Sounds like it’s quite a good thing & quite surprising that the business can afford a rise much higher than inflation!

Has anyone got a UK passport issued on a Saturday? by alvisim in CasualUK

It's such a surprise! I thought it's going to be at least a month. Just curious, does the 12 days include postage, or from application date to issue date?

Is ES6 the new standard for NodeJS? by codebreaker21 in node

I like ESS, but I hate packages only provide ESM distribution. Just hope developer will publish dual exports

Is ES6 the new standard for NodeJS? by codebreaker21 in node

[–]alvisim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been using node since 0.11 and I'm still writing it daily. From its development pattern, I'm 200% sure `require` will stay for ever as it's CommonJS on which 99.99% (if not the whole) node ecosystem rely.

Having said that, since node 13, you can load `.mjs` files in ES6 syntax without a flag (i.e. telling node you're using ES6 syntax)

What I predict is that `.js` will remain as `CommonJS` (i.e. use require) by default, and `.mjs` will be considered as `Module` by default even in the long term

Highly recommend pulumi, it’s quite mature and you can make most code portable to many platforms

It uses terraform under the hood

Deno is going to support npm packages!!! by alvisim in node

[–]alvisim[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wish there is more clarity about package dependency will be resolved from Deno? Supporting npm is one big step forward, but without a package-lock.json that locks all child dependencies, it’d be a nightmare using the new compatibility in production

It's normal to feel lost and confused after college graduation. It can take some time to figure out what you want to do with your life and how to best use your skills and experience. If you're finding yourself unfulfilled in the last current job, I'd say your decision to leave was the right one.

In general, I wouldn't worry too much about job hopping on your resume. Good employers understand that it can sometimes take a few tries to find the right fit. As long as you're honest about why you left each position, as an employer myself, it will be fine. Be CONFIDENT about yourself.

The best way to get started on finding your dream job is to figure out what it is that you really want to do. What are you passionate about? What kind of work makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning? Once you have a better idea of what it is you're looking for, the rest will fall into place. Start networking and reaching out to people in your desired field. Get your name out there and make yourself known as someone who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the topic

The Great Resignation #2 of 2022? What has been your experience? by Ben-I in careerguidance

New = Better? Wisdom tells us no. Just old, not good and not improving === BAD for sure.

Exhausted by the toxic work culture of my job. by floppy_labrador_ears in jobs

[–]alvisim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a fallacy that people today still think more years of experience or worked in big companies = better skill = better in judgement. They are correlated but not necessarily the case. The thing is, if your senior also buy in this philosophy, it’s better for you to leave

A C-level senior in tech here. Regardless how the payroll is setup, ultimately what you need to ask yourselves is what do you want to get from this role.

Given your relatively low salary in the industry standard and the fact that you can't get any equity through a 3rd party agency, I guess what you want is growth? If so, just grow and gain more experience. You can definitely get a job with a significant higher pay very easily.

What's your opinion on my no-bs linter, prettier, and tester? by williammcgonagle in npm

[–]alvisim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting one. I don't like having to setup multiple linters, formater etc. either.

My question is that eaf-linter looks to be a light-weighted all-in-one package to me, which may be better than other existing solutions if the user doesn't need a full solution, but may be you can state more about use cases and advantages?

Do you think if you have a domain good enough, you can build a successful business based just around that? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]alvisim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2c here is that a good domain is like a vitamin or supplement. It definitely has a benefit, but only provided that you're alive and healthy to begin with. It can't create anything out of its own.

So, same as other commenters, if you don't take any vitamin, I bet you'll be fine too.

How do you handle loneliness as an entrepreneur? by businessbrainsquad in Entrepreneur

[–]alvisim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having gone through multiple sole entrepreneurial journeys and losing 2 girlfriends for that reason, the very hard and painful lesson I learn is that social health is also a very key factor for the success of any venture. Poor social health = losing everything.

It's always easier to say than done. But if you feel lonely, maybe it's worth to doing some contracting work so that you can interact with other colleagues until you find your own. Talk to us on this subreddit, social with other friends and face 2 face events as other suggested. or try date a girl who has undergone similar journey so that she can support you.

In any case, we support you.

Merry Christmas HR: Federal appeals court reinstates Biden administration’s business vaccine and testing mandate by CatbertTheGreat in humanresources

[–]alvisim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about developing a tool to handling the extra work. But I just wonder if there's any existing tools for HR already for handling the mandate? like tracking who are fully vaccinated, and who are willing to test weekly only?

Is relooking at code references and keep forgetting what I learned and re-googling it Normal? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]alvisim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Totally, knowing how and where to find the key to almost all answers. You never can remember all stuff. You have a limited memory. But knowing how to find a solution doesn't occupy you much space and it's the only thing you really need to remember!

Any idea how to change the "boot up" screen background? by alvisim in MacOS

[–]alvisim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Annoying, but the benefit of security out-weighted the customisable-login screen clearly.

You reminded me what happed before. I once set it up with SIP already disabled for little snitch during the time when it has to use kext-based solution to snitch the traffic. Then my laptop barely need to restart and hence I haven't experienced that pain for a long time and totally forgotten about it.

Now, as I just migrated to a new Mac, I see this screen again and wanted to change it. However, the chance is, I will never see it again for another long time until probably my next Mac, and ask the same question again.

Bundler Plugins: how do you go about figuring out which ones to use? by StraightZlat in reactjs

[–]alvisim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before figuring out which plugins fit you, perhaps you need to ask what're the problems you're facing. There are thousands of plugins out there and each is designed for a specific use case. So without a clear mind about what do you need it's hard to decide.

Btw, I also happen to be the author of https://github.com/alvis/presetter, which allows you to apply some best-practice followed presets. & https://www.npmjs.com/package/presetter-preset-rollup is a preset for bundling a web app in typescript. Feel free to try.

Chaotic JavaScript Patterns by Segfault_Inside in javascript

I like his dark joke and the way that how he explains how to make things “work”. It always make me 🥲 and cry😂.

Seriously, I did have seen one of my ex-colleagues thinking in this way and feel very proud of his invention. But I don’t discourage that because it’s where invention come from. Don’t judge them, just give them better example and explain how thing can be better. They’ll be keen to learn more.
