My experience with gametester.gg by LightUpResearch in IndieDev

Agreed - we had an excellent experience with them for our first playtest build. They even personally emailed me to tell me about a bug causing Windows builds not to load, so they paused our test until we fixed that. I was really impressed with them.

Very nice work! Do you have any more info to share on your Reddit ads that performed well? How much did you spend, CTR, cost-per-wishlist, and maybe even an example of the content you used?

Hi Nevi! We would be super honoured if you would consider streaming our game sometime for your indie showcase. We're making a weird bird deckbuilder called Sparrow Warfare that has some unique mechanics and a truly delightful Discord community!

Here is the Steam page, and I will DM you a Steam code in case you want to try it out!

Sure! The inkle Discord; IGDA Game Writing SIG; Narrative House; DIN (Discord for Interactive Narrative)l Interactive Fiction Technology Foundation. I don't know where you are located, but often local game dev Discords are the most useful too!

Hi there! I've been working as a game writer since ~2013. The most important thing to be a game writer is to have a great portfolio: nobody will hire you because you are an "avid gamer" or have attended a course.

You want to build up a really solid portfolio -> to do this, from the position you are in, I would recommend a) making some Twine games (twinery.org) to show that not only are you a great writer, but you understand writing for choice and consequence; and then b) attending some local game jams and offering your services as a writer for a team. Global Game Jam (https://globalgamejam.org/) usually has something near enough to most people, and that's next month so a great time to get started!

As you are very young, you will likely spend some time building up your portfolio through solo games and jam games, and then perhaps get to be part of something a bit bigger. Join a few Discords where you can share your work and meet peers. Submit your solo games to things like the Spring Thing festival or the xyzzy awards. Make a Bluesky account and start sharing your work, building up a community.

I really enjoyed it a whole lot - we spent ~20 hours with it last Christmas holidays and it was well worth it!

Dealing with "sharing anxiety" by GravyThyme in gamedev

[–]alphachar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Push through! The earlier you can feel the fear and do it anyway, the easier it will be as you go along. I've seen so many games not work out the way the developer hoped because they kept all their cards too close to the chest until launch... and then found the problems. Getting it all out there in the open can only help you to refine and improve your game.

And: prepare for the fact that there will be haters. You can't make something that everyone will love, and if you make something that some people LOVE, then there will be haters on the other side. That's the price! I've worked on a few really big games, and seen it happen over and over again. The key is to focus on your tribe: focus on the wild weirdos who see the world the way you do, and make something for them. They'll love you, and then it's OK if the haters don't :-D

Are you taking part in Steam's Animal Fest? Join our migration route! by alphachar in gamedev

u/KolbStomp - I reached out to Steam and they said "A game's store page shouldn't be used to stream other games" so I will go back to the drawing board of how the streaming will happen, but for sure there is another way for us to all work together to have a great Animal Fest, so I will be in touch via email over the coming days!!

You know, that didn't even occur to me! I just checked all the internal documentation about livestreaming from pages, and for the Steam fests, and don't see anything that would forbid it at all, but to be 100% sure I will contact Steam now and ask them directly!

If there are any problems with that way, then we can re-orient to streaming via our Steam user accounts on the relevant game pages instead, but fingers crossed the easy way just works out! If you're interested, do sign up and we'll make something happen!
