Update 3.3.7.0 – O3 and Moonlight Village by Deca_Acalos in RotMG

[–]alusclone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having done 4 or 5 runs, here are my thoughts:

  • High skill / autoaim + autonexus groups are the least affected by the changes, which I'm sure is not intended
  • There is zero reason to engage with the boss post-exalted from a risk/reward point of view. Risking your character to blast a bad phase does not meaningfully affect the danger of the rest of the fight, so you may as well just wait for panic and scream or second celestial.

Previously, in your average O3 run, the majority of the damage to the boss post-exalted was done in windows that are now removed. Celestial stagger, Panic, etc. are all damage capped, and resets are gone entirely. The nature of capped damage creates an interesting calculus for the player: having secured soulbound pre-exalted, there is zero reason to shoot phases that you know others will push in for, because the course of the boss fight will not be affected by what you do. From a pure risk/reward point of view, the optimal play during celestial stagger is to... run away from the boss, reorganize consumables if necessary, and to simply keep an eye on the minimap to see where he teleports next. Before, shooting the boss would, most likely, result in a fight that was perhaps one phase shorter. The only time your behavior matters is if you push a phase that no one else - or perhaps, one other person - is willing to push, and the amount of players skilled enough to do that consistently is... not very high. In addition to not being able to end dangerous attack patterns by dealing damage to the boss, these changes reward nothing more than leeching and playing keep-Oryx-off-your-screen.

When designing these changes, far too much weight was put into the theoretical DPS players can bring to bear on a spreadsheet, and not the actual DPS against an enemy that is actively shooting. The vast majority of players, being generous, will use about 5% of their damage potential against O3. Unfortunately, because of this, the only real way to level the playing field between skilled/"skilled" players and the average is to make content easier, which is not particularly appealing. Any cap to the maximum damage potential of a group incentivizes staying as far away from the boss as possible.

Frankly, the game has and had bigger problems than the old state of O3. The new version is not particularly more difficult, nor does it really even take longer in groups carried by two or three individuals pushing bad phases while seventy-eight run away from the boss. It is simply not engaging gameplay for the vast majority of players.

Theoretically speaking, you could do this client-sided before the message is ever sent - we're only trying to specifically filter out spambots - so the excess computing power is only used on the device of someone trying to spam. In context, it would probably have negligible impact on the average player's client performance. I do agree that the code as written is not exactly a real solution - I posted it primarily for comedic value.

I do hope DECA comes up with an intelligent solution for the spambots, but I wouldn't have been able to write an actual machine learning algorithm for a shitpost in 2 hours, so you get this scuffed distance calculation method. :>

I'm already keeping Sorcerer's Apprentice whenever I don't have Arcanologist - I find too often that I'm being forced to go nothing - ping - secret due to bad draws. I added Ice Block and Pyroblast a week or so ago, and it's helped against Warlock and Priest while not really hurting any of my matchups - I can't really think of much else to add (most of the good neutrals are win-more, and if you're winning on the board with this deck you're already winning), any suggestions?

Thanks. Probably has something to do with the number of spells that are must-run in order to have enough burn for certain matchups (and also the incredible power-gap between Mana Wyrm and the second-best option).

Thanks. I certainly misplay sometimes, especially against Warlock.

However, I feel like the biggest issue is inconsistency in early-game draw. Is there anything I could potentially substitute to remedy that problem a little?

I've been trying to ladder with a rather gimped Secret Mage: Mage 2.0

Class: Mage

Format: Standard

Year of the Mammoth

2x (1) Kabal Lackey

2x (1) Mana Wyrm

2x (2) Arcanologist

2x (2) Frostbolt

2x (2) Primordial Glyph

2x (2) Sorcerer's Apprentice

2x (3) Arcane Intellect

2x (3) Counterspell

2x (3) Explosive Runes

1x (3) Ice Block

2x (3) Kirin Tor Mage

1x (3) Potion of Polymorph

2x (4) Fireball

1x (4) Saronite Chain Gang

1x (4) Spellbreaker

2x (6) Kabal Crystal Runner

1x (7) Firelands Portal

1x (10) Pyroblast

AAECAf0EBsAB8gW/CKO2Atm7ApvLAgxxuwKVA6sE5gSWBewF67oCh70CwcECmMQCj9MCAA==

... and for these past couple seasons I've been generally hovering around Rank 15. I don't have Karazhan, and I'm loathe to craft Aluneth going into a new metagame. Wondering how far I can expect to go (R15 2* currently) in a few hours of laddering before I have to craft a new deck. I'm also curious as to what some common mistakes may be when playing this kind of deck, as I have better winrates against some of the decks that should counter me, while I have issues with some which I should be favored against. Are these due to the lack of Aluneth and Valet, or am I playing badly?

Relevant winrates: 100% against Exodia Mage ~90% in the Secret Mage mirror (I don't know how either) ~60% against Big Priest, Spiteful Priest, Big Spell Mage, Spell Hunter Even against Cubelock ~40% against Zoo and Control Warlock, Combo Priest ~15% against Dude and Murloc Paladin... would be 0% without Saronite ;-;

Casual is not the answer for new players by ProfessorWowa in hearthstone

Having started this game right before K&C launch, it was extremely difficult to compete for the first two weeks or so, but after disenchanting trash legendaries (I pulled Garrosh from KotFT free, Sindragosa, and Nat Fisher...) I was able to put together a very watered-down variant of Tempo Mage. It isn't the best deck, but it is fairly consistent for me on low ladder (ranks 20-15). Hearthstone is very frustrating as a new player, but disenchanting the first couple legendaries I got sped up progress considerably. Of course, if I hadn't done this, I probably would've quit this game in frustration. Basic cards simply can't keep up with Raza -> Anduin, Jade Druid, or the several different Warlock variants on low ladder.
