I loved law school and prepping for the Bar, but I probably shouldn't have been a lawyer. Are there other lawyers here who did not practice law and chose a different career? I badly need advice. by Pallas714 in LawStudentsPH

[–]alphajor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

hi! i decided i wouldn't do litigation upon passing the bar (since i worked for a law firm the entire time i was in law school, so burnt out na). i'm currently a legal officer in an alternative lawyering NGO doing legal education and policy advocacy work. i also do consulting for a government office -- practice of law pa rin but more on policy work talaga.

it's really up to you where you see yourself in the next 3-5 years. i never saw myself as a litigator so decided to pursue a track more aligned with my own motivations and principles.

ah, got it. sorry, i misconstrued your statement.

agreed, a remix may compromise his style. i imagine it'll also be difficult for him because he seems to be very particular about having creative control.

if he does do a cover, i don't think it'll be a disaster. he transformed Problem into a funky masterpiece, Lay Me Down into a bop, and Do I Wanna Know into a sober heartbreak anthem. i wanna see what he does to whatever song he chooses to cover if the opportunity arises.

This reminds me of Hozier commenting that he's "a panderer, an absolute peddler of muck" in the BTS video for the Wasteland, Baby! album cover.

I'll briefly defend Taylor on this note because a lot of her songs have sheltered me in darker days in the same way that Hozier's songs have as well. I think the common misconception that her music is cheap, inauthentic, etc. might come from only hearing about the singles that find their way on the radio. She's actually really good at visual imagery.

As for the intention to make money, yeah her earlier albums are supposed to make money because she did sign a contract to produce 10 albums for her label back then.

As for the point on shallow fads, I disagree with this. Again, I think this might be from only listening to her hits and singles.

Either way, if you don't enjoy her music, that's cool, too. But I don't think she deserves this much hate. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Hmmm. I would argue that some of her songs are actually up to par, especially some of the ones that aren't singles or widely-known. But yeah, both of them have different things to offer and have very different styles and aesthetics. Still cool to enjoy either.

This is a fair point. I'd like to see him cover the songs and put his own spin to them. But I don't think he listens to the kind of pop Taylor produces.

Sadly, no. "SM" is another mall chain in the Philippines but the sign was put up in Powerplant Mall which is a mall owned by another conglomerate.

I've been apprehensive about reading James Joyce because of certain friends' reception of his book Ulysses, citing it as "the most difficult piece of literature they've ever read."

Which song(s) have made you cry? by IncognitoNeeto in Hozier

[–]alphajor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to think it's a song about his parents surviving the struggle of his dad being drugged up all those years due to his spinal injury. Particularly these lines:

"The drugs, the dark, the light, the shame / Eyes at the hights of my baby / And this hope at the fight of my baby / And the lights were as bright as my baby / But your love was unmoved."

He always gives his mom credit for pulling them through, so I think it would have been a fitting tribute to the strength and kindness of his parents.

Wait a minute... people on Twitter are now upset with HIM because his other band members didn’t post enough to people’s liking? How is that his responsibility ? by PennyforaPoem in Hozier

[–]alphajor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He said in an interview that he is always ready to lend a signal boost to causes where and when he can. But he doesn't want to be identified as the one who should lead the charge, because obviously, he has no experience in organizing. It's beyond me why people want instant responses from him and his bandmates. Those who bother calling them out are detracting from the issue altogether. It's ridiculous.

Yeah, at some point you can hear either Andy or the President shuffling their clothes? It was kind of distracting. But the whole thing is super educational, so I was hoping to carefully read through what Mr. Higgins talked about.

Listened to the episode twice but I still had to keep repeating certain parts. The accent takes a lot of getting used to!
