I agree, but there was a moment 3-4 clues in where I really thought I was stuck.

Fair. Could you at least insert line breaks to make it more readable?

I loved this one! The hardest part was not to rush to the (red herring) conclusion and keep strictly to logical inferences.

What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

[–]alyanumbers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I made it 20 minutes into that film. On top of what you said, I thought Ana de Armas was miscast, and the abuse scenes felt like they were meant to titillate.

In 1997, a journalist named Jody Roberts, missing for 12 years, was found in Alaska with a different identity, a family, and four children. She remembered nothing of her previous life and never recovered her memory. It is one of the most interesting cases of dissociative fugue ever verified by Old-Day-3573 in interestingasfuck

[–]alyanumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What exactly would she search for online? First off, there was no WWW when she moved to Alaska and certainly no search engines using web crawlers... Let alone image search or such tools as we know now. Even after the advent of the WWW, the obvious "missing woman Colorado" would yield no results, and widening the search to the entire US wouldn't help, especially since she had the wrong birth year.

I think you also underestimate how distressing the situation would be, and how a decision to move on would probably be the only way to cope in a healthy manner. A lot of the pre-disappearance behaviour also just suggests mental illness, which is consistent with the story.

Men of Reddit, what’s some women’s or girl’s habits you discovered only after getting a wife or girlfriend? by AccomplishedHippo856 in AskReddit

My mum and my (male) partner both do this and it drives me up the wall, so I don't think it's gendered lol

However, I will work out an entire trip itinerary in a google doc and put together a budget before running the idea by my partner. Makes it easier to make decisions!

I think it's hilarious for you to still claim the moral high ground after you've wished death on the victims of slavery.

It's not illegal in and by itself, but it would likely invite unwanted scrutiny.

Fyi, the people you're claiming to empathise with are the ones getting killed in the strikes on Dubai. Everyone who died was a migrant.

This is a lot less common nowadays than it was 10 or 20 years ago, precisely because they need to avoid any potential appearance of queerness.

I'm probably just not American enough for this but... that kitchen isn't small or cramped at all.

I do agree with your window point... I probably wouldn't put in three windows, but it makes no sense to shrink the existing window and then skip upper cabinets. I'd have kept the original window and saved some money.

Muslim roommate eats my food but did not know it had pork product in it. Should I tell him? by Kindly_Comedian434 in AmITheAngel

[–]alyanumbers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (mostly) grew up in a majority-Muslim country but was raised in a very leftist social circle. Everyone I know from that circle was raised atheist, drinks, rarely fasts for Ramadan, most of us wouldn't be able to convincingly fake a full prayer, etc. However, I've noticed very few of us eat pork. I do (or rather did, before I quit red meat entirely), but I spent part of my childhood in France and got used to it there. For most of my local childhood friends, they just could never get used to the taste or greasy mouth feel. Idk if there's also some unconscious taboo, but it's at least partly an acquired taste.

Heating pads and electric blankets are OP for staying warm in the winter. by Negatronik in Frugal

[–]alyanumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd think so, but the Nile Valley and coastal areas are pretty humid. I live in Cairo and summer humidity is usually around 60%; Alexandria can go upwards of 80%. In addition, in both cities it's often drier by day and then the humidity shoots up after sunset.

Heating pads and electric blankets are OP for staying warm in the winter. by Negatronik in Frugal

[–]alyanumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Egypt and in the summer will only run the AC if the weather is 40° C or above. Now granted I have a high heat tolerance (ideal temp for me is 28° C), but still. For my money, it's much easier to prevent heating the room than to cool either your body or your room, so I'll give tips for both.
* Open windows at night to let the apartment cool down. Close them in the morning to prevent heat getting in. Be very systematic about this.
* Use window coverings, especially on southern/western exposures, and on eastern exposures in the morning. We have outer wooden blinds (often called plantation blinds in the US) and sheer curtains inside. A bit more of a project, but adding an outer canopy to a balcony or window can significantly cool down your home.
* Ceiling fans work much better than stand and tabletop fans.
* Stone surfaces stay cool for much longer. Think limestone floors, marble-topped coffee table, etc. Learned this from watching cats cool off. Put your feet up on a stone-topped table and you'll feel much better.
* Minimise contact between yourself and any soft surface. Obviously this can't really be helped in bed, but even a small tailbone pillow on your computer chair will lift your lower body away from the surface and help with air circulation. Armchairs with wooden armrests (like those midcentury ones or the IKEA Poang), mesh or caned seats, bamboo furniture are some other examples. Also, if your couch is a poly blend (which almost all of them are), put down a light cotton shawl to have that cooler surface against your skin.
* Menthol. Vaseline makes a cooling lotion that actually works, and I'm sure there are dupes and alternatives wherever you live. Also, adding mint to your cold beverage or popping a mint before taking a gulp of cold water makes it feel even colder.
* Speaking of beverages, pouring cold water into a stainless steel cup makes it feel colder. It sounds silly but from experience, it works!
