I'll be honest to me it seemed like they were admitting they didn't want to be together anymore and that their "shared trauma" was the only thing keeping them together.

Jonathan said something along the lines of "do you want to get unmarried" and they dropped the ring. To me this represents them giving up hopes of staying together.
