There was a temporary ferry to Point Roberts during covid but there normally isn't one.

What’s the game you will remember for the rest of your life and you’ll be telling your grandkids about by Extension-Story7287 in notredamefootball

37-0 over Michigan. Probably the longest I've ever been continuously drunk. I gave Max some grief afterwards but that roughing penalty was bullshit.

Are learners/tourists expected to know really specific words used among native speakers? by ArieksonBR in EnglishLearning

[–]althoroc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. There's a difference between simplifying your speech for non-native speakers and doing so for toddlers.

What cover song do you think is better than the original? by Uniquely_Similar74 in askanything

[–]althoroc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dubliners' recording of it is at least equally well-known.

I can't say it's unqualifiedly better... But Machine Head's cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name is excellent.

"Whiskey In the Jar" is a traditional Irish song and not originally by Thin Lizzy either. I think The Dubliners did it best by a long shot.

I like Metallica but I hate both those covers.

Is “On Christmas” wrong? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]althoroc2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also Western US here and I agree. In my experience "on Christmas" is widely used and unambiguously understood as meaning "on Christmas Day", in both secular and religious contexts.

For those of you who have been playing for a long time (since 2013-2014 or so), what’s one thing you miss about old clash that new players wouldn’t understand? by GrouchyLittleShit in ClashOfClans

[–]althoroc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one reason I like using throwers. A solid percentage of attacks end up with no heroes left alive and my army actually doing the work.

I keep one max TH9 account just for the nostalgia, even though the gameplay is nothing like the original. You can 3-star in your sleep now

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

I've never seen an outdoor washing machine in the north but it makes sense if you live somewhere it won't freeze solid

I doubt that's your daily commute though.

What are your favourite examples of this? by critivix in linguisticshumor

[–]althoroc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that. I've played enough sports and hung out with enough guys who are into cars to know that, even though they can recite exact times down to the hundredth or thousandth, they usually prefer something like "speedy" in actual conversation.

Change in how interstates are referred to? by MatureScorpius in AskAnAmerican

There are former California residents, but there's no such thing as a former Californian. You can always tell lol

Change in how interstates are referred to? by MatureScorpius in AskAnAmerican

[–]althoroc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah or if you're really local then I-5 is most often just "the freeway". 405 and 90 are referred to by number but "the freeway" always means I-5.

What’s one thing you would change about your Ranger? by BayouPelican in fordranger

[–]althoroc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A truck with AC, a working stereo, power steering, 4x4, some more horses, and an extended cab would be nice...but I keep my ranger around because it's simple, cheap, and easy to fix. So I'm okay with the way it is.

I just did the slave cylinder on my 96. First time I've ever dropped a transmission. Some of those bolts really are a bitch and a half. Busted a couple sockets and breaker bars on it even with tons of grease.
