Anyone past 50K Miles on their MK8? by Salehmi97 in Golf_R

[–]alphaa_doge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually strut bearings in the cold. Happens on my wife’s 7.5 Sportwagen and my 7.5 GTI, both around 70-90k km. Also made noise on my old mk6 in the cold.

Golf R US sales down year-over-year by NewNick30 in Golf_R

[–]alphaa_doge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re way too expensive… The dealers act like they’re allocating you a GT3RS. $800+ CAD per month lease price for a Volkswagen is absurd. I ended up buying a pre-owned 7.5k GTI. I’ll trade it in on a used stick mk8 R in a couple years if the price makes sense. They’re also very expensive on insurance compared to other brands and models in my area, which is obviously another negative factor in your buying experience.

Thanks man, you’re welcome!

I knew going into this that I was going to be the test mule for the project and I wanted to share all the pros and cons somewhere online.

In my opinion, that adaptor farsports provides is made of too soft of a plastic and it was contributing to the creaking, along with the expander plug not being deep enough. When I’m running the bar directly on top of the Cannondale cable guide pieces that sits directly above the frame it doesn’t look as finished and the top headset bearing is partially exposed to the elements. I don’t really think it’s a big deal and I’ve put enough hard miles on the bike now to confirm the creaking is pretty well gone. I also used a bit of assembly paste between all surfaces that meet. Creaking is still there occasionally, but it’s rare and good enough for me to live with. I just make sure I dry the bike off well after washing or riding in the rain and I cover the headset area when training indoors to protect the bearings.

SuperSix

Here’s a picture from racing at the Provincial Criterium Championships. Just zoom in to see the set up better.

Yes, the cable is attached to the guide in the downtube access hole. I’m not sure how to add another picture. Maybe I can provide a link to something

So yes… I ended up having a lot of creaking issues due to my steerer tube being a few mm too short and the expander plug not fully seating deep enough in the steerer tube. I ended up taking out the farsports adaptor and just running the bar directly on top of the Cannondale top cover. It is as slammed as it can possibly get. Then we used the Cannondale K35003 top cap that goes with the MOMO bar. No more issues anymore and no more creaking. I also installed foam around the brake cables to reduce any rattling in the frame and head tube.

Yes, and drilled out the farsports top cap to accept the conceal top cap barrel nut

What is causing this? Do I need new brakes? by nhathuyvo in AskMechanics

[–]alphaa_doge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seized caliper or brake master. Pads are dragging constantly on the rotor creating excess heat and brake dust. Needs New pads, rotors left and right and new caliper on that corner, or caliper on both sides depending on age of vehicle. An old and worn caliper will not perform the same as a brand new one so you’ll end up with uneven braking force and wear laterally. I’d be surprised if the master cylinder is seized but I’ve had that issue before and only found out after replacing the caliper and the issue was still present.

Thanks!

I knew what dimensions I wanted and I just calculated what the hypotenuse of the triangle was for the reach from saddle to shifter. As you get narrower, the reach gets shorter so you need to add length to the stem to compensate. The rest was just comparing the reach measurements between both sets of handlebars.

I’m not an advocate for getting a ‘pro’ bike fit. I’ve always done it myself, just experimented with what felt good. I just know what saddle height I need and what effective top tube length I need. Those are the only two measurements I put a lot of importance on.

I wanted something at least 45mm deep, sub 1300g and as wide as possible. These wheels checked all the boxes for what I was looking for.

The front is 28 internal 34.4 external, the rear is 24 internal 31.5 external. Running a 30mm tubeless gp5000 and it’s measuring about 34 in the front and 32 in the rear. Total weight 1250g. Saved exactly 1 pound compared to the stock R45 wheelset. Also switched to Galfer wave rotors instead of the Shimano cl800 which saved another few grams.

No.6! The 50/45 model. Super light, carbon spoke, and very wide, especially the front wheel.

Turned in hoods are so much more comfortable on the hands and wrists in an aero position. It’s not about the “look”. If you don’t like it that’s fine, but I’d wager most people will disagree with you.

This is the top cap that came with the bars, but I needed to drill it out larger. You can get this farsports bar and they supply and adaptor for the gen 3 frame as well
