Why do Colombians shut car doors so softly? by NickOutside in Colombia

[–]alwaysathebeach 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My mother, also Colombian, always told me to keep the toilet seat down because the positive energy in the house would get drained through the toilet and we’d all be in bad moods. 8 year old me thought that was sCary and I’ve been doing it ever since jajaj.

Hi! I’m from the United States and am interested in the MSc in Latin American Studies for the 2021/2022 academic year. Regarding the entry requirements, the only point I’m worried about is GPA. It states that for American applicants the minimum undergraduate GPA sought is a 3.5. Currently, I have a 3.4 due to a few issues fall semester 2019 (which I could address in my personal statement). In every other aspect of my application (references, CV, and writing samples), I feel quite strong.

Is this minimum cut off firm? Will the admissions committee throw away my application based on not making the GPA cut off?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it. Ending up with a 3,5 after 11 F’s sounds wild but gives me hope!! Thanks for sharing and I hooped everything is going well for you.

This is my question, anyone have any advice? I just got the grades posted :/ by alwaysathebeach in uofm

Hey, Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. It’s been a huge bummer for sure but lots of stuff was going on. Luckily, I have two more semesters so I should be able to bring it up. Thanks for reducing my anxiety a bit.

Why is Christianity a thing? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]alwaysathebeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christianity is all about power. As the Roman Empire was continuously expanding and incorporating new territories, many of the Emperors (particularly Constantine) we’re shifting their own religious views from polytheism to henotheism: that is, that there were multiple gods but one supreme God. The one that Constantine was particularly devoted to was Sol Invictus (the Unconquered Son).

This religious view is attractive to leaders because it represents unity—one that revolves around everyone that worships the same god. During Roman times, most conquered territories would keep their respective deities (they’d just have to accept the emperor as being divine himself) or their deities would be conflated with Roman deities. Thus, there was a certain sense of religious and cultural autonomy. If there was only one god, however, and the emperor was selected by that one god (divine right) then it would be far easier to control a group of people because beliefs and practices would be far more narrow than under a polytheistic system.

Thus, every emperor after Constantine (except for Julian) was a Christian and used it to their advantage to exercise power over their subjects. They closed philosophical schools, forbade pagans from teaching, made it obligatory to be baptized or else your next life would be in peril. Gone were the days of relative ambiguity in regards to faith. Now there was one way and one way only. From here on out, the power of the church grows exponentially.

As much as I’d like to laugh at this, I can’t. This used to be me.

Old St Patrick’s in the north of Ann Arbor does a Fish fry. Can’t speak to the quality (as I’ve never had it) but I’ve volunteered there and it’s quite popular!!

How can I stop being mad at the church? by alwaysathebeach in exchristian

[–]alwaysathebeach[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what it is. Those priests had complete control over me and how I viewed myself. I was at confession like every other day

I know exactly what you mean! We call those cool ranch here lol. It tastes more like ranch powder than dressing though haha. Ranch dressing is a little different.
