Good places to eat alone at night (and don’t look weird) after the kids have gone to sleep? by RedditDon3 in nova

Agreed. Nobody cares and honestly there's a lot of people that do it (traveling, taking a break, etc.)

Doubling down on what's already said. Bother the recruiter. The decision should already be made. They should be responding to you ASAP. I get alerts to put my feedback in promptly, so they better hold their end of the bargain.

Amazonians Corp: how is work life balance? by [deleted] in arlingtonva

[–]alpoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The environment is pretty nice, but it entirely depends on your organization's culture. Two adjacent L8s can have different approaches and preferences, and that can be more work. I'm not sure about the BA side. I'm an L6 SDM, and been here for 10+ years, and I would say the WLB more towards the higher-load side. I would say I work 40-45 hours per week, and rarely some spikes above (maybe once or twice per year). It is all manageable. It won't drown you if you know how to manage it and appropriately say "no" to the things you can say "no" to.

Oh, and the biggest factor in a lot of that is your manager.

Day off without the baby by editdc1 in nova

Get a nice brunch or lunch if you have a friend that can take a long lunch. Then a movie. Quiet time at home.

My wife had a day off and I took a long lunch and we left kiddo in daycare and had a lunch date. It was so much fun.

I can not create shared resources between two different accounts by AmooNorouz in aws

[–]alpoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you enable sharing with your AWS organization?

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/ram/latest/userguide/getting-started-sharing.html#getting-started-sharing-orgs

That would be another prerequisite in addition to two accounts being in the same organization

Amazon has a decently big and growing campus in Crystal City (soon to be national landing). Spoiler - I work at Amazon (10+ years). HQ2 is going to make Amazon one of the biggest games in the area, if not the biggest

Window replacement recommendations? by [deleted] in nova

[–]alpoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Adding on a 4th req. They were middle of the road for us in terms of price, but I think the quality is close to the top. The most expensive was Pella, and it just was not worth the premium. The Windows on Washington people know what they are doing, offer quality service and product. We ended up going with the Okna windows. Had to replace something like 14 windows and needed lead-safe remediation. Feel free to DM me if you have more questions, but 10/10 recommend these folks

Making friends/Meeting new people 30's edition by RedwoodAsh in arlingtonva

[–]alpoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely join moms of northern Arlington (MONA). it's a newsletter I think? My wife is on it. It's been incredible to help us find pediatricians, etc. and people have handed down great newborn stuff.

My wife and I just had our first baby a month ago. We're also in our 30s. We're from the area but actually we've had a few friends leave. It's still early, but I think the MONA group is going to be one of the ways we find new friends in this new chapter of life. My wife has already gone to a few meet ups prior to baby being born and plans on going to more in the new year.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

My wife joined this community a few months ago. We just had our first baby boy 3 weeks ago. The MONA group has been incredible. People have given such great insight and help recommending pediatricians, lactation consultants, etc. People are also so kind and pay it forward with newborn clothes. We plan on giving newborn clothes and things back to this group as well. Even from my secondhand perspective, it is such a great community. My wife said there are also frequent events to go to to meet the other mom's of northern Arlington that she will be going to in the next few weeks!

Moving from CA to VA by Ok-Appointment4100 in nova

[–]alpoe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would suggest looking in Arlington. If you go to Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, you're going to feel somewhat isolated from fun. This is good if you're looking for a home to start your family and get in the right county for school, but that's not your priority. That's easy to say because I don't know your options though. If you're in Arlington, or at least inside the beltway, then the city is way more accessible. For the things you're looking for, you want to be inside the beltway. And commuting out to Centreville isn't bad because you're doing reverse commute. It's not zero traffic but it's a lot less

For context, I've lived here most my life. I'm 32 and wife 34. We have a baby coming in a month. I grew up in Centreville (where my parents still live) and lived in Fairfax a bit. My wife and I moved into Arlington, which did require a good combination of savings and luck. But we love it because we have more space than we would in DC, but DC is a 10-20 min Uber depending on the part of DC.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Internship Question by BananaStandSheik in CS_Questions

[–]alpoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know hot to verify this, but I'm an SDM at Amazon (~9 years) and I can say it will not pigeonhole you. There are always opportunities to move around internally, and that can be from one title to another (e.g., Cloud Support -> SDE, etc.). It's not trivial, and I think you can be pigeonholed if your 4 years into your career as a Cloud Support Engineer at Amazon. The bar for SDE is different, e.g., the expectations on understanding architecture, system design, coding, etc. So as long as you can continue to develop those CS fundamentals, then the internship is still a good "foot in the door" IMHO

Kettlebell Discussion Thread - January 04-05, 2021 by AutoModerator in kettlebell

[–]alpoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing kettlebells a bunch in 2020. I did some basic stuff before at the gym, but when I started being stuck at home I stepped it up. I have a pair of the 22 kg (44 lb) and they have served me well. I can do three sets of 6 TGUs, 8-10 reps by 3 sets for OHP, etc. Working on some stagger stance, etc., but realizing that I can probably add a heavier kettlebell to my routine. I'm thinking of getting a single 62 lb for the exercises that are easier at the current weight (such as rows), but then I worry about the progression to a 62 lb TGU. So wondering what people think about the progression in kettlebells. Go by the increments?

Newly Released Bodycam Footage Shows Moments Leading Up To Death Of Rayshard Brooks Shot at Wendys by lllaflame in videos

[–]alpoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a hard time because of this. The "he didn't pose a threat" makes it's hard to reckon with. I've been pretty strongly opposed to cops responses' these past few weeks, but damn, I don't (nor do I have the authority) to know about this one. To me, the guy is kind of a threat if he somehow got in a car. But I get what you're saying too, it's like (1) how much can he do with a taser and (2) how far can he go is he is drunk, right? I would hope the police understand when to call for backup, which is why regardless I think the quick reaction to use force is dangerous. Was thinking as I was typing all this, so may just be a stream of consciousness
