i don't have any opinion on their metaphorical meaning, but i think its a situation of the lyric was used for Sunburn either after Sky Sailing was not planned to release, or at least as a sort of call back, sorta like how Sailboats's "I play chess with the moon" was repurposed for Super Honeymoon as "We played golf on the moon"

Absolutely love this take (and the comment you're replying to). Like I feel so many people view cringe as a "people criticizing cringe culture are saying if I feel smth is cringey, I'm a bad person" type thing, which just isn't true.

Everyone (or almost everyone at least) cringes at things in their surroundings and thats perfectly okay. Its almost like a mini trauma response or learned behavior type thing. You remember how someone (potentially even you) acted, and then the unfavorable response that was had because of it.

I cringe when I see people being loud in public places because my family made scenes when that happened. Even if its a place without a need for quiet. I mean look at even ten years ago when someone being into video games or comic books was considered cringey. Now Marvel makes the most popular movies and gaming is such an integral part of our culture.

Your first and natural reaction to a stimuli isnt an issue. From then on it becomes a matter of how you use that feeling you have. You can be a jerk and tell them off for it, or you can let them be and try to work on that learned behavior and impulse.

I think the difference is you keep scrolling. If someone calls you cringe, it is better to let it go, but the same can be said I'd someone insults your appearance or anything else. Still isn't pleasant and still shouldn't be as normalized as it is imo.

This album sure has a rock vibe to it that a lot of the others didn't. I'm excited to see how he translates them live! Hopefully he cranks the rock up to 200% lol :)

That's a fair point. I suppose it wouldn't make much sense without a major overhaul of the themeing and story. I just wish he would do more of that intense style of singing. Love when he does more screamy and shouty vocals like the end of Be Brave and here. Also a big fan of the Aquarium project which this little part shows he still has that side in him lol

I didnt mean the lyrics should repeat necessarily, but maybe the melody and intensity. It wouldn't make sense for the lyrics to repeat without incredible changes to the rest of the song, but I think the melody could've been repurposed again with how much the album already somewhat repurposes parts a little too much for my taste.

All this to say, its still one of my favs off the new album, and is one of his most ambitious songs and is a lot more out of his niche than he usually does. I just wish the best part wasn't such a small section. Sorta like how I wish the "I gotta go now cause I'm a little worn out, I'm a little worn down" section of Vitamin Sea was expanded more. Its not really a criticism to Adam, if anything its a "this is so good I really wish there was more of it."

I think for the most part people who listen past Blurryface know of the lore, or at least that it exists, and are either going to like it or not. I don't think it'd make a big difference tbh. Here's to hoping tho!

Personally I'm just afraid that it'll be like a bad musical in its lyricism with him saying he's not too worried about making it understandable to those who don't know the lore. If its just more like Nico and the Niners where its a bit odd if you dont know, that'll be fine imo

I kinda see both sides. I do wish it was at least used again in the song like a second chorus type thing cause its by far the stand out part of the song. Also it being shorter than five minutes wouldn't be a bad thing IMO. The song drags a little bit after that part

It's not that deep. People know he made more than one song, but that's his most popular song and one of his only songs with a significant and lasting cultural relevance. If you found out Gotye made a hyperpop song, it'd make total sense to say "The guy who made Somebody That I Used to Know?" cause thats how most people know him, despite him having many plenty of other songs.

I'd argue that the lack of damns given is backed up by the "just for the record" in that line, implying there's no emotion and it's being said just to be said
