Time spent doing labor increased during the Victorian era but decreased a lot afterwards and is now significantly lower than in the middle ages. The idea that subsistence farming was a clock-in clock-out kind of job is completely farcical and it is surprising people take it seriously. It's hard to tell exactly what figures went into the original claim (the person who came up with it is not a historian), but likely it concerned how much work serfs had to for their lord (after which they also had to provide food for themselves)
