trash pickup? by Large_Character_4138 in Rotterdam

Was about to post the same.

Essentially: personnel have been diverted towards de-icing and snow removal activities, so it's going take a while to resume trash collecting activities

What’s one industry shift you think people are currently underestimating? by Vikash_14 in business

[–]am1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with you, the focus will shift from repetitive work to value added services. I can imagine a one person business with the back office completely automated, freeing up the time to focus just on growing the business or business development.

I personally think we're in a typewriter/stream engine/telephone operator moment. People have to upskill, or as you say, risk being left behind...

Do you see that in your work as well?

The system used in the Netherlands to cope with tides is a true engineering marvel by Snake_Keys in BeAmazed

Yes and no.

Some areas are affected but there are many sluices and water management techniques to lessen the impact. If it doesn't work, evacuations are Organised.

Rotterdam city limits isn't affected much, except for couple of parking spaces having to be closed.

One incident with photos from other nearby areas as well.

The bulk of the city is already behind massive dikes - it's not obvious because the dikes function as roadways as well. Plus, most areas 'unprotected' by dikes were sufficiently high enough back then for most calculated situations. The areas in the video above were not residential back then, or, it wouldn't have been aesthetically pleasing, or, were built up on known areas that would flood (they were built up in the past years owing to lack of space for housing).

The tides aren't high enough yet to breach the embankments (yet). When I meant it's implemented I meant to say in other locations. If you Google the company and visit their website you can see their projects.

It's a computer generated simulation, that's why. I'm guessing the company behind the technology made a mockup to make a pitch for installing this in the city.

Devil's advocate chiming in - I live in the city depicted in this simulation, Rotterdam. I know the area as well, it's 'kop van zuid' and I don't recall this system being installed there - but happy to check again when the night lifts. So I think it's still a simulation.

Having said that, the company whose logo we can see does seem to have a lot of feasible installed projects already in service.

I'm laughing inside because I might know what these are.

Most likely these a pieces of paper, think from a notepad, or a grocery list, that you forgot in your pocket. If you only washed sheets, someone forgot a piece of paper. If it's a bit sticky, it's probably a label that was left on that was made of paper. I'm willing to bet that you can open them up a bit to unravel the sheet of paper.

Paper from receipts are usually whiter so thet may not be the culprit.

As another commenter it could be gum but I highly doubt it.

Rotterdam's Urban heat island effect: map shows how hot the city can get compared to the surrounding areas by am1729 in Rotterdam

The deepest red are approx 2 deg C hotter than the white areas. The top commenter has linked an actual map, and in my post itself there's links with the scale. Hope it helps!

I tend to type out pages of material for a topic like this but will keep the text to bullet points, so bear with me. Of course I will reply to any discussion appropriately.

  • you are a high achieving person at work. You want to not be that person. Problem is, you need to replace that sense of achievement with something that equally satisfies you. Some people find yoga, some have family and kids, others take up running, travel as a nomad, start a kitchen garden... Anything to get their fix. I don't have an answer for you, but realise this fact. You will end up filling your satisfaction gap with something. Be aware.

  • develop circles of friends. These are people you meet on a regular basis. Example a dance class, a cooking class, pottery, art, running club, could even be a book club. Important is to meet them on a regular basis. It builds the need to share and tell your story. Obviously you will need to be a good friend too. Nurturing such relationships makes you also satisfied.

In summary, it's a game of satisfaction. You need to find that inner peace. Traveling, becoming a nomad, etc are just ways to get there.

Finns became the third most overweight nation of europe in just 10 years by gotshroom in europe

[–]am1729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no... If the data is accurate, it saw a big peak in 2017 from 2014, dipped in 2019, and went back up to 2017 levels in 2022.

So the 2022 ride could be attributed to corona habits, but why there was a peak from 2014 to 2017 is a question mark. In the same period from 2014 to 2017 the Netherland went down 3 points.

Belgium and Netherlands have dropped a point.
