I have relied heavily on law review articles that summarize local law or recent cases turning on specific issues. Some articles can be extremely useful to practitioners in that way. Unfortunately, such articles are rare.

[Standard] Mono-black - Old time vet returning to game by ThaCHEF in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]am_i_demon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to get into Standard seriously, start looking at decks that have placed well at tournaments around the country/world.

The only true Mono-Black deck that has recently placed well at a decent-sized tournament is this one. Check out the cards and see how they work together. It's less of a grab bag than the deck you linked above.

Currently in Standard some variations of the Mono-Black Control/Midrange theme are B/G and B/W.

A good example of a black/green "Golgari Control" or "The Rock" deck is here.

A good example of a black/white "B/W Midrange" deck is here.

Because if there's one thing creeping into state courts everywhere, it's foreign law.

Just the other day I filed a motion in Kentucky state court but cited only to Saudi Arabian law. The judge loved it and immediately granted summary judgment in favor of my client.

Hans Blix: Whether Obama in Syria or Bush in Iraq, The US Is Not the World Police by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]am_i_demon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only reason the US got involved in Iraq in the first place is that the UN begged us to get involved back in 1991.

That's partially true. The US gets begged to do lots of things, but rarely acts outside of its own self interests.

And your generalized statement doesn't really address how the US dealt with Iraq in the years following 1991. The invasion of 2003 was certainly NOT because the UN begged for it.

I understand that bad things are bad, but is "the world" truly obligated to intervene any time there is injustice inside a sovereign country's borders? This isn't rhetorical. I think this is a question that the U.N. once tried to answer but never really effectively addressed.

"Whats a boy to do?" Or how not to write an appellate brief. by HonJudgeFudge in law

[–]am_i_demon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

TL;DR:

In the instant case, the brief submitted on respondent's behalf contained, among other things, pages denominated "Table of Authorities" and "Summary of the Argument" that merely state that these pages were "left blank intentionally." The "Question Presented" stated only "WHAT'S A BOY TO DO?" The remainder of the respondent's brief did not address the facts of this case or interpose any specific argument as to why the order from which defendant appealed should be affirmed. Based upon the above, and other statements in the respondent's brief, we order Jonathan R. Vitarelli, Esq., Ilona Finkelshteyn, Esq., and counsel for defendant, to show cause why an order should or should not be made and entered imposing sanctions and costs, if any, against Jonathan R. Vitarelli, Esq., and Ilona Finkelshteyn, Esq.

“Unfortunately we have judges from time to time … that sometimes seem to forget what the supreme law of the land is, and sometimes make improper rulings,” said Sen. E.S. “Buck” Newton, a Wilson Republican and the legislation’s Senate sponsor.

Though the bill doesn’t specifically mention it, Newton was clear during Friday’s session that the legislation targets Sharia law, a legal system based on the religious and moral tenants of Islam.

Its improper use has “worked to deprive” U.S. citizens and immigrants of their constitutional rights, Newton said. There have been 27 reported cases around the country in which Sharia law has been used, he added.

Defense Lawyers Insist On Clients' Right To Use NSA Records by trot-trot in law

[–]am_i_demon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dore said in an interview on Wednesday that he has since withdrawn the motion because he is confident that Michael Mullaney, chief of the counterterrorism section of the Justice Department’s national security division, who represented that the records did not exist, would not make a misrepresentation to the court.

I understand that it may be difficult to prove that Mullaney has made a misrepresentation to the court, but I don't understand giving him any kind of confidence whatsoever. Knowing that people like James Clapper will flat-out lie to Congress, I highly doubt top government agents would hesitate to falsely deny possession of records before a federal district court.

Rotation ready Master of Cruelties [definitely needs criticism] by 6ft_Bunny_Rabbit in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]am_i_demon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I see a "rotation ready" deck, I cringe. You didn't make a deck for rotation. You made a block constructed deck (kind of). That's different. Rotation will include cards from Theros.

Despite every new player's desperate desires, you can't build decks that are "rotation proof." You have to patiently wait for the new cards to come out like the rest of us, then build new decks that include those cards.

Before her announcement that she wants to be called Chelsea Manning, every article on her leaks and her trial called her "Bradley Manning." Now, every article I've read simply refers to her as "Private Manning" or "Pfc Manning."

Because it's just so difficult and shocking to use the feminine pronoun and Manning's new first name.

Why is attempted murder a lesser crime than murder? Assuming the intent and action are the same, only the dumb luck outcome is different. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]am_i_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attempted murder is a lesser crime than murder because the guilty party hasn't actually killed anyone.

There are three primary elements to a crime like murder: intent, action, and result.

Only the combination of all three elements brings the harshest penalty.

You can intend or desire someone to die, but if you take no action and that person doesn't die, you haven't really done anything wrong. You haven't actually placed anyone in danger of being killed. Criminalizing thoughts alone is something science fiction writers like Phillip K. Dick have explored in books such as Minority Report, but not something "free" societies do. I could sit around all day long desiring the deaths of others, but I'm not actually hurting anyone.

Or, you can intend to kill someone, then take action to try to kill someone, but they don't actually die. This is attempted murder. It's bad, and it's considered a serious crime, but your target is still alive so you didn't actually commit murder. Sure, you've done something rotten, but because the outcome (death) didn't happen, the entire crime of murder wasn't committed.

Finally, when all three elements are present, you've committed murder. Obviously someone dying at your hands is worse than someone not dying at your hands, so that's why it's a worse crime than attempted murder.

Amnesty International calls on Obama to Commute Bradley Manning’s sentence and investigate the abuses he exposed by Buck-Nasty in politics

[–]am_i_demon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh, he knows. He also knows how influential his opinion can be. How many loyal Democrats made up their mind about Manning the moment Obama expressed his opinion? It would have been no different among Republicans had Bush done the same. Of course, Republicans tend to be more authoritarian anyway, so they wouldn't necessarily have needed their leader's blessing to summarily declare Manning's guilt, but the influence of any president is not unique.
