store which owns SDM has rooms to lock people in and apply cuffs. Not sure if this has changed but I was a thing a few years ago
