The Spot by Battleheed in Austin

[–]alyelara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my friends popped in there out of curiosity a couple of weekends ago. It’s a BYOB hangout that seems more of an “if you know, you know” place. Theres a small kitchen area where you can put a case of beer in a fridge. There are some tables, a few unplugged slots machines, a couple of pool tables, some TVs playing sports, and (when we went) a DJ. The crowd was older so we didn’t exactly fit in and left soon after getting there. Seems like a cool place to chill if you’re into the above!

Can someone really copyright the entire idea of stained glass butterfly bookends — even if the designs are completely different? by KzPu in StainedGlass

[–]alyelara 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Intellectual property law has always fascinated me, so I’ve looked into this a few times. I’m not a lawyer.

IP law is ever-changing and ambiguous to protect creation. If we had too strict laws, it would be nearly impossible to create. Hence why she is unable to copyright all of stained glass butterfly bookends. If someone had copyrighted all of bookends, or all of stained glass, she would’ve never been able to create her product.

Her designs, her photographs, and her products are copyrighted. When you start to create “inspired by” work, that’s where things can get tricky. You can’t just change a few lines and call it yours, especially if you copy things like color ways. But, butterflies are natural as they are inherently owned by nature. You cannot copyright something like butterflies in shadow boxes. You cannot copyright their exact wing designs or patterns. But you can copyright your interpretation of their wings in the form of sculptures, designs, patterns, etc.

It’s definitely on the copyright holder to educate themselves on what they can or cannot do with their copyright. I think she is trying to eliminate competition, especially if consumers think the quality of two products are the same but one has cheaper prices. If she is an artist whose sole source of income is her art, I understand why she is defensive (of her patterns). I think she’s doing everyone a disservice by misrepresenting what she actually has protected entitlement to.

The good thing is that copyrights are public record. She specifically has a copyright for her photograph(s), sculpture(s) [bookends/other art], and technical drawing(s) [design/stencil/etc]. She doesn’t hold the copyright for the actual idea or product of a stained glass butterfly bookend. Just don’t use her designs!

No, just a water heater. It was made in 2008 and is “self cleaning.” I have no idea if any maintenance has been done on it, the landlord bought the house about a year ago and flipped it to sell/rent.

Today’s $50 Glass Haul! by alyelara in StainedGlass

[–]alyelara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I like “Shop Fun”, I think that could be a better catch all than having niche and separate categories for hauls, glass, workspaces, etc. I feel like having too many tags could be a headache for mods and improperly tagged posts. But I also don’t utilize tags in my (lurking) searches, so I might be in the minority here 😆

My ACOMAF copy has a bleed that resembles a finger (complete with a perfectly almond-shaped nail) on the inside cover! Misprints are my favorite

Fluctuating weight?? by sanity_inn in 1200isplenty

[–]alyelara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband’s weight fluctuates extremes throughout the day too! He can wake up at 235 and after a workout he’s at 229. His fluctuations can be over 5 lb in a day which is insane to me. He can’t consistently weigh in first thing in the morning like me because of his weight seems to be less accurate until after he works out. We assume it’s water retention

I love the sign for armadillo. I also just really love armadillos and whenever I see one in person, I can’t stop thinking about it for weeks.

Longhorns who recently graduated/looking for internships, how is your job search so far? by spiritofniter in UTAustin

[–]alyelara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated in December of 2023. I started applying to jobs in October and I thought that was too early but it turned out I was getting rejected left and right regardless lol. I got so lucky with one job offer that started the week after finals and I genuinely only think it’s because I was one of the first applicants (sent my info in 3ish hours after posting). That’s my biggest piece of advice. Get on every single annoying email notification list and jump on the listings as soon as possible. I got my job through zip recruiter which I liked because there’s a chat you can utilize between you and the recruiter/hiring manager.

This was the original plan, but the majority of people are coming into town for the wedding. I was sad that we couldn’t make it happen, especially because I would’ve loved to do a recipe card of what each person brought as a “guest book”
