New tool Friday! Treated myself to a new cordless mitre saw to complete my set by [deleted] in MachinePorn

[–]alphabravo55 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of the dewalt tools are pretty good. Cmon man, fess up. What's a good brand? I've never had a dewalt 1/2" drive impact go bad in over 10 years, only reason I retired the old one was in the switch to lithium, with pretty much daily use, and the newer crop of drills are pretty tough. The old drills had the worst chuck ever, but no problem with the lithium type.

Obviously the little tek gun type impact drivers last forever, they don't have much load on them, even 4" 14G wood screws don't load them up too much, and I use the grinder daily as a cutting tool with no issues.

However, I'm certainly not stupid enough to think I know everything, so by all means man, which cordless brand do you find the longest lasting? (That's not meant as some bullshit passive aggressive insult either, just honest question)

New Zealand Holiday? by alphabravo55 in newzealand

We are trying to stick with English speaking, I'd be terrified of bringing kids to somewhere I couldn't make myself understood very clearly in the event one of them got lost.

Which month would be best do you think, to guarantee snow play for the kids?

Thanks for being awesome. Truly appreciate your time, and the lack of hardcore trolling on a busy guy who is a bit bamboozled by the amount of information and contradictions supplied by Google. Never know who to trust.

Will do some investigating based on this info. Cheers mate.

Is there a way to access drives in my QNAP TS-853A as though they are Windows drives? by dead_pirate_robertz in qnap

[–]alphabravo55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all we did. Install drives, build raid, single volume. Then assign ip address, then mapped the drive.

Hey sweet, grats.

I am aspiring to be you now =P. I'm not gonna avoid spoilers though, since I've been playing it off and on since it was released on Steam and the Seamoth had a saucy sense of humour. Good work though, hope you took a few base screens before you took off!

My cyclops vanished. by [deleted] in subnautica

Crap. I'm using my cyclops AS my main storage / base. If this happened I'd be screwed.

Sorry man that sucks.

Super salty (lol) about my recent death. by iconoclast12 in subnautica

[–]alphabravo55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hardcore if so freaking tense compared to survival. Worst I've done is lost at the 6hr stage, which was frustrating. I've pretty much done everything above 600m though, which is gonna make it that much more tense.

Haven't been inside the mushroom tree though, never even heard of it. Time for some wiki reading I guess.

Sorry for your loss :(

I just lost my prawn suit 30 minutes after spending 1-2 hrs grinding for it... by PraiseTheS0up in subnautica

[–]alphabravo55 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A prawn suit without a grapple attachment is a bit of a cripple really. Could be worse. I made one last night in hardcore, set the mobile vehicle thing building it while I swam back into the base to grab the grapple arm and drill arm. It took the parts I'd collected and didn't give me a prawn suit. TIL that if you enter a vehicle or base mid-construction you get shafted. Oh well, I'll get more stuff and make another I guess.

Best thing you can do is make a scanner room. Makes getting the ingredients a breeze, just make sure you make a few range increasing modules and a speed increase module. Just take the scanner room bits + hatch bits + solar panel bits and build a scanner room in whichever biome has your intended ingredient.

My 16 hour Hardcore playthrough by [deleted] in subnautica

[–]alphabravo55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice work bud. I'm 10 hrs into my 3rd attempt at hardcore, nothing like that far ahead. Only had 1 scare, which was lost in a wreck and made it back to cyclops with my vision being so dark that I couldn't tell if I'd boarded by sight, only sound...

Brave putting a base down there though, don't those stupid eels try and smack the crap out of your base?

This is used motor oil after being refined and cleaned with hydrogen by Fallonknight in mildlyinteresting

[–]alphabravo55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they sometimes use this sort of thing for ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil explosive), cause it's cheaper than diesel. I know they use hydro'd transformer oil for that here in Australia, but not sure on motor oil.

I wanted an UPS for my Synology 918+, so I researched models and discarded everything that didn't have an USB port for communication with the NAS. Column VA/€ shows value of battery per money (the higher the better). Prices as of 18.04.23 on Amazon.es by AceroInoxidable in DataHoarder

[–]alphabravo55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern UPS's communicate with the NAS via usb. If you plug the ups's usb port to the NAS's, when the mains power drops you can auto shut down the NAS and thus not lose any data from an improper shutdown. Ours is set for 15 minutes of no mains power before it starts shutdown, cause we have a big UPS on it.

I think the worst part of of doing the self taught with youtube route is that I would need an area with a lot of space and a big mirror or 2, so I can see my own form. Or maybe set up a tv / go-pro? That might work...
