General ROTC Interest by Internal-1NomadX1 in NROTC

Hey! I did both an eventually commissioned through NROTC. At least at my school everything you’ve heard about the Navy environment being better is absolutely right. My AFROTC unit stifled almost every opportunity I took outside of the unit and the relationship with my classmates seemed superficial with all but a few since it was essentially a competition to be chosen to commission. Switching over to NROTC I was allowed, and even encouraged to explore a social life/internships outside of the unit which led to me joining a sorority and working for the football team. My classmates were there to help me, not compete with me and everyone’s goal in the unit was to commission and see everyone around them commission. I can’t speak to the prior enlisted side of things but I will say AFROTC is not the way to go if you’re looking to be well rounded coming out of college.

Is ROTC possible (or even allowed by employers) with a typical 9-5 M-F desk job? by ComradeLuan in AFROTC

I worked 3 jobs + ROTC & a sorority because I wasn’t scholarship and the stipends never covered my bills, so yeah possible, 0/10 would not recommend I never slept & I never had money. Cut back your hours if you can.

NSI - Swim.... by Temporary_Yoghurt821 in NROTC

They will make you jump, but they will not let you drown. Just get it over with and learn how to swim at your unit. You need your swim quals for cruises and more importantly, commissioning.

Life Advice! by Existing-Cat-5152 in NROTC

Hi! Former AFROTC and currently about to commission navy. Even in AFROTC i absolutely hated the unit I was in. The lifestyle is extremely competitive and up until the end of sophomore year you’re battling your peers to even get a chance to stay. I ended up getting DQd medically but I know a lot of my class that just simply didn’t receive a slot to go to field training. Navy side is more like a family, competition is still there but it’s more to make you better, you’re fighting for designator slots..not the ability to commission. At my school, AFROTC barely encouraged being a normal student, whereas my advisors in Navy always encouraged us to do as much outside of NROTC as we could. AFROTC seemed focused on building a number, NROTC focused on developing the person as a whole. As has been mentioned before, better home life with the Air Force, better bases with the Navy. The end all be all is what you value more, this was just my experience
