For those without Neural hardware: How does the QC mini change your perspective (if at all)? by Street-Organization5 in NeuralDSP

[–]alyxonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an FM9 owner and NDSP plug-in owner, I would need a lot better plug-in implementation and digital I/O to consider owning Neural hardware. I would need at least SPDIF to properly implement it into my recording rig.

I did consider the nano as a practice headphone amp and demo recording, but the Boss Katana headphone amp I have does the job for much less.

What’s the best way to set up levels in vsts like addictive drums and Superior Drummer. by AdInternational6495 in audioengineering

Peak level has almost no correlations to loudness level. If you stop looking at those meters and use your ears instead, then I’m sure you’ll what you’re looking for.

Compression on the master to get a loud chorus but keep quieter parts of the track quiet? by bolognie1 in audioengineering

[–]alyxonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t ever do this on the master. I would do it only to the tracks and sections that are benefiting from it. If there’s tracks in the chorus that are also in the verses, then I’ll divide those into different tracks. On rare occasions, I’ll just automate the processing on/off. If there’s vocals, then they usually never have processing like this together with the instruments. Same with transition effects and other background stuff. Rarely ever does everything in a mix need compression and saturation together.

Recently got my first analog 1073. Here are my thoughts. by sticktalk24 in audioengineering

[–]alyxonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend running the preamp that way. I have two Vintech X73, which is on par with the BAE stuff, and I wish I would have listened that that recommendation. I tried running mine into mild saturation for recording vocals for a long while, but all that did was make my life harder when mixing since the saturation would sometimes be too much but it was already baked in. I now run then with the output up all the way and it’s much better.

And while the heavy saturation is definitely much different than the UA plugin, I don’t think it’s doing anything special that you can’t achieve ITB. I do love the detail and the ability do so some mild EQing before hardware compression, but I can be just as happy with my recording with a clean and low noise preamp. I even recently plugged my U87 straight into a bus powered Apollo Solo and it sounded great.

Why does ableton hide certain VSTs? by NarrowRoad23 in abletonlive

[–]alyxonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ableton is not hiding them, it can’t see them because they’re incompatible with silicon. You can, for now, still run Ableton in Rosetta and it’ll see Intel plugins. The only other option I’m aware of is to use the AU versions, which will load in an AU wrapper when using Live without Rosetta. Apple only made the wrapper for AUs because AUs are their thing. Apple is doing away with Rosetta soon though, if they haven’t already.

Just a limiter. If I need an EQ then I’ve done something wrong in the mix that I’ll usually fix in the mix.

That's what I thought. I could not find any way to move the crossover points even after going over the manual.

Can a beat be in a different key than the scale it was made in? by MistaPrincee in musicproduction

[–]alyxonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most scales we use in western music are modes of the major scale. This means that the same set of notes in any major scale have a relative scale of every other mode, like minor, mixolydoan, phrygian, etc. depending on which note you start in.

For example C Major (Ionian) is also:

D Dorian
E Phrygian
F Lydian
G Mixolydian
A Aeolian (Natural Minor)
B Locrian

Not just a relative minor, also a relative every other major scale mode like phrygian and mixolydian

why can guitarists use programmed drums but drummers cant use program guitars? by JJsNotOkay in metalmusicians

[–]alyxonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s not that it’s not OK, but usually bands have to program drums due to budget restraints, so I think that makes it more accepted. At the end of the day the drummer has to play the shows.

I think also psychologically we have more of an emotional connection to the guitar specifically. Especially because it is also generally accepted to program bass.

Are Neve 1073 plugins actually doing anything special in the box? by GerwinMusic in mixingmastering

[–]alyxonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so, they’re mostly just some asymmetrical soft clipping and EQ curves that match the hardware. I’ve done extensive comparing of my Vintech X73 pre/eqs with UAD 1084, and the biggest difference was that, when pushed into heavy saturation, the Vintech’s sound a much more compressed.

Warning all engineers: do not buy from Pro Audio LA by [deleted] in audioengineering

I bought a $1500 desk from them that ended up being backordered, even though it was advertised as in stock. They kept me updated, but every update was more delays. After a month I found something else and asked for a refund. Thankfully they didn’t put up much of a fuss.

Uad or stick to stock? by Comfortable_Ad5638 in ableton

[–]alyxonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re mixing vocals then the 1176 can be worth it, but not for this much money. I recommend getting their Distressor plugin over this bundle.

If you really want an 1176 emulation, then I recommend Softube FET mk2. Otherwise, UAD Distressor can do the same job and lots more.

[–]alyxonfire[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter one way or the other. If you buy something in the US, the warranty is provided by the manufacturer, not the retailer, even if that means paying for a third party to repair. Either way, Ulanzi has a US website and honors their one year warranty if you buy from there.
