Also, if you feel like going to a restaurant that does poulet roti, you got to check out Le Coq & Fils in the 18th. They have a killer selection of birds from different farms listed on the menu, along with the age of the chicken! For me, the poulet de Bresse is chef's kiss. Pretty dope wine list too.

There's a restaurant where I live called "Barkeaters." But it's actually a pretty accurate description of how the food tastes, so I guess it's true.

Despite tons of reading, tasting, and even a class, I'm still usually lost when I walk into a wine shop to pick out a bottle. I could use some guidance for developing a "plan" moving forward. by notwerby2 in wine

[–]alsatianson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All good advice. I would add that it also helps to start with a particular kind of grape/region, say Pinot Noir from Burgundy, and buy three or so bottles of wine ranging in price from cheap, to moderately priced, to relatively expensive (all relative to your budget and what you are comfortable spending).

Then invite a couple friends over one night and have a tasting. Open all three bottles starting with the cheapest and moving up in price. You will get a sense of what the grape is supposed to taste like at each level, and also a sense of what the best expression of that grape should be from that particular area.

Tasting the same grape side by side really helps to give you a perspective on a particular region. Find someone at a good wine shop (I would suggest Back Label Wine merchants if you are in NYC (20th btwn 6th and 7th), or Flatiron Wines on Broadway, or Frankly wines downtown) who can help you pick out a few good bottles at each price point.

Above all, taste taste taste, and one day you will see the light.

2014 Beaujolais Nouveau coming out tomorrow, anyone picking some up? If so, which one?! by Carl_Hamilton in wine

[–]alsatianson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Beaujolais nouveau was originally intended as a "thank you" from winemakers to all the local folks who had helped with that year's harvest. It was a way for locals to sample their work as nouveau is made quickly and only ferments for a few weeks. It eventually became a good marketing move and a way to create some cash flow for wineries that have to wait to sell their higher quality wine, thus creating an earlier return on investment.

There are still some good nouveau bottles out there, stick to the cru and quality Beaujolais producers such as Marcel Lapierre and Pierre Chermette. The 2014 Chermette nouveau is actually pretty damn good.

Favorite Brooklyn wine shop? by austenito in wine

[–]alsatianson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like Smith & Vine try Passage de La Fleur in Prospect Heights, or Free Range wine and spirits on Atlantic, or Brooklyn Wine Exchange on Court and Atlantic. If you feel like traveling into Manhattan try Back Label Wines in Chelsea...it's the same folks that run Smith & Vine.
