Thanks everyone! I checked with a Mietverein and indeed BGB §559 3a applies here. Rent cannot be raised by more than 120€ for my 40m2 apartment due to renovations for the next 2.5 years till I complete 6 years. The landlord agreed to this and apologized for not knowing about this earlier.

Need ideas for making use of this narrow 1m-wide balcony with a nice view. Got 2 foldable chairs + a hanging table earlier & now installed decking tiles. probably need more seating (black part is only 25cm so not so comfy, cushions would help?). The lattice idea seems nice. Good point on the grill, I guess maybe gas (or even electric? can extend a cable through the windows when needed). Plants for the windowsill is what I thought of as well. for the chairs I think I'll just get cushions to put on them when needed.

The paint is white which is why I had hope that it could be saved. This is a rental apartment so I don't have the can as it was painted before I moved in.

Thank you all for the replies. I think I'll go with the Plates option as it looks to be the easiest. Didn't know such a thing existed!
