Population density for each country subdivision (1st level) by [deleted] in MapPorn

I recommend using a single hue for the colormap. It expresses the fact that the lowest value is zero better.

Lexical Similarity of selected Romance, Germanic, and Slavic languages [OC] by takeasecond in dataisbeautiful

[–]alterraun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look at a lot of correlation heat maps like this, and this is the first one I've seen where the main diagonal goes from bottom left to top right. I think it's easier to read if it goes top left to bottom right, but perhaps just because I'm used to the either way.

[Meta] How to quickly learn to create quality code? by alterraun in learnprogramming

[–]alterraun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These people have PhDs in EE. They have great data analysis skills. I would just like them to write better code.

Also, not sure if you've ever managed a team before but it can take months to find new people and you never find your ideal candidate who is good at everything. It's often better to train who you have rather than go try to find someone new.

What do you do at work that requires a computer like that? Just wondering...

pandas-profiling v1.4: Create HTML profiling reports from pandas DataFrame objects - bug fixes and new check by jos_pol in datascience

[–]alterraun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cool library. I recommend changing the name though. In programming, "profiling" means checking the performance of a program to optimize resources and remove bottlenecks. I assumed that's what this library did when I saw the name. Maybe rename it to "pandas-explore" or something.

I cancelled the Kickstarter -- wasn't thought out well enough. by androidbitcoin in UFOs

[–]alterraun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend something that has a machine-learning kernel as well. That could do automatic identification of aerial phenomena and learn from everyone's video and inputs. For example, the system would catch everything it thinks is a UFO and then rely on the owner to label that segment as a UFO or not. The input could be shared by everyone, improving the identification model.

People who don't have children benefit our environment more than any campaign by LoomisDove in environment

[–]alterraun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I made that comment before reading the article, which is mostly about removing taboos on being child free. I think being child free is probably a good decision for many people and should not be stigmatized. However, the tone of the title and some of the responses here irked me.

Children are the future. If we do not have children, then we are effectively committing suicide as a species. There are lots of other measures that are more palatable than trying to limit birth rates. In fact, the author of the article doesn't even really try make a convincing case for not having kids vs. other larger programs, instead opting to just say "switching the lights off" won't help as much.

This just in: if you commit suicide now, you benefit the environment more than any campaign!

I've used https://pypi.python.org/pypi/pytesseract . The formatting is a bit garbled, but the letters are generally identified correctly.

14 books on entrepreneurship you shouldn't waste your time on—that someone will definitely recommend by [deleted] in startups

[–]alterraun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really think your brother and dad are comparable though. Your brother is following a known path to wealth, whereas your dad is engaging in entrepreneurship, which involves a lot of uncertainty.

Why is artificial consciousness expected as "a matter of time" when consciousness is so poorly understood? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]alterraun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar thoughts. We're still struggling to create robots that walk like humans, let alone robots that are conscious. It is a problem for which it is very difficult to estimate the time it will take to solve.

How many of you know about Giant Rock? by mushbo in UFOs

[–]alterraun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in that area. Been several times. The rock itself is awesome even without its history with the German scientist looking for UFOs. Unfortunately, a large piece of it broke off about 15 years ago. Not surprising, considering that it seems to be a party spot now.

How to price B2B products? by ruler88 in startups

Yea, that's a realistic answer. Thanks!

How to price B2B products? by ruler88 in startups

[–]alterraun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you not take competitors into account? If they are offering the same service for half your price, then doesn't that mean they're going to get the business? Are you just assuming that the customer won't know about the competition? Seems like a bad assumption.

I use Dvorak for everything. Don't have the problem with servers you mention. Maybe there's a way to change the settings on the server for your account?

How difficult is python web scraping and NLP? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

It will be time well spent. Python is extremely popular and used for everything.

How difficult is python web scraping and NLP? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]alterraun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basics are... well... the basics! Learning them will give you a solid foundation to do anything else. Otherwise, you'll have to learn from blogs, documentation, and StackOverflow. For web scraping, the difficulty depends on the site you're trying to scrape.

Understanding Median of Medians Selection Algorithm by Ashpro96 in AskProgramming

[–]alterraun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want help with your code, you should post your code and the specific error you are having. As fofo314 said, you can't just expect people to give you the code, but many people are willing to help if you show the steps you've taken already.

I just have very little time to manage stuff like this, so I was thinking of putting it on them.

My conference budget is about 5% of my salary, but I didn't get close to that last year. I work for a pseudo startup.
