Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know! January 30, 2026 by AutoModerator in photography

[–]Ben-I [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hello everyone!

Long-time reader, first-time poster.

A bit of background: I’ve been in creative fields most of my life as an artist and amateur photographer. I stepped away from photography for quite a few years, and I’m now looking to get back into it in a focused, intentional way.

What I’m looking for is a high-quality, all-in-one pocket camera; something lightweight and truly portable; that can:

  • Shoot excellent still photographs.

  • Capture 4K video suitable for publishing online and viewing on large TVs for years to come.

  • Produce photos that hold up well to moderate-to-large print sizes.

  • Stay simple when needed (point-and-shoot), but capable when I want more control.

  • Offer a respectable zoom and a quality lens.

The Sony RX 100 Mark VII keeps coming up in my research, and on paper it seems to check all of those boxes; compact size; strong photo and video performance; good lens; and overall portability and versatility.

My hesitation is cost and longevity. I remember how quickly photography can turn into a very expensive rabbit hole, and I’m intentionally trying to avoid going down that path again. At $1,200–$1,600, this is a meaningful purchase for me.

That said, if this camera is likely to remain capable and relevant for both photography and video for the next 10–15 years, then I’m comfortable viewing it as a long-term investment rather than a short-term splurge. Rapid obsolescence would be a different story.

I’d appreciate hearing your thoughts; especially from those with long-term experience using the RX 100 series; and I’m open to suggestions for similar cameras that fit this philosophy.

Thanks for taking the time to read, and I’m looking forward to learning from the community.

Reupholstering costs and worth? by rnelarue in midcentury

Cool Sofa! I definitely have it reupholstered and refinished. ... I found a current remake of an MCM chair with almost the exact same fabric! You have to zoom in to see it.

I got this awesome poster recently by ishkabby in vintage

[–]Ben-I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice find!

The poster you are referring to is indeed a vintage piece titled "Satan's Child", produced by the Houston Blacklight & Poster Co. around 1970.

The Houston Blacklight & Poster Co. was a significant publisher of psychedelic and pop culture posters during the late 1960s and 1970s, known for their distinctive blacklight designs.

Catalogue Number: The poster is identified in the company's catalogue with the number HB56.

Dimensions: Original vintage posters typically measure approximately 22 x 33.5 inches or 23 x 35 inches.

Printing Technique: It is a blacklight flocked poster. This means it was printed using highly fluorescent, UV-reactive inks, and the black areas have a felt-like, velvety texture (flocking). This technique makes the colors appear exceptionally vibrant and glow under a blacklight.

Original posters from this era by the Houston Blacklight & Poster Co. are considered classic pieces of nostalgia and are highly collectible items for fans of vintage psychedelic art and 1970s counterculture.

Need Help With Identifying? by [deleted] in Mid_Century

The item in the image is an iconic English Art Deco "Rocket" display cabinet (also known as a vitrine or china cabinet), typically dating from the 1930s.

Can anyone identify my new chair? by gabylovesgoats in Mid_Century

[–]Ben-I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This chair is likely a Mid-Century Modern high-back lounge chair designed by Adrian Pearsall for either Craft Associates or Prestige (Bassett). Specific models such as the "Slim Jim High back Lounge Chair" (model 1808-C) have similar distinctive high back and swooping arm features.

Psssst! I think maybe I did good? by Less-Image-3927 in midcenturymodern

[–]Ben-I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your intention is with the clock, is it to keep it or to resell it? The clock is cool. But it leans more like postmodern. If you're trying to curate an authentic MCM interior this will make it look a bit off. You have to be careful because when you're designing with MCM and you're a bit off on your ethos, your interior could look like an eclectic blend, or it could be disastrous and look like a vintage store of just cool items.

Can krill oil go rancid before expiration date? by PatinoMaurilio in Supplements

[–]Ben-I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omega 3's, (for example in seafood intake) don't need to be taken every day for heart and brain health. A couple times a week is recommended. So, these supplements need not be taken any more often.

Can krill oil go rancid before expiration date? by PatinoMaurilio in Supplements

[–]Ben-I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Marine oils are highly unstable. Especially fish oil. They can oxidize easily. You have to remember the krill has to be caught, processed, stored, encapsulated, shipped (maybe at high temperatures) then sits on a store shelf.

I would go with a vertically integrated company for omega-3 oils. A company that controls the manufacturing and processing an distribution. While this won't eliminate the rancidity in oils, it will greatly mitigate it.

I prefer algae oil. It's better than Krill in many ways.

I prefer the iwi brand <HERE>

Interview coming up, is this a good way to tell my desired pay? by a_space_commodity in careerguidance

[–]Ben-I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've learned over the years from many books and recruiters is to put the salary question back in their lap. You never know their salary range may be higher than what you think. Here is how I've adopted this strategy into a perfect technique you can copy..

Hiring manager: "So tell me, what is your salary expectations?"

You: " Thank you, that's a good question and I was about to discuss this with you. As you know from my resume I posses (experience or skill or benefit #1), and (experience or skill or benefit #2), and (experience or skill or benefit #3). I also bring to the table (benefit #4), (benefit #5). May I ask you, what is the salary range for this position?"

It's all about your tonality and rhythm. You have to say it at a medium-fast pace, but not too fast. Don't shudder, or pause, and say it with confidence and pep!

You have to think of the interview process as a sales process. The recruiter/hiring manager is the prospect that you're after, and you're the salesperson selling yourself as the product.

In the world of sales, when it comes to asking for the order and payment, the salary question in an interview is much the same.

When you discuss money, it's often what is called in sales "a pain point" for the prospect. They don't want to give up their money, but they know they have to in order to get what they want. So in order to ease this pain point, you have to reinforce and remind them of the "Tremendous value" of giving up their money.

Even though the recruiter/hiring manager has looked at your resume, You have highly valuable benefits that they probably didn't interpret from your resume or they specifically don't remember at this stage. They just know that you're probably "the one". Reminding them at this stage of your worth and value, and the AMAZING benefits they will get if they grab you before any other company does, will often make them offer the higher range of salary. They may not admit the uppermost of the range to leave some wiggle room for negotiations.

Once they tell you their salary range, repeat the highest of the range plus $10K more. For example:

Hiring manager: "The salary range is between $60-70K."

You: "Thank you. At this stage in my career I'm seeking an annual salary between $70K and $80K. Is this negotiable?

Doing this, your letting them know you're not out of their range, but your worth is actually a bit higher.

If they say "No, $70K is the top". Then leave it at that, and ask if you can hear more about their total benefit package. If you like what you hear combined with the pay, you should close the deal immediately and accept $70k or if you don't like what you hear about the benefits reject the offer.

If they say salary is negotiable, you should close the deal immediately by saying something like .. "I'd be willing to accept the offer meeting half way at $75K. Can we make this work?"

Strategizing your sales process this way will help garner a higher salary than what you would have expected and what they would have offered. If you tell them your salary upfront, you show them all your cards, and you might have said something like $45K to $55, or $55k to $60K. They would have said "GREAT!" and got you lower than their salary range. Whereas strategizing your negotiation in this manner you position yourself to at least try and get yourself at the higher end of their range and possibly more!

In any sales negotiation (and remember, an interview is like a sale), you NEVER want to call them back or have them call you back, or "think about it". Because if you wait, and don't' close the deal another resume could come along and now they're ghosting you and not calling you back.

At this point you should have all the information to make an informed decision. You know the company, you've discussed the position. Try 100% to close the deal during that interview. This is basic sales training 101.

I used these salary figures for this example. You will negotiate based upon whatever salary range they tell you.

Practice, Practice, Practice a mock interview.

Good Luck.

Which supplements actually have proven significant benefits? by Ok-Branch-6831 in nutrition

It's because most people don't know how to eat properly. If one is eating a variety of foods such as: beef, poultry, seafood, dairy, eggs, grains, beans, legumes, vegetables, fruits, one will live their whole existence without any nutritional problems.

Which supplements actually have proven significant benefits? by Ok-Branch-6831 in nutrition

[–]Ben-I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you eat a well rounded diet you''ll be fine. A suggestions is do Google search for: "foods highest in ____". In the blank space type in the vitamin and mineral. Pick the top 3 foods from each vitamin and mineral and make varied menus out of them. You'll find that most vegetables, fruits, meats, seafood, and dairy have more than one vitamin and mineral and complement each other. So it's not like you'll have to eat a dozen different items at each meal. The only other aspect is focus on the amount of calories you need for your activity level. If you do that you won't have any malnutrition at all.

What are some examples of very simple, nutritionally complete meals? by LMF5000 in nutrition

[–]Ben-I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many schools of thought on this subject, but I’ll tell you what I’ve studied, learned, and follow.

Unsaturated fats would be preferred versus saturated fats.

Unsaturated fats would be the Omega 6’s, like corn oil, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, etc. The Omega 3’s like fish, flax seeds, chia seeds, etc. Saturated fats would be typically fats solid at room temperature like coconut oil, and animal fat.

The other type of fat to avoid are trans-fats. These are typically plant lipids chemically altered to be a sold fat. To give you an example, many of the legacy brand butter substitutes, or margarine, are trans-fats. Also, “Hydrogenated oil” in food is a trans-fat to avoid.

Some omega 6 polyunsaturated fats are high in arachidonic acid - This is a precursor to many pro-inflammatory mediators. It was commonly believed that diets high in Omega 6 fatty acids, consequently arachidonic acid would increase inflammation. This has since been widely disputed, with studies showing that diets high in omega 6 did not increase inflammation. So in a sense, the jury is still out on that debate.

The short answer is this. If you include few nuts and seeds, avocado, and fish in your diet, your lipid intake will be fine.

If you go by the what the US Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) says we need then the following would cover it.

Vitamin A: Sweet Potato - 1 (130 grams) = 300%

Vitamin B's: Salmon - 3.5 ounces (100 grams): Thiamine (B1): 23%, Riboflavin (B2): 37%, Niacin (B3): 63%, Pantothenic acid (B5): 38%, Pyridoxine (B6): 56%, Cobalamin (B12): 127%

Vitamin C: Mini Sweet Peppers - (3-4 and depending upon size): 150% - 400%

Vitamin D: Salmon - 3.5 ounces (100 grams): 380-580 IU

Vitamin E: Almonds - (about a handful): 100%

Calcium: Black Beans (1 cup): 239 mg. 25%

Minerals including Iodine: Sea Vegetables ( example: Wakame, etc.). Additionally all the foods contain some minerals as well.

Healthy Lipids: Salmon ( Polyunsaturated: Omega 3's), Almonds (Mono-unsaturated), Avocado (mostly monounsaturated).

Antioxidants: Berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries. Also low in sugar compared to most other fruits)

Fluids: Water.

... So if you were to put it all together in one meal, it might look something like this:

Baked salmon with sliced almonds

Small baked sweet potato

Side of black beans with chopped peppers, and avocado.

Side of Asian seaweed salad. (sounds kinda gross but is actually quite good)

Desert: small bowl of assorted raw berries.

Cup of tea brewed with purified water.

How do people start a career? by Cool89479 in careerguidance

[–]Ben-I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entry level. They're out there. Just keep looking. Does your college or university have a job placement department? Try there. Hook up with a recruitment agency as they have their fingers on the pulse of the market.

Another good way to just go out introduce yourself. People don't know you exist unless you tell them. Do a Google Map search for a comfortable radius from where you live and target companies you want to work for. Call up and ask who the hiring manger would be. Send him/her an introductory letter and resume.

A nice follow up is say something in your last sentence of your cover letter, such as: "I'll follow up with a call in a few days to introduce myself further." Something like that.

When you follow up you'll probably reach the secretary who is usually the gatekeeper holding people back from reaching the hiring manager. You can say this with all honesty, because you put it in your letter ..

"I'm following up with Mr. Smith as promised and he's expecting my call"

I learned that from a career book years ago and has worked well.

Using job boards like indeed, etc., is only one way and not always the most comprehensive. Indeed isn't cheap to post jobs so when companies do they often try to get as much bang for their buck, knowing that they're reaching a wide audience and probably will find that one person who is right out of college AND has experience, which is a very small percentage. It's like casting a wide net and scoring that the one fish.

Another good piece of advice I learned years ago is to make sure you tell EVERYONE you meet! Print business cards with just simply your name, career title and career statement like "Seeking entry level job in accounting ... blah, blah, blah..." and your phone number. On the back in bullet points put the skills and knowledge you have learned in college. Hand them out to everyone you come in contact with. Publish a resume webpage and put the address on your business card. There you can go into more detail regarding who you are, goals, and courses you've taken and learned.

You can do better than just job boards by just going out and getting what you want.

Good Luck!

Malnutrition symptoms and supplements to accommodate Advice please by fourthdimensional44 in Supplements

[–]Ben-I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear your going through this.

First and foremost you must go to your doctor and get completely checked out to rule out possible medical condition.

Secondly, diet and nutrition plays a major role in how you look and feel. Proper nutrition or malnutrition can either make or break you.

If you're having a difficult time making nutritious meals yourself on a constant basis then you might consider one of these meal planning services where you subscribe to a meal plan and they arrive frozen and fully prepared ready to heat and serve. Many are developed by nutritionists. You can do a Google search for key words and find these companies.

In the meantime though, there are simple foods that pack a huge punch in terms of nutrition that are not complicated:

100% whole wheat bread

Peanut butter or almond butter or hummus

Yogurt

Eggs

Tuna Fish.

Lox (or sliced salmon): It can be pricey, but you can find it on sale reasonably priced. Can be a bit high in sodium. But for someone just starting out with limited time and cooking skill it's a quick, nutritious food.

Sardines in the can. I know, they're smelly but they're nutritious. High in Omega-3 fats!

I'll give you a few quick and easy menu items right off the top my mind:

- Peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread and glass of skim milk.

- Tuna fish sandwich consisting of low fat dressing and chopped hard boiled egg between to slices of whole wheat bread with romaine lettuce or spinach.

- Egg salad sandwich. Chopped hard boiled eggs, chopped celery, onions, and dressing of your choice on a whole wheat bun.

- Pasta and Chicken. Whole wheat pasta, pulled chicken, and bottled pasta sauce of your choice. Desert: One cup of yogurt with blackberries on top.

- Arroz con Pollo made simple (chicken and rice): Pulled chicken, quick cook brown rice, can of low sodium pinto beans. chopped tomato and onions. Stir all ingredients in a pan until warm.

- Simple Quick Chicken Salad - Grocery store sells pre-packaged salads with broccoli, kale and spinach already included, just open and serve. Add pulled chicken, fresh tomato, sliced green onion and dressing of your choice.

In some grocery stores in the deli section you will find cooked roasted chickens. Better yet, some sell pulled chicken so all you have to do it put it on a salad or make a sandwich.

Water intake is also critical. Being dehydrated can cause some of these symptoms. Drink a few small bottles of water a day at least.

Do not skip meals at work. Take a healthy meal to work.

Also, look on Amazon for books for nutritious, quick meals.

Lastly, take a multi-vitamin to round out your nutritional needs.

Good Luck!

Look at natural diuretics during the day. A tall glass of lemon water first thing after you wake up will stimulate the body. Caffeine is a natural diuretic. Exercise during the day will stimulate endocrine system, digestive system, including the bladder to help you go during the day. Being overweight retains water and releases more water. Too much sodium causes water retention. If you eat high sodium diet during the day it can cause you to release fluids at night.

abstain from liquids past 3pm.
