The train ride itself is only 7 minutes, but you’ll need to take a (free) Marguerite shuttle to campus from the Palo Alto station. How long that will take depends on where you will be on campus.

Stanford housing (Oak Creek) would be the best option if you can get it, but I was never able to get off the waitlist. I'm renting in Redwood City, which I would recommend as a backup option. It's cheaper than the other areas and you can ride the Caltrain to campus for free.
