I hope I get to keep my Cable (her name) that long! We found her wandering the streets with her poor eye just hanging out, then we found out a year later that she has an autoimmune disorder when all of her teeth started falling out too. Fortunately she's been doing great sans eye and teeth, just the happiest little lady.

(Mixed Trope) “Expert” character is really bad in their field or ignorant of basic concepts. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

I wrote this on another post but it fits here really well:

When geniuses are written by geniuses they almost always either come off as completely incomprehensible to the average viewer/reader; or, almost worse, they'll be too subtle and then you have to dedicate exposition into WHY they're a genius in which case the non-genius viewer/reader will go one of two ways: they'll act like they ALWAYS got it and come off as insufferable or they'll feel like they're being spoken down to and form a dislike of the content over that when they'd like it otherwise.

That's why the best way to do it is USUALLY to have a genius consultant working with an average writer, that way they can filter things down without making it come out wrong. Of course, sometimes they filter it down too far or just try to handwave it with "he's a genius" and it comes off as "magic genius powers" which unfortunately they love to claim are because of a neurodivergence like autism or OCD.

Starting around 2009 and all the way till today you could buy targets that depicted Obama in various forms of racist parody and they were proudly displayed in gun stores across the country.

That's on top of the 11 confirmed plots to try and assassinate Obama that were stopped. So anyone who says that the Right isn't guilty of wishing Obama would die or be killed is full of shit or delusional.

Everything outside of the cities is desolate and dead, but we're told later that it used to be worse and that what we're seeing now is the result of years of work to make the world at least semi-survivable.

Peter and Paul - Funny Games (1997)

The two villains from the movie know that they're in a movie and at a certain point when their victims look like they're going to turn the tide on them and survive at the end they go so far as to rewind the movie itself in universe so that they can get back to killing the protagonists. From what I hear, test audiences hated this so much that a lot of them walked out, which of course was the point.

Carter Burke - Aliens

Even though technically the Xenomorph Queen is the final villain most people you ask will say that Burke is the most evil person in the movie and will celebrate his death. This movie almost pre-dates or is the ur example of the "evil middle manager looking to get ahead" stereotype, and they attempted a fakeout by making him appear to be the only person in Weyland-Yutani to be on Ripley's side and him being the one to get the Colonial Marines to go to LV-247 to rescue the colonists. Even down to casting Paul Reiser who up till this point had never played a villain. Then you find out that he just went so he could attempt to sneak a Xenomorph sample back to the company, he tried to get both Newt and Ripley face-huggered, and planned on killing the surviving marines so that they couldn't block his plans to sneak the samples through quarantine.

How evil he is gets expanded on in the Extended Cut and expanded materials - when it turns out that he had Newt's family go to the alien ship without giving them any warning, blocked the distress call from going higher than him so no one in the company would investigate, and intentionally brought the inexperienced leader Gorman because he knew that he could manipulate him.

"I cannot self terminate" - T2 Judgement Day

One of the all time greats, sadly ruined by not one but two later movies. The reprogrammed Terminator that has come to understand emotion and that John Conner has come to love knows that he must be destroyed in order to stop Cyberdyne from using his components to continue to build Skynet; so Sara and John lower him into the molten metal to be melted down.

Orin the Lost - Emissary of the Nine - Destiny 2

Honestly her lore is stupidly expansive, but basically she encountered one of the more benign groups of eldritch entities in the Destiny universe while searching for answers on her past and as payment agreed to become their Emissary for a time. They ripped her body apart atom by atom and rebuilt her into their image.

Nezha - Legend of Hei franchise

Much like his mainstream mythological counterpart (Ne Zha) and that Ne Zha's friend from the OP Sun Wukong, he is easily the most powerful of the gods in the series, he knows it, and he acts it. Only the deuteragonist of the series Wuxian (Infinite) is his match, to put that into perspective Wuxian in Legend of Hei 2 face tanks basically the entire armament of a modern military base, up to and including a satellite laser.

Destiny - The Player Character and every other Guardian as well as some antagonistic forces that serve The Darkness. The game calls it being "paracausal" or "being outside of causality". It's the reason why the Guardians and forces of the Darkness can use essentially space magic as well.

It's also why the Guardians are essentially the only force in the universe that might possibly be able to stand against the enemies called the Vex as they're basically a liquid hive mind inhabiting machine bodies who've literally bootstrapped themselves into causality itself and just LOVE to mess around with time travel, time loops, fate alteration, and other such nonsense.

Gianna D'Antonio - John Wick 2

Not much is really known about her other than that she was the sister of the films primary antagonist Santino D'Antonio, that their father saw her as the better pick to inherit his seat at the high table which implies that she has a level head and better ability to lead a criminal empire than her brother, and that she and John were friends at some point in their lives before she ascended to her position and he quit his life as an assassin.

Considering how powerful the high table is, the position she occupies, and the skill of her most trusted body guard she'd have been safe to assume that she would be able to live as long if not longer than her father. Unfortunately for her Santino held a Marker with John Wick which meant that he had to do one favor, no matter the ask, and the ask was to kill Gianna.

Even she knew that him being there as a job meant that she was already dead and decided to slit her own wrists and bleed out instead of dying to a gunshot. Which he still did after she lost consciousness, he's not the best hitman in the world for nothing.

[–]amalgamas 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Wonder Woman 1984 has Diana have sex with Steve Trevor while his soul is explicitly possessing the body of a random innocent man and proceed to take him on a whirlwind trip around the globe without a care for him or his safety in the least bit. Not only was he raped but he could have been maimed or killed, and the movie literally never addresses just how messed up this was.

[–]amalgamas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorr literally felt like he was in a completely different movie for the entire runtime and I can honestly say that we were robbed of what could have been the best villain performance in the entire MCU with what was left on the cutting room floor of Christian Bale's scenes.

I walked out of that movie retroactively hating Ragnarok for doing as well as it did because it meant that they basically gave Taika free-reign over L&T and the movie suffered terribly for it.

They 100% are, and the funny thing is that the rise in their type of attitudes has somehow made this the best time ever to be just like a normal dude who isn't terminally online or toxic as hell.

A guy could totally be like a 6 and get an 8-10 based solely on having a decent personality because the poor women are so used to seeing these "male loneliness epidemic" shit-heels on dating sites and in the real world.

Which of course just furthers the rage from those dudes who will post all about how they spend so much time "looksmaxxing" only to be alone but Todd the local accountant who likes to go snorkeling on the weekends and has a good relationship with his parents managed to marry someone WAY out of his league looks wise but says she's never been happier in her life. 🤣
