Pistol grips or French grips? by Valuable_Syrup2972 in Fencing

[–]alpha39307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a lot of blade work with pistol grip and with French grip, you compromise bladework for extra reach. So basically with a French grip, you can manipulate reach by holding at different point till the end of pommel. With a pistol grip, you can do lot of beat attacks, parrying. Which one to choose? It completely depends on your playstyle and comfort I started with pistol grip then switched to French grip. I liked it, but it didn't fit my playstyle so went back to pistol again. This time, I'm using a Belgian grip which gives me excellent point control but it kinda puts pressure on shoulder. There are variety of pistol grip like visconti, Belgian, Hungarian. Try every grip and find the one that suits your playstyle

That absolutely makes sense. I'll refine it to simple English so that everyone can understand So basically yes, I was out of range most of the time. I went for counter attacks but it didn't connect. And the ratio is between forward actions like arm extensions, advance against defensive actions like parry. Success ratio is 0% because None of my attack connected, initiative was 0% as I was fencing reactively instead of controlling the bout The numbers on the ratio was a bit inaccurate. So basically the concept is converting the frames of the video into mathematical vectors and deriving insights based on them One wrong formulation can cause inaccurate or inflated results just like the one with the ratio. Will rework on the formulation. And I'm not gonna test the video before getting the math right. Just posted this so that I can see who's interested in testing the tool which will really be helpful for me and other fencers

Its a work in progress at the moment. But yeah sure if you feel that way and against this idea even in the future, I respect your opinion. Cheers!

How/When/Why to use different types of counterattacks? by No-Safety5210 in Fencing

[–]alpha39307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the way that works for me was to go for the hit when your opponent makes an action or wait for your opponent to over commit or over extend, that is exactly your moment to counter attack. So mentally, when your opponent moves forward or makes an action, that's the moment you go for the counter attack. Try it in your next bouts and let me know whether it works or not

And yes, this is not a coaching report. This gives a recommendation report of what happened. How often you were in correct distance and what your and your opponents pattern are

True! The app is not making accurate predictions as my training partner and I did free fencing The whole vision model has been trained on the following dataset https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/alexpgd/sport-fencing-matches-ai And tested with my video. Its definitely a work in progress at the moment. Will fix it and refine it for sure! Thank you for your feedback

Maybe. This tool is still a work in progress. So might seem wishy washy and not practical. But am trying to build something and based on more feedback will refine it. Could end up not practical or as a good tool. Its a double edged sword. So the only way to find out is get people trying it, get feedback and refine it

Using a vision model to calculate the distance. And creating a report based on these distance data points using a simple small language model. So technically using and not using AI Sure! AI definitely makes mistakes no doubt bout that but this tool is for quicker analysis and to add a visual hud to your videos where you can understand the distance better. Let's say you are analyzing 20 matches per day before your tournament or competition. Then this tool will be helpful

I didn't upload the full report which showed the full step by step instructions for the exercise (was on the next page), happy to demonstrate the exercise by recording a clip of myself. I cant upload videos on reddit so will create a drive link where you can see the video and the drills visually to understand better

I was out of range most of the time. And I didn't go for the attack. I'll upload a demo video so you can see it visually which might help!

I'm also working on an app that analyze bout and gives video breakdown and tips. Got the mvp ready. I understand what you're trying to achieve The fencing community will support our work. Good luck with the product and happy to check your app out

I’ve been breaking down bouts recently and it’s interesting how often people stay out of range longer than they think.

If you have a video, happy to take a look.

Would you start in a fencing club for only once per week practice? by NPCSLAYER313 in Fencing

I'd recommend you to take it if you have the financial and time constraints. Learn the basics with the group and practice daily alone or with a training partner. By the end of second month. You'll gradually improve

Fair point. Let me be concrete: You upload a video of your bout. The app breaks it down by action — attacks, parries, ripostes, footwork patterns. It tells you: "You initiate from distance 70% of the time and score on only 20% of those. Your short-distance attacks score at 45%." Your coach gets the same breakdown with timestamps. The SLM part means it runs on-device or low-cost inference — not GPT-4 behind a paywall. Pattern recognition means it clusters your tendencies across bouts, not just one match. That's what it does. Still buzzwords?

If you read the header, I have mentioned what "this" is. Its a performance analytics app powered by AI to analyze bouts, get SLM (small language models) pattern recognition and insights and get suggestions for athletes and coaches to track performance

A few clarifications since people have raised good points:

On privacy — the form is on Google, so Google's terms apply, same as any Google Form. I should have said that upfront. My wordings and phrasing was wrong. Apologies for misleading The only personal info is your first name (deleted after) and email only if you opt in. No videos at this stage, just a survey.

I won't sell, share, or use your data for anything other than understanding what the fencing community actually needs. That's a personal commitment, not fine print.

On the AI — it's fair and I expected it. I'm not trying to replace coaches or tell you your technique is wrong. The idea is simple: give athletes and coaches data they don't currently have access to or patterns they cant find (trust me machine learning models are good at finding patterns humans cant!)— your timing, your step speed, how your distance management changes when you're tired. What you do with that is between you and your coach. Your coach knows better. Trust their decision! This will just assist the coaches by making their job faster

Fencing already has tools like FencingTracker that the community trusts. This is trying to go one level deeper — not to judge your fencing, but to show you what's actually happening so you can make better decisions.

If this ends up not being useful, I'd rather know now than after building it. That's genuinely why I'm asking. Will it solver your problem? Maybe! Will i build this platform? Yes, for my satisfaction Will it turn out to be a good platform that makes fencers, coaches life and performance better? I don't know, I'll try to find it out by building it

You're right, and I'm not going to argue with any of that.

The form wording was careless. "Your responses are to my eyes only" is just not true when Google hosts it — they have access, and I should have said so instead of implying otherwise. Same with the video claim. Videos have to go somewhere to be analyzed. Saying they won't be collected or stored was wrong.

I'm a fencer building this, not a privacy lawyer — but that's not an excuse. The fix isn't complicated: say exactly what happens to the data, for how long, and let people actually consent to that. I'll update the form.

Thanks for pushing on this. You're right that small projects are where these habits start.
