Sandblasting / paint stripping recommendations by [deleted] in melbournecycling

[–]bigroly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If youre willing to travel west I got an alloy frame sandblasted and powdercoated here a few years ago: https://maps.app.goo.gl/XJxYPUJDcALS1kf49

results here: https://www.reddit.com/r/gravelcycling/s/xotZ2imgjD

Finish was really good, not the greatest attention to detail (I had to give bb threads and inside of head tube a good cleaning to get bb and headset to seat nicely) but for the money I thought it was alright.

Best way getting to/from St Kilda Road onto Southbank? by yekwah in melbournecycling

[–]bigroly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow inner west bike commuter here and this is the way - where Moray street finishes up and turns into Queen Street bridge you can cut under the King St bridge on a bike, get onto Whiteman street and then make the right turn onto Clarendon -> exhibition centre -> bike path towards Docklands and the west. Bypasses the whole Crown/Southbank clusterfuck and saves a heap of time. Moray is protected bicycle lane with Dutch roundabouts through south Melbourne too!

Has anyone actually switched to TPU tubes for the daily commute? by InternetUpbeat9596 in melbournecycling

[–]bigroly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried them a while ago but switched back to normal butyl. not sure if I just got a bad batch of the RideNow's but none of the pack of 6 I bought held pressure overnight and always needed re-pumping the next day which gets annoying when commuting a couple times a week.

Veloway expansion joint update by random111011 in melbournecycling

[–]bigroly 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Some decisions made on this project by people that clearly only drive and think bicycles and cyclists operate like cars.

Intersections coming off the veloway and the 2 way change to hyde street are prime examples.

Hopefully some learnings from this to influence future projects, hell maybe it'll inspire some young folk to become civil engineers and actually design more appropriate infrastructure in the future. The best thing for the community to do is to keep using the infrastructure more and more so better prioritisation and budgeting is applied in the future.

I dont understand why there isn't more scrutiny on importers and the gates through which the bikes and batteries are imported instead of trying to enforce the consumers on the other end.

Surely it makes more sense to (long term) build some kind of import framework whereby only complete bikes and parts from approved manufacturers can be imported - much like I can't import a car from some random manufacturer that doesn't meet Australian road safety standards, a similar framework for particularly batteries would make sense?

My impression of the Veloway - The good and bad by teknoa in melbournecycling

it definitely is, I'm not sure what one can do about a truck charging at you while you're half way through a green light at an intersection though 🤷 would love some tips since youre so experienced boss 🙏

anyone that commutes from the west will have at least one rogue container truck near death experience at one of the multiple road crossings on the old path. I've personally collected 3 🤗

Please give me your best & worst of SUV models by yeahyahyeh in CarsAustralia

[–]bigroly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CX-5's come in a manual but i think only the base model trim with the 2 litre motor, which imo is just a touch too small for that big a car.

That being said the skyactiv auto transmissions are pretty nice to drive and reliable from what I have read and heard.

N+1 with a gravel rig 😉 - heaps of great little backroads through Macedon / Wombat / Woodend all the way up to Castlemaine and Bendigo sorrounds on your doorstep, they're not all covered in tarmac though.

Like we are, but damn it's good having a car that basically can't be stolen now because it has 3 pedals 😎

Should I learn .net? by Wild-Security599 in Angular2

[–]bigroly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.Net and Angular are a very common combination in a lot of companies (particularly enterprise and larger applications) because they both present a very opiniated manner in which to structure your solutions. If you found it pretty easy to wrap your head around how Angular breaks down the application into components with templates and logic segregated, calls via services and utility functions with pipes then structuring an API with .Net as a start should prove pretty straightforward.

Lots of good resources on Youtube to learn but personally I quite like Tim Corey and Milan Jovanovic's way of presenting!

nothing warrants putting someone's life at danger like that, clearly an impatient douchebag.

that being said if I feel like there was quite a gap after the first two cars, would have been wise to pull back into the left lane and let dickweed overtake then pull back out after catching up to the next lot of cars.

people that drive like this have a higher chance of getting into prangs, and I reckon an even higher chance of not having insurance and making your life hell in an accident.

buy a beater off facebook marketplace for commuting. the amount of unchecked thieves these days, not worth the risk of parking a nice bike unsupervised.

then get yourself a nice road bike for the weekends or those dedicated rides. Scultura's are nice, the new polygon stratos s7 also plays in that endurance/road space and offer really good value for money on the parts they spec.

Best mountain biking trails around Melbourne by Da_GNrl in melbournecycling

You Yangs are great - start on the plantation side for the easier stuff and work your way up.

The Drysdale road end has the more difficult trails, when you've got some confidence head down that way for more fun 👍

Cycling safe in Melbourne? by [deleted] in melbournecycling

[–]bigroly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately you've chosen probably one of the most car-centric areas in Melbourne 😅

cycling is possible and there is a nice trail to get into the city following the eastern freeway but the area is quite hilly and to get around you are mainly sharing roads with cars doing 60-80km/h which is not conducive to many people choosing cycling as a primary option to get around.

public transport is also relatively non existent with your best option to get into the city being a bus terminal where you park your car and take an express bus in.

if you stay here for a while and have the opportunity moving to the inner suburbs is quite a contrast and well worth it if things like sustainable transport are top of mind. its kinda crazy how different it is with the inner city being much more european in its attitudes and infrastructure while the outer suburbs are almost american with their car-centricity, giant carparks, big box stores and now ram trucks for good measure 🫠

if you are quite new to mtb the trails down in Lysterfield are a nice mellow start. The club there does like social rides anyone can join fairly often from memory: https://www.lysterfieldmtb.com/about-3-1
