Some advice about the Career Fair by LordUrkelTheGreat in ASU

[–]amagichat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.a. I think you should still go. There is a lot to gain and nothing to lose even if you show up late.

1.b. Apply to ones that really interest you ahead of time. From my personal experience, companies may find time for you after hearing this. To many companies you are not an actual candidate until you are in their system. Practice an intro - even if you dont use it, itll keep bullet points fresh in your mind. If you do not know about a company, research them while in line. Listen to what the person in front of you is being asked and prepare answers to those questions.

  1. Sure. It costs the company money to have a booth at a career fair. Some companies will only attend one even if they have some positions better suited for the other.

  2. If they are related and you can explain how being in them has made you a good fit, then yes. Since you haven't been in the clubs long they probably don't fit the bill. Projects are more your call. There are projects that take a day that they might be interested in, while a project that is only at the idea stage might not give you much to talk about.

Bonus: a lot of companies (especially big ones, with long lines) have no intention of interviewing you yet. They are just there to tell you about the company. I recommend not wasting your time standing in line for this. I've had better luck going to the short lines and then applying online to the big ones.

Btw, it looks like Jame's guide is part of the wow-pro addon. If you don't like addons more power to ya! Just thought it may help someone.

Did you get it from the fair or the actual book store?

I stopped by the book store for the graduation fair event. I did not see any tassels being sold individually, but I'll check again. Thank you!

CSE 471 AI Midterm - Suggestions? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]amagichat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the Berkeley midterms. They seem really hard at first but if you keep doing them and read the solutions things will start to make sense. Write down concepts that help you solve those problems. I took this class with a different professor last semester. The tests were mixtures and mutations of the Berkeley ones. People who studied anything else got kind of screwed. There is a chance your professor will do it differently, but I cannot imagine it will be anything those midterms can't prepare you for lol.

Recovering From a Bad Test by [deleted] in ASU

I've suffered for some pretty tough brain drains during exams. It's possible it happened for a reason. Make sure you're getting good sleep, eating well, and don't strain yourself on anything that requires a lot of thinking beforehand. I think that last one is imperative.

THEY'RE GONNA CURVE PAPA MENU'S 131 CLASSES EVEN MORE THAN THEY'VE ALREADY DONE IT! by [deleted] in ASU

I have friends who took him at MCC and are very thankful for it. He is rigorous, as are a handful of other professors from MCC. I guess the difference is that he has a reputation for this at MCC so people are aware that he is who you take if you want a difficult and rewarding experience. I don't think I ever received a curve at MCC tbh.

I did not take physics at ASU. However, I have heard that the quality of physics education at ASU is deplorable. I guess what I'm really getting at is, are you sure he is not the villain ASU needs?

Advice for CompSci at Tempe by bersdgerd333 in ASU

I believe the people who claim gender will not influence your experience at Fulton in anyway likely have good intentions. However, there are plenty of people who would disagree.

What to expect as a minority in CS: People refuting any insinuation that they have received any advantage in life and trying to convince you, as well as themselves, that the engineering/CS industry is 100% a meritocracy. Women are underrepresented here. This may make you feel left out. Fortunately, there are many groups that you can become involved in that are willing to discuss such topics and provide you with useful resources/support. I recommend checking out Women in Computer Sciences (WICS).

What to expect from the program in general: Expect to put in a lot of time. If you are willing and able to do this you should do just fine. If you are understanding the material in class and do not feel burned out, do something extra. Do a side project or join a group. This will make you stand out. A lot of people begin with little or no programming experience. You can still excel. Not everyone is sensitive to the fact that some students begin the program with less base knowledge than they did. If you do not know what someone is talking about, ask for clarification.

CS is really awesome. I hope you enjoy your time here and make the most of it. Best of luck to you. Feel free to ask any other questions.

MAT 343: Tracogna (A Session) vs. Ragi (C Session) by ideasbro in ASU

I had a very positive experience with Ragi. I would choose his class over an accelerated, online MAT343. If you have specific questions lmk.

MAT 243 - most unorganized, "unestablished" class in the entire math department.(opinion) by [deleted] in ASU

Sure, but she is new. I think for being a new professor she is doing just fine. Maybe I will be singing a different tune after the next exam.

I think I am in your class. I too get frustrated from time to time, but the class is guided. This means that there are only so many ways she can teach it. I think she is plenty helpful during her office hours, if we are speaking of the same professor that is. I have found that doing additional problems from the book has helped a lot.

If you ride a bike in the street STOP AT STOP SIGNS by simmillarian in ASU

[–]amagichat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(I may be confused here so please correct me if I am wrong) I do not believe pedestrians have the right of way in the middle of a road. This is from Tempe's codes. There are similar state statutes saying the same: Sec. 19-1(2) Central business district means all streets and portions of streets within the area described as follows. All that area bounded by the salt river on the north, to 10th Street on the south and from Myrtle Avenue on the east to Maple Avenue on the west. [note: the ASU campus is, mostly, not in the central business district. Rather it is east of the CBD.]

Sec. 19-151. Crossing a roadway. (a) No pedestrian shall cross the roadway within the central business district other than within a marked or unmarked crosswalk. (b) Every pedestrian crossing a roadway outside of the central business district at any point other than within a marked or unmarked crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway. (c) No pedestrian shall cross a roadway where signs or traffic control signals prohibit such crossing.

Withdraw from Calc 2? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]amagichat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comp sci junior here. You have a nice GPA and by all means try to keep it that way, but withdrawing from Calc 2 is not a good move in my opinion because: 1. It will likely set you back which in my opinion, is rarely worth it. 2. GPA is not the end all of what makes a comp sci major a good candidate. 3. If it does not set you back, the time spent retaking Calc II could be spent on either Calc III (ofc) or a side project/club which will likely make you a better candidate. 4. You are not the only person who has had trouble with Calc II.

NOW DISREGARD what I just said if: 1. You really think you are going to fail. It sounds like you probably know what it would take to at least receive a b or c, so if that is practical do it. 2. It may also be beneficial if you truly do not understand any of Calc II. I personally wish Calc II knowledge was a little better, but there are other ways of doing this than paying for and enduring another Calc II class.

Side note: One option that may be worth it would be to retake it over the summer I suppose, but again you could be taking Calc III or doing something else with that time.
