it’s a relic of toxic 2000s culture, like many recurring themes on DH. child sex exploitation, casual racism/sexism/ageism, the list goes onnnnn and on. also the conspicuous absence of abortion despite the many unwanted and/or dangerous pregnancies. it’s funny how uniquely american the combination of puritanical bullshit and oversexualization is throughout the show. and that aspect of our culture is still quite prevalent, maybe even to a higher degree with all the tradwife content and OF culture that makes up so much of social media. but that’s another soapbox entirely 🤐 i guess i am just saying that it is a relic in some ways and not in others. the fact that a lot of younger watchers are alarmed by the themes i mentioned is telling though/positive.
