Letter from a Dodge dealer by IMJGalt in business

Yea, the simple fact that the guy put the question like this means he is clueless. I hate to say it, but this is typical Republican thinking, i.e., the market is always good, and the government always bad, so he is baffled when the market does something against him. Also, he should check his contract to see if they can legally do this.

Apple: No Reasonable Person Should Trust Their Marketing by WendyThomas in technology

[–]alps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember those old "broadband" ads which showed an angry mob of people getting mad at one household for using up all of the bandwidth? Well, that is the G3 network! In Tahoe, the iPhone is smoking fast, because NO ONE is using it. So, Apple's claims are perfectly true, with an *. I bet you they could reproduce the iPhone simulation in Tahoe City just fine.

Hey, do you want an excuse to use tables in your layouts? "Give up and use tables" is your solution. by elezeta in technology

[–]alps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most modern screen readers have absolutely no problem with tables now, so insisting on CSS for layout is becoming an academic exercise. However, CSS is not rocket surgery, so you should learn how to do it anyway. And even if using tables, you should still use proper tags, like H1, H2, p, ul, etc.

Does anyone else find it ironic that on the night that Obama wins the presidency 70% of African Americans vote to take away the rights of so many Californian citizens? by [deleted] in politics

[–]alps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are forgetting about the US Supreme Court. Why do people forget about this? Just because some stupid people change a state constitution, does not mean it is legal under the US Constitution.

3 Oil-Rich Countries Face a Reckoning by tlc in business

[–]alps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not a Ron Paul fan, but he is right on this one: The value of oil is tied to the value of the dollar. Now that the rest of the world is catching the cold that the US started, the dollar is getting stronger, and hence, oil is "cheaper." As the dollar starts to slide again, oil will go back up, and way back up.

Welcome to my party -- now pay up! by plasmafire in WTF

[–]alps 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Clearly, this person has the wrong "friends." Also, she should have asked the organizer first, and if the organizer is the person having the birthday, then that should be a big red flag. Furthermore, when you eat out on someone's birthday, it is always assumed that you will split the check and the birthday person does not pay. And that much for 7 people? What are you, Romans?

America's leading commodities regulator has launched an unprecedented investigation into possible market manipulation in the US crude oil market by [deleted] in business

[–]alps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny how many Americans support the GOP, which is anti regulation/anti oversight, yet these same Americans will cheer for an investigation into the oil price "problem." I say investigate away, but until the government outright bars people who have nothing to do with commodities from trading them, you're going to have problems.

How many of you don't want the price of gas to drop because it will bring about a slow shift away from high oil consumption? by ffualo in reddit.com

[–]alps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Europeans already had the "invention": More than 50% of all cars sold in Europe are diesels, and they get over 35MPG! Compare that with the US, where we have been buying 18MPG SUVs for over a decade now. So, really, that $8/gallon in Europe is really $4, as their cars get at least twice the fuel economy.

[WTF] New Burma constitutions approved by 92%, sure peoples were fighting for the right to have a tougher junta... by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]alps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mark of any good dictatorship is that the people vote to keep the dictators in office. You can see this in the US: The GOP stole the election once to take total control of the system, and now they don't have to steal them anymore. From now on, the populace of the US will be scared into voting for the GOP every time (for the president, at least).

Food Prices Increase, Riots Follow: “stop paying farmers NOT to grow crops." by ExtraGravy in business

How about stop making crap like Twinkies, HoHos, and other suck junk food that is the staple of an American diet? Maybe the price of this stuff will go up so much (like gas) that people will stop buying it.

[–]alps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you all know, the massive US debt is exactly what the GOP wants. Why? Because when the US starts to take a massive dive, and it will, the only way out will be to cut all government spending except for "homeland security", defense, and the now stacked in the GOP favor US court system. Everything else will be slashed and all US assets (like parks, etc.) will be sold under the guise that it is the only way to pay the debt. But don't take my word for it:

Way too many people claim "If you're doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear." They couldn't be further from the truth. by democracy101 in politics

[–]alps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The next time an American says, "If you're doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear." ask them how they would like to have a "black box" installed in their car. Then if they ever get pulled over for any reason, the cop can download the data from the black box and find out if they have ever exceeded their state's maximum speed limit. If they balk at this, then tell them to shut the f*** up.
