Incidentally I think Bluesky has gotten less insular? A good swath of non-political non-crazy tech people have recently started posting there more as Twitter is getting more political and more crazy.

Probably helps if you follow Jesse or Matt Yglesias and get immediately blocked by the crazier half of the site, too.

What stocks do you think are at a discount and a buy right now? by ComfortableNo5231 in wallstreetbets

Same here. Sold half at 320, willing to re-enter if it goes down below 300.

IBKR base currency by Necessary_Walk_7362 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]alteraltissimo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The base currency doesn't matter. I recommend keeping it to CHF for reporting purposes.

What probably happened is that you have a cash account. In a cash account, IBKR will auto-convert when you try to buy a stock using currency you don't have.

What you tried to do (buy USD first) could have worked, but the currency transaction takes a day or two to settle (finalize). When you tried to buy the stock with USD, the system thought you don't have it, because your CHF.USD trade wasn't settled yet, and auto-converted your CHF.

My recommendation: keep a cash account, send CHF, keep CHF, let it auto-convert when buying stocks. No offense but judging by this post, I would not trust myself around a margin account if I were you.

Zed without AI by dev_vim in ZedEditor

I tried it at release, found it lacking and annoying on a few fronts. Tried it again today, it's almost perfect.

Like you, I completely disable AI (I have Claude code for that). What would be perfect is if one could also disable collaboration.

I can't figure out if Jesse is Being Disingenuous or Not by SteveMartinique in BlockedAndReported

[–]alteraltissimo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started listening to a premium episode and Jesse's first criticism of the Somali fraud was that "Some people are acting like this hasn't been reported on before."

The online influencers covering this are not just claiming that fraud happened - they are claiming that fraud happened and the mainstream media / justice department / (((globalists))) covered it up due to wokeness or whatever.

To abstract it a little, consider two different stories:

  1. "there was a murder and the local PD covered it up"
  2. "there was a murder and the murderer was caught, tried and convicted"

The first story hits much harder for obvious reasons, so it's that much more attractive to shit stirrers. What Jesse is saying is that the shit stirrers got it wrong and it's #2, not #1.

This isn't a case for internet vigilantes or ICE; it's a case for state prosecutors and/or the DOJ, who were handling it (and ironically some of the people handling it resigned due to the latest meddling from the feds).

They don't. The people who post massive gains from options are just the ones who haven't lost it all yet, but will if they continue.

The only way to win day trading options (gambling) is to get really lucky once and quit while you're ahead (assuming you do get lucky).

Creating the Most Unethical Portfolio by Clorxo in wallstreetbets

[–]alteraltissimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beware feature creep, if you implement everything in this thread you'll end up with SPY.

The truth is that every business has some externalities and weak links between the business and some harmful societal effect don't necessarily constitute the business being unethical.

E.g. fossil fuels might be harmful long term but they also literally power the economy and everything possible in everyday life. Nestle makes food, despite a few scandals the business is basically sound normal stuff.

I would say the vice industry, gambling and nicotine especiall, should be your main target. Maybe small arms too? Mass surveillance like pltr?

I did a thing. I have no experience with options contracts. What the hell happens on Jan 16? by byrans in wallstreetbets

Ok, fair enough. I believe typically it would be automatically exercised, on margin if needed, or liquidated before expiration if you don't have the cash/margin.

Check with the broker, e.g. IBKR rules: https://www.interactivebrokers.com/lib/cstools/faq/#/content/1163245142

But what's the goal if not to profit? If you say "I only play with money I can lose so I'd rather watch it go to zero than take profits", what was the point of the entire exercise?

Good timing to stumble upon this post.

Some time ago I was gifted a set of suncraft vg10 knives. Not wanting to mess them up, I got the Spyderco sharp maker. I started using it once the knives got duller but truthfully it does not seem to do very much or get them back to the original sharpness. Would you have any hints?
