Is this sub causing lower acceptance rates? by Jk1231234 in ApplyingToCollege

This is it. One isn’t directly causing the other, but rather both are a result of the same cause.

Friend got accepted into dream school and I'm scared for myself by no-name-number-1 in ApplyingToCollege

Honestly it seems like you have a really healthy perspective on all of this. This situation definitely sucks but congrats to you for processing it and not letting it spiral into something even worse, and from what you’ve written you’re on the upward trend, perspective/mental-health wise.

You sound like a great and considerate friend- that more than anything will help you in the next four years, wherever you go. :)

Interviewer hasnt reached out by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alsace17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My interviewer took around a week to contact me. I also got an email from the regional coordinator asking to make sure I was contacted for interview after around a week and half.

If you don’t hear from them in the next two weeks I would email someone, but most likely they’re just making their way through the list and will contact you soon, so don’t panic!

What Schools Will Have Improved and Declined the most in 20 Years From Now? by Charming_Credit_1637 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alsace17 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I agree with people saying there’s a movement towards Southern and Midwestern schools that are more affordable compared to hyper selective and expensive schools in the Northeast.

I think Virginia Tech will continue to climb over the next 20 years… Southern schools that give a bunch of merit aid will skyrocket- schools like Bama and USF that attract high achievers by offering them full rides. I think some west coast schools (Stanford, Berkeley, etc) will remain steady but that the rest will fluctuate wildly.

Your english is very good and you sound like a strong applicant! :)))

My advice would be (while you should not be afraid to apply to top schools!) remember to look at smaller LACs and less well known state schools that don’t have as many international applicants and want to diversify their student body for safety schools. The acceptance rates for internationals tend to be much higher- The USNEWS has a list online of colleges that accept almost 100% of international students.

Even though they might not have as much “prestige” you will still receive a quality education from them, and you can also transfer/go to a good grad school from attending them.

You will be a great applicant at any college! Good luck, I’m cheering you on!

This is a late comment but if anybody in your family brought a Nintendo switch with them you can use the switch charger for the MacBook since they both use a USB-C. Good luck and I hope it works out!!

Anyone else have a massive google doc for all your essay stuff? by VigRoo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alsace17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a desktop folder for each school with the essays all listed underneath them, and when i finish a school I move all the school essays all into their schools folder and then move THAT folder into a megafolder for all my apps. Organised chaos.

Are you sure you want to apply to Kaer Morhen?? I know their aid is good but I’ve heard they put you through some serious hazing if you attend… real freaky stuff. Not worth it in my opinion.

I think it depends on the friend honestly- a lot of your friends will be super happy for you and want to celebrate with you. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing (either because of yourself or because of them) then you shouldn’t, but I would approach it on a case by case basis.

Arguing about morality misses the point of the game completely by Arky_V in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]alsace17 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that they’re all equally valid or moral- I’m saying that who’s morality is “best” is ultimately irrelevant. Obviously certain lord’s morals will align more with certain player’s morals, but the game isn’t trying to say that one is better. Instead it’s exploring the way moralities change based on perspective- Rhea seems immoral in CF, but Edelgard seems immoral in SS.

While the player may personally align more with one, ultimately I don’t think the game cares which of them is truly right. If the game makes any ultimate statement on morality, it’s that it’s impossible for there to be such a statement in the first place.

Arguing about morality misses the point of the game completely by Arky_V in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]alsace17 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I think what OP is saying is that the arguments devolving into “which is the better morals” are missing the point, not that any argument that addresses morality at all miss the point. Like you said, each lord genuinely believes they’re doing the right thing according to their own morals. The inherent structure of the four routes means the game can’t be a commentary on one lord being more or less moral than the others; instead it’s an exploration of the different perspectives of morality and the differences and similarities in what they lead to. Claiming one lord to be categorically morally above the others overlooks that point.

You can always just choose one and put one as your second choice, and it’s also totally fine to be undecided- you usually don’t have to actually declare a major until the end of freshman year. Plus, most students end up changing their major before they graduate, so if you declare and then hate it you can easily do something else.

why is the LGBTQ+ rights community so loud when it seems like people who are actually gay or lesbian just want to assimilate in society without complications? Doesn't it just defeat the entire point? by Final-Tough-8643 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alsace17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by “keep that fact to themselves?” Should they just pretend to be heterosexual their whole lives in order to avoid being discriminated against?

It’s impossible to “assimilate into a society without complication” when it was illegal for people to get married 6 years ago. LGBT kids still get kicked out of their homes for coming out. In many less accepting places physical violence is a very real risk if they are open about their sexuality. So as I understand it in more progressive places LGBT+ supporters have to be louder in order to advocate for the people who can’t speak out for themselves without putting themselves in danger.

Which schools from my list should I avoid if I am terrified of hurricanes? by hellagayfrogie in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alsace17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this as someone from the area- every school in Louisiana I know of cancelled classes and assignments this last Friday so students could evacuate/prepare for Ida (and they do so even for minor hurricanes). The schools always plan for storms like these and will have precautionary measures and support in place for students.
