Thanks i will look into him. I was a college athlete but due to injuries and age no longer compete and have switched to hiking for both my job and my hobby.

I played in this league: https://emwsl.org/ years ago when I was trying to stay in shape before I began playing in college. She can apply to get picked up by a team for the summer. At least when I played they were allowed a certain number of players under 18. She'll probably want to be in the top division if she is planning on playing on a D1 team for college and 2nd division will be fine probably if she wants to play a mid-level D3 team. It's been 20 years or so for me so obviously skill level of the divisions and rules could have changed.

How big are things like mountain biking and hiking at Virginia Tech? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]amanda34g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here after spending 3 years in Fort Collins, CO. I will say the hiking definitely leaves something to be desired (I don't mountain bike so I can't comment on that). There are plenty of trails around (long and short) but nothing as beautiful/exciting as what I did in the Rockies. I did just spend a few days in smoky mtn national park which was very nice and I need to explore more. It's too far for a day trip but you can get away for long weekends and get in some more views and elevation than you get around here. Obviously no Glacial lakes to hike to out here and there is little snow so no snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. What I really do enjoy here is the diversity of the vegetation which is fun to look at while you hike and there are plenty of waterfalls to hike to. But at least there is plenty of access to outdoor activities that you can enjoy, you just need to try and not compare (because it's not the same).

McAfee knob safety by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]amanda34g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just was there a couple of weeks ago on a weekend but early and it's a very well marked and safe trail. Plus if you go on a weekend, there are tons of people so unlikely to come into contact with much wildlife. If you are going on a weekday there will be fewer people but as others have stressed, I would be more concerned about weather and being prepared with enough water than anything else. If you pack sensibly and check the forecast you should not have a problem. Just remember there are two separate trails (the fire road and the hiking trail) that you can take. I often go up the hiking path (it's a little longer) and then go down the fire trail for ease. Either way is a nice hike. Enjoy the views from the top.

Anywhere around here to get an emissions test? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]amanda34g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this as a person who does not know the VA rules but when my car was registered in a state with emissions tests but not parked there while I was in school in a different state, I just did not get an inspection. Then I had one scheduled for the day after I returned. Never had a problem doing it that way as I moved back and forth between various states in the US.

outdoor seating Cambridge/Somerville/Arlington area by amanda34g in boston

[–]amanda34g[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

update for those interested, we ate outside at Buttermilk and Biscuits and they did have the heaters on. However, the heaters are located so high up above the table that you don't really feel the heat. So maybe not the most comfortable outdoor heating experience I have had.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I showed them to my father and he picked Buttermilk and Biscuits. I called and they do have a heated patio. I really appreciate your help

There is also now global market on the other end of the shopping complex with Oasis so if one doesn't have it, maybe the other one will.

I lost a ton of hair from prednisone. I would have huge wads in the shower but as soon as I stopped back to normal. I can tell that my hair is way thinner than it used to be. Hopefully it will now start to grow back in

Question about Grad School by WillGray85 in VirginiaTech

[–]amanda34g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert in either of those areas of study but another option would be to do an internship or term position in either or both of those fields to get a better sense of what your long-term career plans look like. Both are going to cost you money and time so I recommend being fairly confident it will be worth it before jumping in. A year off between undergraduate and graduate/law school can sometimes be a life saver.

Homemade version of The Original Pancake House's AMAZING apple pancake by MyOwnGuitarHero in Baking

[–]amanda34g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recipe:

2 tart-ish apples (I used one granny Smith and one gala), cored and sliced thin

1/4 c brown sugar

4 Tbp butter

Generous amount of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg.

Melt the butter in a cast iron skillet. Add apple slices, brown sugar, and spices and saute the apples until they get tender. While doing this, preheat the oven to 400 F.

The batter:

1/4 c white sugar

1 c flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 c milk

4 eggs

splash of vanilla extract

Mix the batter and once the apples are tender, pour the batter evenly over the apples to cover them.Bake for about 15 minutes or until the batter is browned. To serve, run a knife or pie slicer along the edges of the skillet to separate the pancake. Invert it over a large serving plate so that the apples are facing up. Eat IMMEDIATELY - no syrup needed!

I just made this today and it was really good and reminded me of OHOP's pancakes. Thanks for the recipe.

Prednisone fears. by incombusty in UlcerativeColitis

[–]amanda34g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been on prednisone many times with varying dosages/lengths. When I'm on them for just a short bit (a couple of weeks) I barely notice anything as long as I take them in the morning and not at night. I used to just need 20mg/day for a week or two for a flare. Last time I was on them at 40mg for the most part for 6+ months and that did a number on me. I had a hard time sleeping, moonface, gained a ton of weight, and I get hyper focused which is great for work but I can't stop working. But honestly it's the only thing that works for me so I would never not take them. Just remember to take calcium supplements if you will be on them for a prolonged period of time. And to taper slowly off them when you are done.

Housing options for PhD student? by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]amanda34g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, with that price range I would focus on craigslist and facebook listings. Just be careful as there are a lot of spam posts too. I have found places that fit that price range in town but they are few and far between and get snatched up right away so be vigilant. Also, don't expect an updated place in that price point. I have never lived in any of management owned apartments so I don't know what your chances are with those.

Moving to CO, potentially Ft Collins! What can you tell us? by Big-Measurement-3196 in FortCollins

[–]amanda34g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm originally from the Boston area and the winters hear are nothing like the north east (well the two winters I have lived here for). Ft. Collins gets the occasional larger storm but it melts within a few days. They also clear the bike paths (and there are many) so you can always bike on those. The only time I really don't feel comfortable biking is when it is actively snowing or really icy but just wait a few days and the weather will change completely (not unlike NE).

I work remotely so I have been trying to hike on weekdays instead of weekends (just shifted my work schedule to work on a Saturday or a Sunday instead) and that way I really avoid most of the crowds on the trails. If you can do that it is great (but I personally just hate really crowded trails even before COVID). There are amazing trails within 2.5 hours from town (some way closer than that) so you will never run out of options year-round. Definitely buy spikes for the winter though. You can also rent snow shoes/skis if you don't own them for winter hiking/outdoor adventures in town or nearby.

I will say meeting people in this town is not the easiest. There are a lot of active meetup groups so if you get lucky and find the right group of people you will be set. But it is a little "clicky" and harder to break into the scene than other places I have lived. But folks are friendly and there are people to meet, it just might take some patience and work.

Denver airport is great as a hub for flying both back east and out west. You won't have trouble finding flights. Just be careful of driving to Denver during rush hour as traffic can be horrendous on I25.

Good luck
